Vampires have been the soul of the dark fantasy genre for the longest time. They essentially mirror a human’s innate obsession with achieving perfection and are interpreted in diverse ways across the entertainment industry with one thing in common—inhuman strength.

Vampires make for great adventures across all storytelling mediums, including manhwa, but not all vampire stories need to be about horror and blood…

With that said, the manhwa industry has yet to fully explore the complexities of vampire lore outside the typical romantic framework. There aren’t a lot of vampire-centered series that focus more on showing the full potential of a vampire’s power—think Hellsing. This ultimately gives readers books with washed-down, underwhelming vampire characters that barely have any story outside of being love interests. However, the few leading manhwa that do delve into this particular myth in detail introduce some pretty strong characters into the mix.

Vampire of the East, also known as The Scholar Who Walks The Night, is one of the most famous romance manhwa turned K-dramas of 2012 (the K-drama came out in 2015). Although the primary genre of the manhwa is romance, it does a great job of incorporating a very “realistic” action element to its storyline that complements the overall somber tone of it.

In the manhwa, the character that exudes strength and impact is surprisingly not the protagonist but is the villain known as Gwi. He’s a lone vampire whose only aim in his immortal life is to become the strongest and most feared creature in the realm. And for that, he’s willing to do anything and everything possible, even if it means pushing the boundaries of what is possible and impossible. Vampire of the East doesn’t showcase its vampires as characters that have brute strength. Instead, it focuses more on the intricacies of their personalities. For Gwi, unlike the main character, it comes from his pride in being a vampire. It’s this entitlement to power that lets him easily kill and consume his master, and pushes him to go for more. He’s wicked, strong, and has little to no moral values.

Trapped is another romance that does its other tropes surprisingly well. This particular manhwa features mystery and thriller more than action and does a great job of portraying a vampire’s power and skills from a more psychological vantage point. It focuses heavily on the concept of dark allure and the innate calculating nature of vampires, rather than their brute strength and supernatural prowess.

The main lead of the manhwa, Park Yeon-soo, is a cunning, ruthless, and manipulative creature who is willing to go to any lengths to get what he wants. He has no qualms about killing anyone—humans and vampires alike— and is highly opportunistic when he has to be. Rather than using his physical prowess to win fights, Yeon-soo focuses more on his wits. He’s absolutely unprincipled when it comes to confrontations, having no qualms about playing the bad guy.

City of the Hungry is a manhwa that has one of the most unique premises in recent times; it’s essentially a blend of The Walking Dead and Twilight. Set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world, the manhwa starts in a typical desolate land set after a zombie apocalypse. The uniqueness of the premise stems from the surprise reveal of an ancient vampire waking up from centuries of sleep.

5 Horror Movies That Twist The Vampire Mythos

These classic horror movies twisted the existing lore regarding Vampires in several interesting ways.

Jerome Ge Vladstroker is an immortal who happens to be unlucky enough to gain consciousness from his vampire slumber in a zombie apocalypse—an unfortunate circumstance where blood is scarce and hordes of mindless undead roam with nothing but decaying flesh on them. As the only currently revealed vampire of this time, Jerome has no competition in terms of being the strongest vampire. He has superhuman speed, teleportation abilities, invisibility, unnatural regenerative powers, and strength that can take on hordes of zombies with his bare hands. The only thing that sets him back is his intense dependence on fresh human blood, which he can’t get for obvious reasons.

The lack of action-based vampire manhwa is pretty evident from how there’s barely any vampire character that meets the conventional definition of “strong.” Fortunately, Unholy Blood is one of the rare ones that not only heavily features powerful vampires, but also does it through the lens of an overpowered female MC. With that said, since this particular manhwa is so heavily based on immortality, numerous characters in it deserve a spot. However, none of them are as wicked and well-written as its main antagonist, Yohan.

Considering how almost every vampire mentioned thus far has had a pretty common theme of being ruthless and cunning, Yohan, by default, has them also. Furthermore, the man is completely unhinged with his abilities and prowess. He’s a half-pureblood vampire with powers that exceed that of a normal vampire, and definitely of a normal human. He can use telekinesis—which he employs to kill his most trusted allies (each of them very strong in their own right)—has superhuman hearing, and can hypnotize a mass audience on command. He also has a strange power that allows him to disable and control other vampires’ powers in his vicinity. Even in his final fight with the MC, he maintains an advantage over her throughout their confrontation, until he voluntarily yields.

While the antagonist of Unholy Blood is strong and has a lot of abilities that grant him the status of “God” in the manhwa, it’s ultimately the series’ main character that takes the cake as the strongest character.

Hayan Park, a pureblood vampire, is one of the most formidable vampire characters—way stronger than average vampires. She has unprecedented strength and speed and can stop a full-grown vampire’s punch with only her finger. The strongest of Yohan’s underlings, known as angels, have nothing on her and are easily overpowered by her in confrontations. Like Yohan, she can also use telekinesis and hypnosis but is also able to use a handful of other supernatural abilities, like telepathy, shapeshifting, and pyrokinesis.

Noblesse, despite not explicitly having the term “vampire” in it, is the flagship manhwa series for the vampire archetype. It features a species known as “nobles” that essentially shares every attribute associated with the textbook definition of vampires, apart from their innate desire to assist and safeguard humans voluntarily (conventional vampires find humans inferior) and their ability to wield signature weapons.

One of the nobles featured in Noblesse is a pale-skinned woman known as Erga Kenesis Di Raskreia. She’s the current Lord of the nobles and has the highest position in the noblesse hierarchy, marking her as one of the strongest nobles to exist right after The Noblesse. In addition to the traditional abilities associated with vampires—like maximum agility and enhanced physical strength—she also has elevated stamina, shown by how she ruthlessly cuts the arm of an enemy and consequently severs the ground nearby. Her soul weapon, a sword known as Ragnarok, can be used not only for offense but also to create strong barriers for defense. She also uses it to manipulate her blood to create massive blood fields that annihilate anything they touch.

The protagonist of Noblesse isn’t an average “weak guy who goes through a massive transformation and becomes unbeatable” character. He doesn’t need that sort of physical development because the manhwa already starts off as him being the most powerful character in his universe.

Not all vampires are blood thirsty creatures that fans often know them by, some, like these examples, don’t drink blood

Raizel’s entire persona is essentially centered on being cold and apathetic and having a power that’s unrivaled by anyone and everyone around him. A few of his most “meek” abilities include telekinesis and telepathy, yet even these surpass the capabilities of those around him. He’s shown to use his mind control multiple times throughout the series. He has immense blood manipulation and control and can use anyone’s blood to do anything he wants.

He can heal or “awaken” allies who are on the brink of death (although it drains him a lot) and can seal the powers and abilities of his enemies. Unlike other nobles and their soul weapons, Raizel’s weapon is blood itself, which he can use to create a blood field that is way stronger than that of Erga’s. He can also give himself blood wings and summon blood phoenixes with his power.
