The Diamond Dogs – Season 1, Episode 8

Roy Kent Finally Opens Up And Ted Is A Dab Hand With Darts

Close

This season one episode sees notorious hard-man Roy Kent open up about his feelings for Keeley and Ted wipes the smirk from Rupert’s face. This episode encapsulates the phrase, be curious, not judgmental.

The episode features all the elements of the best Ted Lasso episodes, with standout hilarious moments and lots of heart as Roy expresses to Keeley his feelings, something which scares him until he finally has a meeting with The Diamond Dogs. However, the best moment of the episode comes from Ted and Rebecca’s trip to the pub, where her ex-husband Rupert bets that if he beats Ted at darts he can pick the team for the last two games, whereas if he loses he can’t enter the owners’ box. With both men not revealing their darting prowess until the bet is made, Ted’s line of “I forgot I’m left-handed” is superbly delivered by Jason Sudeikis and the pantomime bad guy is defeated for the time being. Ending with the bombshell of Keeley finding out about Rebecca’s intentions to incriminate Ted, the episode is packed with laughs, drama, and great character beats, making this one of the best Ted Lasso episodes.

8

In Rainbow, we get a glimpse into Nate becoming more assertive and the actions that lead him to stray from the team by the end of season two. We also have great character moments for club captain Isaac, and, of course, the return of Roy Kent to AFC Richmond.

Within this episode, Nate gets coaching from both Keeley and Rebecca to become more assertive, a change that leads to his eventual downfall, when requesting the window table at his parents’ favorite restaurant. Roy and Ted take Isaac for a local kick-about to rediscover his love for football, something that opens Roy’s eyes and leads him to quit his job at Sky Sports whilst on the air and parodying many rom-com moments as Roy rushes to the stadium in time for kick-off. Ultimately, the episode ends with “you had me at coach” as the four key members of the Richmond staff finally assembled on the touchline. Definitely up there as one of the best Ted Lasso episodes.

The episode focuses on Rebecca reclaiming her own personality following years of being with her ex-husband, Rupert, with the help of Keeley and Sassy. Hannah Waddingham is excellent throughout and gets to show off her incredible singing voice with her performance of “Let It Go” near the episode’s climax. Nate roasts the players at half-time, resulting in Roy Kent rediscovering the anger that made him a great player and Richmond going on to get the result. This episode also has the first depiction of Ted’s panic attacks, which went on to become central to the plot of season two.

6

Sunflowers – Season 3, Episode 6

The Trip To Amsterdam That Changes The Fortunes Of AFC Richmond

Ted Lasso Roy and Jamie's Bike Ride In Sunflowers

Ted Lasso

A fine outing in season three, Sunflowers, sees the Richmond team journey to Amsterdam to take on Ajax and leads to some great moments between Roy and Jamie, as well as Ted’s discovery of Johan Cryuff’s Total Football.

Jamie and Roy decide to go for a run around Amsterdam as part of Jamie’s one-on-one, whilst the rest of the players decide what to do with their evening. Rebecca falls into the canal and spends the evening with a mystery man on a houseboat. All the while, Ted is reminded of home, visits a BBQ restaurant and, whilst watching old recordings of the Chicago Bulls, puts together a new philosophy for Richmond, later confirmed to be Total Football, when he brings it up to coach Beard. A great episode full of hilarious moments cementing its place on this list.

A Huge Moment Of Joy And The Evolution Of Nate’s Character Is Realized

Inverting the Pyramid of Success is the finale to Ted Lasso’s second season and brings a mix of huge highs and lows. This is the episode where fans got to see Nate finally turn into the villain that had been teased throughout the second season due to his perceived neglect from Ted.

The episode is packed full of great moments both on and off the pitch, from Edwin Okufu’s meltdown as Sam turns down the move to his all-star team to stay at Richmond, to the devastating speech from Nate to Ted at half-time. This episode has some of the most important character moments and has a superb tease for season three with Nate coaching West Ham United. This is a top-tier episode and worthy of a spot on this list.

Jamie Gets A Note From Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso does season finales like nobody else and season one also had an absolute stunner. The episode hits all the right emotional marks and shows why the show became beloved by so many fans.

The episode covers the last game of the Premier League season, with Richmond needing to get a point to survive relegation. However, they face Jamie Tartt’s Manchester City. The episode sees a lot of character development for Jamie, having received praise from Ted in a press conference, and with the game at 1-1, Jamie makes the extra pass, something Ted always asked him to do and relegates Richmond. It comes as a gut-punch to fans expecting Richmond to stay in the Premier League, and Ted’s note to Jamie along with a toy army soldier encapsulates the positive feel the show has in the face of adversity. The best episode season one has to offer and one of the best in the show.

Ted spends most of the episode trying to avoid his mother, whilst she charms everyone at AFC Richmond, before finally confronting his mother for not seeking help for their mental health after Ted’s father took his own life. It’s a powerful scene juxtaposed with Jamie returning to his home following a stint with depression and being comforted by his mom. This episode also sees Beard talk to Nate to give him a second chance and reveals more about his backstory. An emotional episode that builds on all the excellent character work done to that point in the series.

So Long, Farewell – Season 3, Episode 12

The Finale To The Characters Fans Had Come To Love

Close

So Long, Farewell is the second-best Ted Lasso episode for a multitude of reasons, from its bombshell opening reveal that Ted is leaving Richmond to the payoff of seeing Rebecca’s ex-husband Rupert finally face the music for all of his awful deeds.

The episode perfectly pays off with all of its characters, with Ted choosing to return to his son in Kansas, Roy becoming Richmond’s manager with Nate and Beard by his side, and Rebecca giving 49% of AFC Richmond to the fans, including Mae, the pub owner, and its most loyal patrons. The season is wrapped up with Ted reminding his son to “be a goldfish” after missing a chance in a youth soccer match.

1

Man City – Season 2, Episode

Full Of Big Moments And Has A Gut Punch Of An Ending

Roy hugs Jamie after the altercation with is Dad

Ted Lasso

Man City has some of the most powerful emotional beats in the entirety of Ted Lasso and that makes it number one on this list. From its opening with Dr. Sharon being hit by a car and Ted’s reveal just before the credits roll, this episode knows how to tug at the audience’s heartstrings.

With the Richmond team set to play Manchester City in the FA Cup Semi-Final, Ted reveals to his team that he suffered a panic attack at the end of their last match, with the full team supporting him. Richmond, despite their best efforts, was defeated 5-0, leading Jamie Tartt’s dad to enter the locker room boasting that his favorite team had battered Richmond. Jamie finally snaps and punches his father, leading Jamie to stand in silence before being hugged by Roy and breaking into tears. The episode ends as Ted leaving the stadium, visibly shaken, and calling Dr. Sharon opening up about his father taking his own life. This episode hits hard and is the best episode of Ted Lasso for that reason.
