Unlike other Titans who thrive in close-quarter combats, Zeke’s Beast Titan specializes in long-range fights. He would take a fairly large boulder, crush it into rubble, and throw it as hard as he could to the target. The result is a barrage of car-sized rocks raining down on the enemy, destroying houses, horses, and bodies in an instant. Despite this unique and terrifying power, however, there is one opponent that manages to defeat the Beast Titan on more than one occasion. His name is Levi Ackerman, also known as Humanity’s Stronger Soldier.
Levi fights the Beast Titan three times in the entire series. Well, twice if we discount the farce in the Battle of Liberio. The first one is on the hill outside the Shiganshina District during the Survey Corps’ effort to retake the Shiganshina. The second one is deep within the Titan Forest. On both occasions, here is what Levi does to defeat the terrifying Beast Titan.

Surprise Attacks
One of the key successes of Levi’s attack on the Beast Titan is the element of surprise. In both the Shiganshina and Titan Forest, Levi manages to catch Zeke off guard, which delays the Beast Titan’s response and significantly increases Levi’s chance of success.
On the Hill Overlooking the Shiganshina District
Close
The first fight between Levi and the Beast Titan happens on the hill overlooking the Shiganshina District. The Beast Titan is standing on top of the hill, throwing boulders at the Survey Corps, with lots of large Titans standing beside him.
A full-frontal assault is impossible because the Beast Titan would’ve seen Levi coming from miles away. So Erwin tells Levi to go around and use the large Titans as living pillars that will lead him directly to the Beast Titan. At the same time, Erwin leads the rest of the Survey Corps members in the charge toward the Beast Titan while shooting their signal smoke to the Beast. They essentially sacrifice their lives to distract Zeke.
Thanks to the cloud of smoke masking his movement and Zeke being too busy throwing boulders at the Survey Corps members, he doesn’t realize that Levi is already within a lethal range until it’s already too late. In less than a minute, Levi successfully defeats the Beast Titan.
In the Dense Titan Forest Between Wall Rose and Wall Maria
Close
The second fight between Levi and the Beast Titan happens amidst the dense woods of the Titan Forest. At this point, Levi is detaining Zeke, unaware that his squad has already consumed wine laced with Zeke’s spinal fluid. The moment Zeke shouts and uses his Founding Titan’s power, Levi’s entire squad members turn into Titans.
This is a good tactic actually because not only does it eliminate almost all of his captors, but all of those Titans also has the chance to kill Levi. After all, even somebody as powerful as Levi would hesitate to slaughter his own soldiers, right? One thing’s for sure, this chaos will allow Zeke to run away without having to worry about a thing. He couldn’t be more wrong.
After a brief moment of grappling with the weight of his duty, Levi steels himself and accepts the grim responsibility of ending his soldiers’ suffering. It doesn’t take a long time for him to decimate those Titans and catch up to Zeke. This fact not only surprised Zeke, but the sight of a blood-soaked Levi charging toward him sent a chill down his spine. And just like their first encounter, it doesn’t take a minute for Levi to take down Zeke in his Beast Titan form.
“Whatever gave you the idea that you could get away from me? Did you think you could get me to hesitate by turning my men into Titans? Do you have any idea how many of our own we’ve had to kill already?”

Speed and Agility
The second thing that enables Levi to defeat the Beast Titan, and any other Titans for that matter, is his inhuman speed and agility. A lot of people can use the 3D Maneuver Gear, but nobody can move midair like Levi. As long as his gear is working as intended, he will have an air superiority over anything. As long as he still has a blade, he will slice anything up.

One of the biggest downsides of the 3D Maneuver Gear is the fact that the cables need to be attached to a solid object. This means if the user is in a place with no solid objects to hang on to, such as in a savanna, this gear is pretty much useless. However, this also meant as long as there’s a fairly tall object around, be it buildings or Titans, then the 3D Maneuver Gear can be used to propel its user in any direction they want.
This is the idea behind Levi’s tactic in his first fight against the Beast Titan. Having numerous large Titans standing still at a certain distance from each other in a straight formation is no different than providing a highway to somebody who can use a 3D Maneuver Gear. And since it is Levi that we’re talking about here, he can kill those Titans while gliding through them at inhuman speed at the same time.
Once the Beast Titan realizes Levi is already at striking distance, he immediately tries to catch Levi with his long arm. In response, Levi executes his signature rolling maneuver while still moving toward the Beast Titan’s face at high speed, slicing the beast’s arm in the process. Next, Levi slices the Beast’s eyes, cuts the Achilles tendons from both of his legs, and forces Zeke out by carving up the Beast’s neck. In less than a minute, Levi has successfully subjugated the Beast Titan.

The location of their second fight is actually a lot more advantageous to Levi. After all, unlike in their first fight where Levi can only move forward one Titan at a time, a place with giant tall trees for as far as the eyes can see like in the Titan Forest, means Levi can pretty much move however he wants. He can shoot two cables to two different trees to propel himself at a higher speed. He can also move up, down, left, right, front, and back, whenever he wants.
On the contrary, this is the worst place possible for the Beast Titan. The dense row of trees will greatly hinder the Beast’s big body and long limbs. There are also no boulders around that he can use as a baseball ball, which means his signature throwing attack is pretty much sealed. As if that’s not enough, the leaves, branches, and shadows also greatly impair his vision. In a situation where Levi can move faster than he’s ever been while the Beast Titan can barely move and see anything, Levi’s win is pretty much guaranteed.
In summary, the two key tactics Levi employs in both fights are launching a relentless barrage of attacks that catch the Beast Titan off guard and doing so at a speed beyond the Beast Titan’s ability to react. This is how Captain Levi defeats Zeke’s Beast Titan twice.
