Screen adaptations of video games were once deemed certain failures, but not anymore.
For the longest time, it seemed that any movie based on a video game was doomed to fail. After all, a video game is supposed to entertain audiences with great gameplay, and not storytelling. However, that has changed in recent years. The newest generation of gaming allows developers to immerse players in a fully 3D world, experiencing compelling narratives.
Very few attempts at turning video game properties into movies and TV shows have been met well by critics, though. Movies like Assassin’s Creed and the original live action Super Mario Brothers flopped at the box office and failed to get an aggregate review score above 30%. Things are turning around for the genre, though, as there have been some truly great movies and TV shows in recent years that are based on video games.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020 caused quite a stir when the initial teaser trailer received backlash online for the ugly design of the titular main character. The studio heard the outcry, and in an unprecedented move, changed the design to look more like the video game mascot that fans know and love. This redesign was such a success that the first movie was a big enough hit to warrant a sequel. Few game mechanics from his platforming franchise were used in these movies, but young audiences were captivated by the colorful character as he navigates the real world.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees the blue hedgehog meet up with Tails, as he uses his super speed to once again stop the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carey) from taking over the world. This live action sequel also brought in another fan favorite character from the games, Knuckles, who was so popular that he received his own spin-off show. This successful franchise doesn’t seem to be slowing down, as Sonic 3 is going to add the villainous Shadow the Hedgehog to the mix.

With TV getting more attention from viewers due to the massive success of big streaming platforms, it only made sense for video game adaptations to start moving in this direction. As such, one of the biggest franchises in gaming history was developed as a live action TV series for Paramount+. After several failed attempts at making Halo into a movie, the property finally hit the small screen in 2022, with season one being proclaimed as a rousing success.
Though the Halo TV show takes a lot of its lore and aesthetic from the games, the series has forged its own identity. Master Chief still battles the evil Covenant forces as an unstoppable killing machine. But this version of the character takes off his helmet and is more personable. It is a decision that seems to have worked, and the show is going to continue on, even after the events of Season 2 introduced The Flood.

The show starts with the main character, Vlad Dracula Tepes, seeing his wife killed for practicing witchcraft, and follows him as he seeks revenge on all monster hunters. Featuring an all-star cast of voice actors, including Richard Armitage, Graham McTavish, and Jason Isaacs, this is a show that fans of the games cannot afford to miss.
