Fans of Masamune-kun’s Revenge should find plenty to enjoy with these other romance anime.
There are lots of ways to interpret love. “Love is a many splendored thing,” “love makes the world go round,” “love makes life beautiful.” Then again “love hurts,” “love stinks,” and “love is a battlefield.” Masamune-kun’s Revenge takes the latter phrases literally as the titular Masamune seeks to charm Aki just to break her heart to avenge being spurned by her years ago.

The anime’s second season, Masamune-kun’s Revenge R, is due to come out in July 2023 and will cover the manga from Chapter 30 onwards. But it’s not the only show that takes a more aggressive, combative take on romance. Until the new season reaches Crunchyroll, fans can check out these romantic anime shows in the meantime.
8 Special A
Also known as S.A., the title is a reference to the high-end classes offered by Hakusen Academy, the best school in the prefecture. It’s here that people can find the show’s leads Hikari and Kei. Ever since Kei beat her in a wrestling match when she was six, Hikari’s been obsessed with besting Kei at everything: sports, competitions, school grades, and more.
She’s been going to the same schools as Kei ever since, reaching S.A. status, but always coming second to Kei. Nonetheless, she won’t back down, unaware that Kei’s feelings toward her are more romantic than antagonistic. Even then, they aren’t the only rivals, as the S.A. offers different students seeking #1 status, and situations that complicate things between Kei and Hikari. To see how it turns out, viewers have to catch it on Amazon Prime.
7 Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends
Based on Yomi Hirasaka’s original light novel, the anime shows what happens when the social outcasts at St. Chronica’s Academy get together. It’s like an anime version of The Breakfast Club in that regard. The whole thing started when Kodaka, a student with an intimidating glare and blonde-brown hair, meets a harsh girl called Yozora who talks to her imaginary friend Tomo.
To improve their situation, Kodaka convinces Yozora to set up the “Neighbors’ Club” for other loners. They end up attracting the stuck-up idol Sena, pretty boy Yukimura, pervy scientist Rika, the foul-mouthed nun Maria, and Kodaka’s vampire-loving little sister Kobato. Things only get more complicated from there as hijinks ensue and old secrets get revealed. Crunchyroll and Funimation have the first series, but the sequel Haganai NEXT can only be bought online.
6 Amagi Brilliant Park
Created by Full Metal Panic writer Shoji Gatoh and Yuka Nakajima, the Amagi Brilliant Park light novel got turned into an anime by Kyoto Animation in 2014. It used to be available on Crunchyroll until it and other series licensed by Sentai Filmworks were dropped from the service in 2022. It is available digitally via Amazon.
It’s a shame as the premise is quite interesting, as stuck-up perfectionist Seiya is forced by the stern Isuzu to take her “on a date” to Amagi Brilliant Park. It’s a theme park run by the magical residents of Maple Land and is on the verge of being shut down. Only Seiya can save them now with his entertainment experience. Provided he can learn to lighten up again.
5 Toradora!
In Asian folklore, the tiger and dragon are polar opposites and rivals to each other, which Yuyuko Takemiya and Yasu’s own light novel-turned-anime used to create one of the archetypal antagonistic romance tales. It’s also easy to find online, being available on Netflix, Funimation, Tubi, and Amazon Prime.
Ryuji is a gentle but fierce-looking boy whose life is turned upside down when he meets Taiga, the best friend of his crush Minori. She’s aggressive, easily annoyed, and hates Ryuji on sight. Yet she also has a thing for Ryuji’s friend Yusaku. The two end up making a mutual deal to try and get the other with their crush, only for their plans to backfire and make them look like a couple instead. Will they ever succeed, or will they find something to like about each other?
4 Nisekoi
The other top anti-romance romcom comes in Naoshi Komi’s Nisekoi, or “False Love.” It starts off with Raku Ichijo, the son of a yakuza boss, and Chitoge Kirisaki, the daughter of a rival crime gang called Beehive, already getting off on the wrong foot. She accidentally struck him in the face and made him lose his locket, and he forced her to help him look for it.
To make things worse, his father and the Beehive leader have agreed to make peace by partnering their kids together. Raku and Chitoge have to pretend to be a loving couple for three years or risk putting the gangs at war again. But perhaps contempt can breed familiarity over time. Both seasons can be found on Funimation, with the first also being available on Hulu.
3 My Girlfriend & Childhood Friend Fight Too Much
Better known by its Japanese shorthand Oreshura, the series began life as a light novel by Yūji Yūji and Ruroo, running in the pages of GA Bunko for 11 years. Over that time, it gained four manga adaptations, two drama CDs, two radio shows, and a single anime season in 2013 that can still be streamed on Hulu and Funimation. Its premise is basically Nisekoi without the crime gangs.
Eita Kidō, a high schooler essentially abandoned by his parents after their divorce, shuns anything to do with love and focuses on his studies to get into medical school. But then the school’s top beauty Masuzu, tired of being confessed to, forces Eita into a fake romance. Once Eita’s childhood friend Chiwa hears about them being a “couple,” things only get more complicated.
2 My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU
When it comes to light novels beginning with “Ore,” Wataru Watari and Ponkan8’s series is the more popular option. Known as Oregairu to fans, it ran in Gagaga Bunko from 2011 to 2021, got four drama CDs, three manga runs, and a three-season anime that’s been wrecked by streaming rights. Crunchyroll dropped the first two seasons in 2022, keeping only the third season.
HIDIVE stepped in, but now only has the first season available for viewers. The second season can only be bought digitally via Microsoft or Google Play or bought in physical boxsets. To think the story of the cynical pessimist Hachiman, ice queen Yukino, and cheery Yui setting up an after-school club to help their fellow students would be so complicated to watch in full.
1 Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War
At least Aka Akasaka’s manga-turned-anime is easier to catch, available in full on Crunchyroll and Funimation. It’s not exactly akin to Masamune-kun’s Revenge or the other angry romcoms as its leads are in actual love with each other, which might make it more palatable to those who aren’t keen on spite. Instead, their only issue is their pride.
Kaguya is the heiress of a wealthy conglomerate, and Miyuki is the smartest student in the prefecture. It’s made them both too proud to confess their love to each other, which they see as a sign of weakness. Instead, they try to plot events to make the other show affection, if not confess in full, to break their steely façade. Who’ll crack first?
