One of the most beloved anime of all time for international audiences, Cowboy Bebop, is turning 25 this year. To celebrate the anniversary of Spike Spiegel and his gang, there have been a few events and collaborations happening in Japan. One of the most exciting things was just announced this week – a special screening of the movie, attended by cast members and the director.

Cowboy Bebop originally aired in 1998 and 1999 with a 26-episode anime series that took the Western anime world by storm. Following its success, a movie was produced in 2001 called simply Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. It is this film that will be shown in this special anniversary screening, which is occurring next month. It is set between episodes 22 and 23 of the original series, filling in an extra story to give fans a little something special to enjoy.

This special screening of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie will be held at Shinjuku Picadilly, a movie theater in the heart of Tokyo. It will be attended by director Shinichiro Watanabe (Space Dandy, Carole & Tuesday), along with voice actors Kōichi Yamadera (Spike), Megumi Hayashibara (Faye Valentine), and Aoi Tada (Ed). It is the first time in a decade that the cast has gotten together for a Cowboy Bebop event, making it a significant occasion indeed.

Also joining them will be the scriptwriter Dai Sato, who will moderate the event as there will also be a question and answer session. The questions can be submitted in advance on the Sunrise World website. While they should be submitted in Japanese, international fans can always use translation software to submit and hope their questions may be chosen, too! There is also a poll happening on the same webpage for fans to vote for their favorite episodes, which will later be available to watch on the Sunrise World YouTube channel.

This special screening of Cowboy Bebop: The Movie is only the first in a series of planned events for the anime’s anniversary. In addition to a new character visual drawn by the original character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto, new merchandise has also been announced. Cowboy Bebop merchandise is incredibly rare in Japan, even in the secondhand market, making this a big announcement. Even new figures of the characters are set to release later in the year.

After the poor reception of Netflix’s live action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, it is good news for fans to see that the series continues to live in despite this. Add onto this the hype for Watanabe’s new sci-fi anime that was just announced last month, and it’s likely that this special movie screening will be very popular. The tickets are available via lottery only until September 4th (with general sales for any remaining seats from September 8th), and will sell for ¥3,500 ($24 USD).
