7 Lady Nagant – My Hero Academia
Lady Nagant is a former pro-hero who worked under the Hero Public Safety Commission. While working there, her superiors made her kill villains and heroes, corrupt or not, as long as they were deemed a threat to disrupting the order of the hero society. This eventually made her disillusioned, as she killed her enemies without hesitation.
However, she eventually realized the Hero Public Safety Commission was hypocritically justifying its actions for the good of everyone. After realizing the hypocrisy of her actions, Lady Nagant decided to witness the downfall of hero society, preferring the Symbol of Evil’s rule to the corrupt, hypocritical system she served under.
6 Pain – Naruto
Growing up in the war-torn Amegakure village gave Nagato Pain a first-hand experience of the horrors of war. Due to his upbringing, Pain dreamed of peace and wanted to spread it to the world. Unfortunately, the world would not be so kind, as various ninja villages and factions frequently clashed against each other.
Pain realized that to value peace, one must first experience pain. To achieve his goal, he captured the tailed beasts and planned to distribute them among countries to be used as nukes, which would eventually cause largescale destruction and the fear emerging from it would ultimately give rise to peace.
5 Keyaru – Redo of Healer
The Redo of Healer anime series portrays the life of Keyaru (also known as Keyaruga). On his 14th birthday, Keyaru was chosen as the hero of healing. However, his joy at being chosen as a hero was not long-lasting, as he was promptly enslaved at the hands of his ‘allies’. While being made dependent on drugs, Keyaru was put through hellish torture.
Fortunately, as the hero of healing, Keyaru found a way to heal his body and his dependency on drugs. After overcoming that, he promptly escaped his prison and set out to have his revenge on all who wronged him. Unfortunately, as Keyaryu strived to eradicate his wrongdoers, he also lost his way into depravity.
4 Ken Kaneki – Tokyo Ghoul
Thanks to its timid but eventually badass protagonist, Ken Kaneki, the Tokyo Ghoul anime series has become a staple in the seinen genre. After a ghoul-related accident, Kaneki received a transplant of ghoul organs that turned him into a half-ghoul with a hunger for human flesh. After becoming a ghoul, Kaneki was faced with the grim truth that some ghouls toyed with human lives.
While trying to retain his human side, Kaneki battled against his ghoul urges until he met Jason, who tortured him. After enduring grueling torture for multiple days, Kaneki gave in completely to his inner ghoul. From there, he left his allies and joined an evil ghoul organization to further his own goals while taking them down.
3 Yagami Light – Death Note
In the Death Note anime series, Yagami Light comes into contact with the Death Note, a supernatural notebook in which anyone’s name written in it will die. After the discovery of the Death Note’s powers, Light decided to become the ‘god of the new world’ and became the judge, jury, and executioner of countless prisoners and convicts.
Unfortunately, as Light used the Death Note to reduce Japan’s crime rate, he lost himself and began abusing his power. If anyone stood in his way, evil or not, Light executed them without a shred of remorse. Light tried to establish his dominance and authority by killing the renowned detective L when he confronted him.
2 Eren Yeager – Attack On Titan
Eren Yeager was brought up on Paradis Island, an island where the Eldians were quarantined due to the sin of their ancestors for using the power of the Titans to spread havoc and destruction. In Eren’s early days, he fought against Titans, thinking them to be his real enemies. However, after a while, he came to a stunning truth: everyone outside Paradis Island on the other side of the world was his enemy.
Eren was not deterred by the shocking revelation; instead, he strengthened his resolve to eliminate all his enemies, meaning everyone outside the Island. Consequently, he eradicated 80% of the world’s population to liberate his people from their restraints.
1 Lelouch – Code Geass
Lelouch Vi Britannia, the 11th son of Emperor Charles Britannia, rebelled against his father after the invasion of Japan by the Holy Britannia Empire. Fortunately for Lelouch, he met C.C. shortly after and gained the power to fully enact his rebellion. With the power of Geass, Lelouch set off to stop his father’s tyrannical rule.
In Lelouch’s quest for revenge, he descended into darkness and adopted a sense of self-righteousness and arrogance, which led him to believe that his actions were justified, even if they involved harming innocent people. As his experiences fueled his desire to destroy Britannia, Lelouch became increasingly ruthless and manipulative in his methods.
