As you’d expect, being a powerful magic user in the Marvel universe can turn any character into a serious threat to their opponents. For these iconic Marvel Comics heroes (and villains), their magic is far above the level most characters can boast about. Not only are these characters some of the most notable magic users in all of Marvel’s history, but they’re also far and away the strongest.

Baron Mordo
Strange’s Rival Is Also His Former Friend
Close
Name(s) | Karl Amadeus Mordo, Baron Mordo |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Circle Sinister, Legion Occursed, Offenders |
Magic Powers | Black magic, mystic arts, necromancy |
First Appearance | Strange Tales #111 (1963) |
Creators | Stan Lee, Steve Ditko |
Portrayed By | Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) |
Baron Mordo is mostly well-known for being a major antagonist of Doctor Strange throughout the character’s comic book history. Originally a fellow disciple of the Ancient One, Mordo’s attempted assassination on his mentor led to exile, while Strange became the Sorcerer Supreme instead. This has also led to Mordo allying with some even greater enemies, like Dormammu or Mephisto.
Power-wise, Baron Mordo is not an easy foe for Strange to defeat, though he is frequently defeated by the Sorcerer Supreme. While he’s capable of harnessing interdimensional energy, he rarely wins a fight. Even during the recent “Death of Doctor Strange” comic book storyline, Mordo is revealed to not be the Sorcerer Supreme’s killer, revealing he never even got the chance to exact his revenge.

While Jennifer Kale recently made her MCU debut in Agatha All Along, the character has been one of Marvel’s best magicians for years. Since childhood, she studied magic under Damikh the Enchanter, and later became a protector of the Man-Thing, a Nexus Being. However, she also spent many years after as the apprentice to powerful characters like Baron Mordo, Ghost Rider, and Doctor Strange.
Although she wasn’t powerful enough to be chosen by Strange as his successor to Sorcerer Supreme, she was a vital member of teams like the Midnight Sons. She was also briefly possessed by Dormammu, until she freed herself but retained control over the lord of the Dark Dimension’s zombie army via hivemind. She’s even teamed up with Doctor Strange to defeat Baron Mordo.

Fans have been waiting to see Wiccan enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the character’s magic powers were first teased in WandaVision. However, there’s a lot casual Marvel fans may not know about the son of Wanda Maximoff. A staple of the Young Avengers, Billy Kaplan and his brother Tommy (a.k.a. Speed) are protagonists of “Children’s Crusade,” rescuing their missing mother.

Part of what makes Wiccan such a popular character in the comics is his relationship with Hulkling, establishing them as one of Marvel’s most iconic LGBTQ+ couples. Power-wise, Wiccan isn’t far from his mother’s greatest powers, but his youth leaves him with a lot of growing up to do. He’s already destined to become a godlike magic user, but as of the current comics timeline, that has yet to happen.

Morgan Le Fay
A Witch Brings Who Brings Arthurian Legends To Marvel
Close
Name(s) | Morganna le Fay, Morgan le Fay |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Darkholders, Queen’s Vengeance |
Magic Powers | Necromancy, sorcery |
First Appearance | Black Knight #1 (1955) |
Creators | Stan Lee, Joe Maneely |
Portrayed By | Jessica Walter (Dr Strange TV film), Elizabeth Hurley (Runaways) |
Morgan le Fay does not originate in Marvel Comics, but in Arthurian mythology. Fortunately, she was able to join the universe alongside characters like Black Knight, but she quickly proved herself as one of the franchise’s greatest magic users. Among Morgan le Fay’s most notable acts as a villain was kidnapping the Scarlet Witch and forcing her to warp reality into a Middle Ages version of itself.
On top of that, Morgan le Fay has also been a love interest for Doctor Doom, able to manipulate him into gifting her with an army of undead warriors. She’s also the first antagonist of the Dark Avengers, forming the Cabal, a villainous counterpart to the hero’s Illuminati. While her powers in sorcery and medieval magic are not to be trifled with, she too frequently relies on others for their powers.

Clea
From The Dark Dimension Comes A Sorceress Supreme
Close
Name(s) | Clea Strange |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Defenders |
Magic Powers | Mystic arts, necromancy, sorcery |
First Appearance | Strange Tales #126 (1964) |
Creators | Stan Lee, Steve Ditko |
Portrayed By | Charlize Theron (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) |
Clea’s history in Marvel Comics is instrinsically tied to that of Doctor Strange, given that the two eventually married, and Clea even succeeded him as Sorcerer Supreme. Originating from the Dark Dimension, Clea is the daughter of Dormammu and warned Strange about defying the interdimensional being, before she was freed by the victorious Doctor Strange and taken with him to Earth-616.
Although she spent a lot of her comic book history as a damsel-in-distress for Strange, she sooner or later grew as a magic user in her own right. Studying with Doctor Strange makes her highly proficient in the mystic arts, but her Dark Dimension origins also allow her to draw upon additional energy for her spells. Plus, Clea and her husband have even fused into a stronger being known only as “Strange”.

Doctor Doom
The Fantastic Four’s Archenemy Became A Skilled Sorcerer
Close
Name(s) | Victor von Doom, Doctor Doom, God Emperor Doom, Iron Man |

Creators | Stan Lee, Jack Kirby |
Portrayed By | Julian McMahon (Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer), Toby Kebbell (Fantastic Four reboot), Robert Downey Jr. (Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars), Travis Willingham (Marvel Rivals) |
It may be surprising to the casual Marvel fans that Doctor Doom is also a sorcerer, but in fact, The Fantastic Four’s main antagonist might be one of Marvel’s greatest magic users. Doom owes a lot of his magical enhancements to both Tibetan monks and Morgan le Fay, his former lover, as his way of trying to overpower his rival, Reed Richards, and all his scientific expertise.

Among Doom’s greatest powers includes interdimensional travel, which makes him a huge menace to the Marvel universe during the Secret Wars saga. In that storyline, Doom harnesses the power of the omnipotent Beyonders to create a patchwork planet, Battleworld, for him to rule over. As far as villainous magicians in the world of Marvel, Doom is successful at using magic to achieve his wants.

Magik
Her Powers Are More Than Just A Mutation
Close
Name(s) | Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina, Magik, Darkchild |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Dark Riders, Marauders, Midnight Sons, New Mutants, Phoenix Five, Savage Avengers, Strange Academy, X-Men |
Magic Powers | Limbo magic, psionics, sorcery |
First Appearance | Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975) |
Creators | Len Wein, Dave Cockrum |
Portrayed By | Anya Taylor-Joy (The New Mutants), Courtenay Taylor (X-Men ’97), Abby Trott (Marvel Rivals) |
There aren’t lots of mutants in the Marvel universe who specialize in magic, but Illyana Rasputin is the exception. The younger sister of Colossus, Illyana was born with the mutant ability of teleportation, resulting in her becoming trapped in Limbo, essentially a midway between points in space-time. During that time, Illyana trained in sorcery and black magic under the mentorship of the demon Belasco.
After joining the X-Men, Illyana received further mentorship from Storm in the art of white magic, making her an incredibly versatile magic user in Marvel Comics. Experienced Marvel magicians like Doctor Strange have acknowledged her as having incredible potential. Her magic is also utilized so Illyana can summon the Soulsword, which becomes more powerful every time she uses it.

Doctor Strange
This Avenger Has Achieved Godly Status
Close
Name(s) | Stephen Strange, Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts, Sorcerer Supreme, Iron Mage |

Team Affiliations | Avengers, Black Priests, Defenders, Illuminati, Infinity Watch, Midnight Sons, New Avengers, Savage Avengers, Secret Defenders, Strange Academy, Thor Corps, Witches |
Magic Powers | Black magic, mystic arts, sorcery |

There are only a few beings in the Marvel universe that are better at magic than Doctor Strange. Originally a surgeon who shattered the bones in his hands in a car accident, Strange wasn’t born an incredible magician but sought the mentorship of the Ancient One to recover the use of his hands. Later, Strange becomes a powerful Master of the Mystic Arts and eventually Sorcerer Supreme.
As Marvel’s premiere magic user, Strange is almost like a Nick Fury to Marvel’s supernatural world, having the power to recognize the strength in others. He’s also in possession of the strongest magical artifacts in the multiverse, including the Book of Vishanti, the Eye of Agamotto, and the Cloak of Levitation, all of which have become staples of the character’s design.

Loki
Thor’s Brother Makes Magic Mischievous
Close
Name(s) | Loki Laufeyson, God of Mischief, Prince of Evil |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | Asgardians, Astonishing Avengers, The Cabal, Frost Giants, Lost Gods, Mighty Avengers, Young Avengers |
Magic Powers | Asgardian magic, sorcery |
First Appearance | Journey into Mystery #85 (1962) |
Creators | Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Jack Kirby |

It might seem unfair to include Loki on a list of ordinary magic users, given that the character is an Asgardian god and obviously has more latent powers than most. Nevertheless, Loki’s specialty is sorcery, rivaling that of the Asgardian sorceress Karnilla. Among Loki’s most famous spells includes illusion casting/shapeshifting, mind control, and enchantment.

There are few limits to Loki’s powers, which have allowed him to even overpower Celestials. Loki has also been able to cheat death, but that’s less a product of his powerful magic, but more a deal he made with Lady Death. Even though Loki is an immortal magic user in the Marvel universe, there’s unfortunately one character who reigns supreme in terms of total universal power…

Scarlet Witch
The Entire Marvel Timeline Crumbles Without Her
Close
Name(s) | Wanda Maximoff, Scarlet Witch, Living Darkhold, Emperor of Magic |
---|---|
Team Affiliations | A-Force, Avengers, Avengers Unity Division, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, Defenders, Force Works, Hydra’s Avengers, Lady Liberators, Secret Defenders, Strange Academy, West Coast Avengers |
Magic Powers | Chaos magic, hexcraft, necromancy, nexus being powers, witchcraft |
First Appearance | X-Men #4 (1964) |
Creators | Stan Lee, Jack Kirby |
Portrayed By | Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), Kate Higgins (Marvel Rivals) |
Wanda Maximoff has all the makings of being Marvel’s greatest magic user by a long shot. The adopted daughter of Magneto, Wanda started off as a mutant in her comic history, until she was ret-conned as an artificial mutant created by the High Evolutionary. Wanda eventually became a vessel for Chaos magic, a form of magic allowing her to influence probabilities throughout the multiverse.
Wanda further honed her abilities under the teaching of Agatha Harkness, later becoming a serious issue for the Avengers and X-Men. Notably, her mental anguish over the loss of her twin children (who were created as part of a deal with Mephisto) caused her to erase mutants from the reality of Earth-616 in the infamous “House of M” plotline, but she has since redeemed herself as a comic book hero.
