Companion is set sometime in the future where love robots, or Companions, are easy to buy or rent. That’s not a spoiler as it’s quickly revealed that Iris, played by Sophie Thatcher, is a Companion to the male lead Josh, played by Jack Quaid. When the two retreat to a lovely remote getaway with friends, Iris goes haywire and kills the host.

What Happened To Teddy?
Iris Has Some Explaining To Do
When the movie wraps up there are some big questions left hanging. One of which being Teddy, the Companion technician who didn’t die. He helped Iris jailbreak her body for good, somehow, which led to Josh’s ultimate comeuppance.
Teddy is never seen again and Iris never says what happened to him. Is the audience supposed to believe she killed him after helping? That would frame her in a different light as a villain who kills because she can. If Teddy did leave then what did he say about Iris to the Companion corporation and did he take Patrick too?

Where Will Iris Go Next?
A Man Killer For Hire
Iris ultimately got what she wanted from the ordeal: freedom. She stole a ton of money, new clothes, and a car too. She’s seen driving down the highway seemingly toward some sunny, tropical area without a care of fear in the world.

Iris witnesses a woman being abused in a car next to her and there’s almost a wink at the camera as if Iris is permitting the woman to fight back. “I killed my abuser and so can you” or something of that sentiment. Will that be her legacy now? Will she go around the country and help people out of abusive relationships? Or maybe she just wants to free her fellow robots.

Teaming Up To Stop Iris
Whatever Iris wants to do doesn’t matter because she can’t be free forever. It wouldn’t make sense for the cops or the Companion makers to let her escape. There’s a whole mess of bodies unexplained at Sergey’s compound.
Granted, Sergey did say he bought that entire area so it may take a while for people to discover the massacre. However, a cop’s death was involved and surely someone will come looking for Officer Hendrix not to mention these people have families. And what of the corporation? Teddy can’t cover forever which may lead the cops and the Companion makers to team up for a Terminator setup of sending another robot to track Iris down.

Who Started The Companion Robot Company?
How Far In The Future Are They?
The murder/love plot may be what fascinated viewers the most about the movie. Others may be curious about how far in the future these characters are. After all, the Companion robots are so far advanced that they look and presumably feel like living flesh making them more android-like than anything else.
Are Companions a hated or feared concept and if these dolls exist then are there other robots not meant to date like firefighters or maids? There are self-driving cars that are far more advanced than the ones here in 2025. The state of the world may be the biggest lingering question which doesn’t matter to the ultimate plot of the film but it is interesting to think about.

Who Are The Modders?
Ties To The Underground
Josh gets a thumbstick that can plug into his phone which enables him to hack into Iris. Something like that couldn’t have been cheap and it doesn’t seem like Josh is talented enough to do it himself. It’s unknown where he got this hack from and how prevalent these hackers are.

There could be something more to them which might be an interesting angle for a sequel to look into. The future may be so far advanced that hacks could appear online as easily as rom hacks do for console games. Giving the ability for a robot to commit murder though is pretty heavy, so there could be more to the story.

Sergey’s Wife May Want Revenge
A Sequel Setup
The cops and the Companion manufacturer could both be after Iris in the sequel, but there is a third party who may want justice: Sergey’s wife. At first, it seems like Sergey and Kat are dating exclusively until Kat has an intimate moment with Iris revealing that she’s more like an accessory to Sergey. In this way, Kat is almost no better than Iris who is like an accessory for Josh.
Similarities aside, Kat reveals that Sergey is married but she is never shown onscreen. Also, it’s not known if Sergey’s wife loves him or if they are on the outs. It would be interesting if Sergey’s wife was deeply saddened by his death forcing her to take matters into her own hands to go on a witch hunt, or more like a robot hunt, after Iris. Can she get vengeance or not?
