10 Mang Ryo
Poison Dragon: Legend Of An Asura
Author:
Senior, YeonggwangGenre:
Action, Fantasy
Although not the final antagonist of the story, Mang Ryo is as much the story’s main antagonist as the Murim Alliance leader, Lee Jong Bak. At the behest of the leader, Lee Jong Bak, Mang Ryo is responsible for eliminating the Yakmun medicine sect that, leaves Jin Jagan, the story’s protagonist, as the sole survivor of his clan. With the young Jin swearing upon revenge against the Poison sect with his life, Mang Ryo develops a sadistic obsession over Jin Jagan, a focus that will single-handedly lead him on a path of blood and revenge. Mang Ryo particularly stands out due to his crucial efforts in ensuring the necessary character development for Jin Jagan.
Even after Jin survives his sect’s massacre and gains high resistance to the deadliest of poisons, Mang Ryo, due to his obsession to be one to kill the young venom of the Yakmun sect, orchestrated several conflicts and schemes involving different subsects of the Poison sect to ensure that Jin grows to be powerful enough before the inevitable meeting of the two. Thus, through his obsession, Mang Ryo unwittingly becomes the spurring factor of history’s soon-to-be most feared poison martial master.
9 White
Tower Of God
Author:
SIUGenre:
Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Arguably the best antagonist of the Tower Of God series, White is quite interesting. Immensely powerful and intelligent, White has a complex backstory that leads him to become the villain that he is. His relationship with the story’s protagonist, Twenty-Fifth Baam, can be classified as weird, given the intensity of his obsession with Baam. Typical of a villain/antagonist, White’s presence in the story leads to a series of evolution and growth for Baam, ultimately leading to intriguing progressions to the central story.
Never hiding his intention to devour Baam, White is also focused on the protagonist’s development, a sensation similar to the character of Hisoka in the popular Hunter X Hunter anime, as he prefers to devour Baam after the protagonist has realized the full extent of his abilities and will prove to be formidable prey of some sort. Leaving aside his obsession with Baam, White has only ever been motivated by the thought of surpassing his father, Arie Hon, and this also leads back to Baam as White sees similarities between Baam and his father. This semblance also further fuels his hate for the protagonist and himself. Due to varied motivations and convincing circumstances, White is the most essential of Tower of God’s many villains.
8 God
God Game
Author:
Brandon ChenGenre:
Fantasy, Thriller
God is the main antagonist of the God Game series and the creator of the God Game. Seemingly existing out of nowhere, God conquers and dominates all of the pantheons and gods within, proclaiming himself to be the ruler of the gods: an act that no other God could dare challenge.
Exceedingly powerful and omniscient, God’s interaction with the story’s protagonist, Reiyan Asura, can only be described as cautious, even further as one of fear. Having Reiyan in the palm of his hands and at the mercies of the God Game at all times, constantly watching as if to document the process of Reiyan’s possible growth. God’s presence in the story motivates Reiyan as he is consumed by his hatred and rage for God, pushing the protagonist to evolve further in even more intriguing ways.
7 Dongsoo Seon
Bastard
Author:
Carnby Kim, Youngchan HwangGenre:
Horror, Drama
Dongsoo Seon is the main antagonist of the Bastard series and father to Jin Seon, the story’s protagonist. Despite being blood-related, Dongsoo and Jin have a somewhat twisted relationship. Dongsoo is a serial killer who uses his son Jin Seon as an accomplice to aid his murders. Only a little is known of his past other than that he had been very successful from a young age, given that he is the CEO of G corporation, a giant business corporation in Korea.
Described as obsessed with social standings and reputation, Dongsoo has a twisted sense of morality that reflects on his son, Jin Seon. Dongsoo is the source of his son’s amnesia and paranoia, which would disgust Jin with his father’s murdering tendencies, an action that becomes the central point of the story’s narrative. Despite constantly abusing his son, Dongsoo is rather affectionate of him, as shown when Jin’s life is threatened. Dongsoo is the perfect foil to his son’s character, given the father-son murdering dynamics, providing a genuinely gory reading experience.
6 X
Dice The Cube That Changes Everything
Author:
Hyunseok YunGenre:
Action, Fantasy, Drama
The mastermind behind the Dice and Quests, X is the series’s main antagonist and a near-omniscient entity. Acting as the Game Master, X decides quest content and who receives which quest and rules of the quest content. At first, it seems he only indulges Dicers and the quests out of sheer amusement, but he turns out to be extremely cunning and calculative.
However, even X is tied down to some rules as he can only give quests to Dicers who have desires to fuel the quests. X is morally ambiguous and seemingly has no grand plan other than to continue the Die battles for as long as possible, given the later revealed decision that created the events building up to the current reality of the series. His amusement towards Dongtae, the protagonist, ensures the pair undergoes several significant changes, especially Dongtae, culminating in his defeat and fulfillment of his final wish, leading to the destruction of the last dice.
5 Coach K
The Boxer
Author:
Ji-Hoon JeongGenre:
Sports
Coach K is a rather unconventional villain/ antagonist, and this is due to the type of relationship he has with the story’s protagonist, Yu. Rather than the typical aggressive clash of ideals between heroes and villains, K is essentially Yu’s father and mentor. In the series, K is a legendary boxing trainer who has trained five boxing champions, with Yu being his crowning jewel and easily his deadliest. K has a hardened personality and relies only on instinct: his gut feeling. Formerly a soldier before becoming a boxing coach, K learns that supremacy is all that matters in life regardless of value, and this is a life philosophy that he imbibes.
K soon realizes that boxing is the only place to find supremacy in its purest form, leading him to become a boxing coach. K’s qualities as the story’s antagonist shine through primarily because of how his character is portrayed in that the concept of good vs. evil does not equate to right vs. wrong, as evil can be done through proper means depicted by K’s usage of Yu’s abilities to snuff out the essence of life from his opponents. Like an amplifier, K’s influence on Yu increases the protagonist’s destructive capabilities in the ring so much that it is no longer recognizable as boxing. A notable quality of K’s character is the realism that comes with it, which makes readers find his character somewhat sympathetic and relatable, making him an outstanding antagonist.
4 Dr. Crombel
Noblesse
Author:
Jae-Ho Son, Gwang-Su LeeGenre:
Action, Adventure
Dr. Crombel is a recurring antagonist of the Noblesse series and one of the most formidable foes to have crossed both Raizel and Frankenstein’s paths in terms of both methodology and strength. A high-ranking scientist of the Union, he rose to the rank of the 13th Elder of the Union. Rather than the protagonist Raizel, Dr. Crombel’s fixation is on Frankenstein, and due to the obsession, Dr. Crombel inadvertently is involved in every incident about Raizel and his servant, Frankenstein, throughout the story, albeit mostly indirectly.
With an obsession for power, specifically Frankenstein’s power, Dr. Crombel’s motivation for his action is not at all hidden. This fixation leads him to dabble in all sorts of heinous experiments. Despite primarily using indirect means to outsmart and manipulate his enemies, Dr. Crombel is a rather powerful individual, given he is a modified human and was able to match up to Frankenstein during the latter parts of the series.
3 Lord
The Great Mage Returns After 4,000 Years
Author:
Nakasan, Redice StudioGenre:
Action, Fantasy
Lord is the story’s main antagonist and sworn enemy of Frey Blake, the protagonist. Lord is the leader of the Demigods and one of the most powerful entities in the story. Once one of the Three Great Beings, Lord was known as Archangel Micheal. He was the first fragment of God to gain consciousness after the fall of the Celestial World, after which he fell to the Mortal World. Motivated ultimately by his desire to get back at his father, God, Lord seeks to absorb all three balance cores that separate the three realms, a task which cannot be done if Lord does not absorb Frey Blake, also known as Lucas Traumen: humanity’s greatest mage.
Lord possesses multiple that ensure he is the undisputed leader of all Demigods, some of which are Space manipulation, Divine power absorption, and communication with God. However, a stand-out trait of his is his cunning, which becomes very apparent in his dealings with the ruler of Hell, Lucifer. Lord’s qualities make him the perfect obstacle to Frey’s mission to rid the world of Demigods.
2 Antares: Monarch of Destruction
Solo Leveling
Author:
Chugong, Sung-rak Jang, DisciplesGenre:
Action, Fantasy
Befitting his title as the Monarch of Destruction, Antares is the most potent of the Monarchs and the series’ final antagonist. Despite appearing only briefly, Antares impacts Sung Jinwoo, and rightly so, as their battle proved particularly difficult and devastating.
As the strongest Monarch, Antares is one of the series’ most powerful beings, barring only the Absolute Being and Sung Jinwoo. Unlike typical villains, Antares is not particularly motivated by external goals or objectives. He is just a being true to the purpose of his existence: destruction. Gleefully looking forward to giving his all in a battle against an opponent, Antares finds Sung Jinwoo the perfect opponent.
1 Park Mubong
The God Of High School
Author:
Yong-Je ParkGenre:
Action, Supernatural
Former member of the Six and organizer of the God of High School Tournament, Park Mubong leads the pack as arguably the best villain Manhwa has seen so far. A thoroughly detailed character with single-minded conviction and belief in his actions, Park Mubong went through every possible means to achieve his objective: ensuring humanity is prepared to go against the Gods in the event of another Ragnarok, regardless of the cost.
Despite an obsessive hate for gods, Mubong justifies his inhumane actions with the self-righteous objective of preparing humanity. Ability-wise, Park Mubong was always considered a genius as he is the youngest individual to become a member of The Six. Through the series’ progression, he became the Supreme God after the God Buddha: Tathagata through the series. He becomes unrivaled after fully absorbing the Buddha, reaching planetary power levels. He is only surpassed by Mori Jin, who is further revealed to be the supreme god of the universe, Matreiya. Proving to be the perfect antagonist, Park Mubong proved to be just the other side of the same coin, like Jin Mori, with both veering slightly onto different paths only to end at the same destination on opposite sides of history.
