7 Drastic Character Changes In Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2

Fans hoping to see more characters from the Castlevania universe implemented in season two of Castlevania: Nocturne may be disappointed. There aren’t many new characters to speak of as it instead doubles down on characters from last season. The overall plot involves Richter and the rest of his crew powering up in various ways to hopefully go after Erzsebet and destroy her hold on the sun.

Tossed in are a lot of emotional peaks for characters in season two of Castlevania: Nocturne leading to some drastic choices and character changes for the latest Netflix anime. Do these changes last for long? Let’s get into all of that and more with spoilers at the ready.

Richter/Annette

Love Blossoms Amidst Depression

Annette and Richter in Castlevania Nocturne Season 2

The changes in Richter and Annette are kind of intertwined and it’s hard to discuss one without the other. Both were valuable warriors who had faults in the first season but they rectified them by the end. The two shared a good friendship and then it seems, out of nowhere, the two started to fall in love in season two. It’s a real “will they, won’t they” sitcom situation but it becomes very clear it’s going to happen by episode five. Fans who wanted to see Maria and Richter get together, even though they adopted siblings, will be disappointed when they see Richter and Annette sail off into the sunset at the end of season two.

Edouard

The Singer Uncovers His Eyes

Edouard in Castlevania Nocturne Season 2

Edouard was set up to be a resistance member in season one, but he was captured and killed early. This haunts Annette throughout the season especially when she finds out his future is more grim after becoming a literal monster. Unlike other creatures forged through sorcery, Edouard can retain his memories and humanity despite being confused.

His hands cover his eyes in season one as a reflection of him trying to hide from the world literally and figuratively. In season two, Edouard becomes more comfortable in his monster skin and embraces it as he uncovers his eyes. He even fights back and rejoins society with Richter and Annette on their ship at the end of this season.

Tera

A Looming Vampire Threat

Tera in Castlevania Nocturne Season 2

Tera is a constant voice of reason and hope in season one. She’s the glue that binds the fighters together who make the ultimate sacrifice in the season one finale. She takes her daughter Maria’s place in sacrifice to Erzsebet, becoming a vampire in the process. Season two doesn’t spend that much time with Tera as a vampire when there was so much potential there. She’s not quite evil either as she tries to comfort Maria and unwittingly imbues her with a tinge of darkness. Instead of a youthful, exuberant mother, Tera is sullen and lost, unsure of how to cope with her new female vampire body.

Maria

A Step Toward The Dark

Maria in Castlevania Nocturne Season 2

Episode four is one of the better ones of season two because it shows a drastic character change in Maria. While she may have come across as bitter and stubborn in season one, her lust for revenge knows no bounds in season two. This leads to Maria killing her father, The Abbot, by summoning a dragon to burn him alive. The look in Maria’s eyes is telling and even though she returns her summoning abilities to the light, there’s clearly still darkness deep inside. Sadness and jealousy too as she’s not sure how to feel about her mom or Annette seemingly taking her adopted brother Richter away.

Juste

The Magic Flows Once More

Juste in Castlevania Nocturne Season 2

Thankfully, not all character changes in season two are grim as Juste’s character progression is one of the better ones. Like Trevor Belmont in the first season of the original Castlevania anime, Juste was reserved in season one of Castlevania: Nocturne. With the loss of friends and family, he became a hermit and no longer fought evil for the good of others. Even by the end of season one, Juste is still a hermit but he finally gets out of his funk and joins Richter in the fight against Erzsebet in season two. He doesn’t die either which is surprising given the amount of fighting he does at his age.

Drolta

A Servant No Longer

Drolta as a human in Castlevania Nocturne Season 2

Drolta has several key changes in season two. First, she dies at the very last second of season one but changes from a vampire to a demon via The Abott’s alchemy in episode one of season two. She’s stronger than ever before with a new form that can even grace the sunlight.

It’s a literal character change but she has a heartfelt change too as she betrays her mistress, Erzsebet, when she deems her unworthy of carrying on the goddess Sekhmet’s legacy. It kind of sets up Drolta to be the big boss of season three but Richter squashes that potential with a clean dissection. Hopefully, now, Drolta is dead for good.

Olrox

The Dragon Bides His Time

Olrox in Castlevania Nocturne Season 2

Olrox is a villain but not one without a heart. He kills Richter’s mom in season one but lets Richter live for unknown reasons. He comes to France to join Erzsebet’s legions even though he doesn’t do much to help her despite his cockiness of being in her order. Like Tera, Olrox is kind of lost in season two, unsure of what he should do next. It’s all because he loves a human, Mizrak, who doesn’t love him back because of Olrox’s allegiance to Erzsebet. By the end, Olrox decides to do something good by helping Richter defeat Drolta and also decides to resurrect Mizrack, who gets mortally wounded in the final battle, to make him a vampire as well. Ultimately, Olrox lets love in to win.
