The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 is now airing in Japan and streaming services around the world, including Crunchyroll (for many countries around the world). The opening sequence for this new season, released a few hours before the premiere of the first episode, features “Hyakka Ryoran” by Lilas Ikuta. In only three days, it had been viewed over a million times on YouTube. Well, given Ikuta is also part of YOASOBI, it would be no surprise if this song turned to be a huge hit.
Season 2 will feature many key events with important revelations. Some of them have major implications for the way the “bigger plot” unfolds. There is a scene that is quite revealing and highly anticipated, and despite being important for this “main plot”, it’s not exactly for this reason that fans can’t wait to watch it. This specific scene is teased more than once in the new opening sequence, and it’s likely to happen around the end of the first cour. We’re talking about that scene, the frog scene.

There’s Something About Jinshi
This section of the article contains major spoilers for The Apothecary Diaries Season 2. If you don’t want to be spoiled on it, refrain yourself from reading this part.
Most fans enjoyed the way Jinshi and Maomao started getting closer in Season 1. The hairpin scene, while not exactly the start of their bound, can be taken as an important landmark of their relationship.
The Apothecary Diaries is not exactly a love story, but it doesn’t mean it cannot include love stories, and we all like to see love flourishing between these two, as they have good chemistry. But Jinshi, as a eunuch, would have some limits in the way he could explore this love if it ever truly blossoms. And there comes the frog scene.
This scene happens after Maomao and Jinshi jump into a nearby waterfall, following a sudden attack. There is a cave behind this waterfall, but as Maomao and Jinshi are trying to reach it, a frog jumps on her head, and they end up losing balance. Her hand conveniently lands between his legs, and she ends up touching something. Something that makes her aware Jinshi is actually not a eunuch. Jinshi, on the other hand, claims she actually touched a frog.
Well, it happens in a cave. Right at the start of the opening sequence, we see Maomao’s hand in many places, including a cave-like hole. Then we see a frog in the middle of the sequence, in that part in which there are many hands holding different things. But it’s at the end of it that the OP strongly teases the scene: Maomao and Jinshi are wet and there’s a brief segment showing only water, right before we get to see Xiaolang trying to write something on the soil.
Things start getting more interesting in the third volume, which is being adapted in this court, and as the opening teases most key events, fans feel excited about the episodes. Anyway, with all of that, it’s basically impossible to say they are not feeding the hype for the scene.

It’s not only the frog scene that is teased in the sequence. Basically, all major events that will take place during this cour are hinted in the video. But it’s all put in a way that those unaware of what will happen don’t understand what’s being teased.
Actually, Apothecary Diaries is quite good at hinting at events without actually spoiling them to newcomers. The OP directors just seem to know how to find that point in which they can appease longtime fans without angering the new fans.
For example, the first opening had lyrics from Jinshi’s perspective, and also previewed many poisonous plants, as the first cour of the first season focuses more on introducing everyone. The second part’s opening also previewed a few segments of the show, but as volume 1 and 2 are generally more introductory, and seemingly unrelated to any bigger plot, these were also not big revelations.
Considering all of this, we will probably be getting hints about the events in the second cour when the opening changes around episode 13.
