Westworld is a complicated series that explores the old West of America while simultaneously being a futuristic sci-fi Western series with androids and artificial reality. In the distant future, a sophisticated amusement park allows patrons to lie out their fantasies as outlaws, cowboys, and lone guns in the early days of the Wild West.
This fantasy is facilitated by a highly advanced computer system stocked with hyper-realistic androids that make the illusion as authentic as possible. Things go awry as androids around the park begin to act out of directives and even gain some sense of self-awareness. Things become bloody quickly as the controllers of this “westworld” try to regain control.

For fans of gritty period pieces, Barbarians is a great series set during the Roman Empire’s conflict with Germany and the tribes that inhabit the lands. After being primarily conquered, the many tribes of Germania Magna became enslaved by the Roman Empire’s mighty military. However, times grow worse, and the oppression and cruelty of Roman soldiers increase daily.
The tribes begin to speak in secret and prepare for rebellion. Each tribe bands together, and a simple conflict escalates to an all-out war. A single Roman soldier, abducted from a former tribe at a young age, struggles with his new life and who he really is. As tension rises, he must choose between his country and his people.

Hell on Wheels is a large-scale story with many moving pieces that follow the bloody trail of the construction of the first transcontinental railroad that bridged Iowa and the San Francisco Bay coast. The series mainly follows former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon, played by Anson Mount, who seeks to find the Union soldiers who murdered his family.
He sneaks onto Union territory and finds himself involved with the railway construction to get closer to his goal. Unfortunately, with every turn, Bohannon is pushed further from his goal as interior politics, race relations, and escalating conflict place him in a position he didn’t ask for. Hell on Wheels lasted five seasons and can be watched on Tubi for free.

Godless is a perfect series to jump into after watching American Primeval, and it perfectly matches the setting and tone of the series. Godless is set in a small mining town called Labelle that has come upon dark times after a devastating accident kills most of the men in a cave-in. Leaving just a few no-so-stand-up men and the remaining widows, the town is beset on all sides by vultures trying to pick the town clean of what’s left.
