Sleeping Beauty (1959) AnimationFantasyAdventureFamily
Release Date January 29, 1959 Cast Mary Costa , Eleanor Audley , Bill Shirley , Verna Felton , Barbara Luddy , Barbara Jo Allen
Maleficent is well remembered for her elegant and poetic speech, which can suddenly become an evil laugh or cackle as the villain’s true intentions are revealed. This juxtaposition adds to her overall menacing nature as her elegance conceals an evil character at heart.
Due to this, and her own vast power, Maleficent’s voice performance needed to be equally of such power, something her original voice actor, Eleanor Audley, did brilliantly. Audley’s performance stood out so much that she was used as a reference for animating the character. Audley was known for her powerful voice, which makes Maleficent even more intense and frightening, and thus iconic. Audley also voiced Lady Tremaine in Cinderella, another memorable character.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs AnimationFamilyMusical
Release Date December 21, 1937 Cast Adriana Caselotti , Roy Atwell , Pinto Colvig
As the first Disney Princess, Snow White is truly iconic. She has the special ability to communicate with animals, who love her due to her pure kindness. Her sweet-natured and gentle personality is perfectly captured in her vocal performance; Snow White’s high-pitched voice and sweet singing perfectly reflect her pure heart and childlike innocence.
Snow White is loved by many characters, and though she isn’t physically strong, she has a childish wonder and sees the good in everything. This makes her vulnerable to manipulation and, as such, she directly contrasts with the Evil Queen’s cunning and sinister motives. All these elements make Adriana Caselotti’s performance stand out, perfectly capturing the essence of, above all else, Snow White’s complete innocence.

Release Date September 4, 2020 Cast Yoson An , Doua Moua , Jet Li , Liu Yifei , Jason Scott Lee , Jimmy Wong , Tzi Ma , Gong Li , Donnie Yen , Chen Tang
Eddie Murphy may be more famous for the voice of Donkey in Shrek, however, his role as Mushu in Disney’s Mulan predates this. Mushu is Mulan’s guardian, and though he seeks his own personal gain in leading Mulan to become a hero of China, he deeply cares for her.
Mushu is the direct contrast in personality to Mulan’s steadfastness and maturity, portrayed excellently by Ming-Na Wen, and the way the two play off each other is why both performances are so memorable to this day. The unlikely duo makes for one of Disney’s most comedic yet heartwarming pairs. Mushu’s sense of humor, wordplay, and jokes make him iconic, yet he also shares gentle moments with Mulan, offering her encouragement. Murphy brings both sides of Mushu’s personality to life in a way that is well-loved by many fans. For a small character, Mushu has a big voice.

The Little Mermaid AnimationAdventureFamily
Release Date November 17, 1989 Cast Jodi Benson , Samuel E. Wright , Rene Auberjonois , christopher daniel barnes , Pat Carroll , Jason Marin
Pat Carroll’s performance brought a lot of dry humor to this blatantly wicked character, which also makes Ursula likable. Ursula certainly has a humorous side to her, which serves to conceal her truly evil coercion of Ariel. Yet, the villain has an air of sophistication, making her even more threatening, and highlighting her jealousy and malice really well.

Disney does a great job at featuring animated romances that capture the hearts of audiences even decades after release, and here are some favorites.
This is especially apparent in Ursula’s song, ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls.’ Carroll’s deep vocals place emphasis on Ursula’s sly motives, as she pretends she wants to help those in need. Carroll herself compared Ursula to an ‘”ex-Shakespearean actress who now sold cars”. Ursula appeals to Ariel’s desire to become human, yet after luring her in, tells her blatantly what happens if one can’t “pay the price”. A smart and manipulative villain, Ursula stands out as one of Disney’s most distinct characters.
6 Megara (Hercules) (1997)
Voiced By: Susan Egan
Close
Hercules (1997) ActionComedyAnimation
Release Date June 13, 1997 Cast Tate Donovan , Danny DeVito , James Woods , Susan Egan , Josh Keaton , Rip Torn , Samantha Eggar
Megara, and her performance by Susan Egan, stands as one of the most relatable characters in Disney’s animated movies. Megara has a unique kind of charm, being tough and sarcastic on the outside. However, this exterior secretly hides a broken heart and troubled past, making Meg one of the most three-dimensional characters, with a deeper backstory. Her false genuineness contrasts with Hercules’ genuine kindness and begins to change her. Meg struggles with her conscience and ends the story as a very different character than in the beginning.
Egan excels at bringing this unique character’s multi-layered personality to life in a way fans resonate with. Meg is funny, yet displays great emotion, like when standing up to Hades or pleading with Phil to help save a weakened Hercules. Prior to the movie, Egan had portrayed Belle in the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast. For Hercules, she portrayed Meg as the complete opposite of Belle’s kindness and goodness and thus created one of Disney’s most unique female characters.

This wide range of emotions helps make Moana a relatable character fans want to root for.

Though there have been plenty of great live-action Disney villains over the years, their animated counterparts tend to be a whole lot more evil.
Moana also has a humorous side, especially evident in her long-running banter with Maui, made memorable thanks to Dwayne Johnson’s captivating performance. At first, Maui belittles her, yet countless times she proves him wrong and teases him in return. The pair of opposites play off each other brilliantly and fans witness Moana’s childish excitement yet bravery, versus Maui’s strength yet inward cowardice. Cravalho’s performance perfectly demonstrates Moana’s character growth throughout the film. When Moana eventually achieves her mission, she ends the story with steadfastness and maturity she didn’t have before and leads her people as their master Wayfinder.
4 Hades (Hercules) (1997)
Voiced By: James Woods
Close
Hades is Disney’s funniest villain since his highly sarcastic attitude and wit lend themselves to a truly engaging viewing experience. Brought so iconically to life by James Woods, Hades’ rapid, informal speech and saying words for the sake of it really engage the audience. However, what can start out as humor can all of a sudden become anger, and Hades can go from mumbling to shouting in a matter of seconds. Though even when being threatened, Hades replies in the seemingly least threatening way possible, with jokes and clever wordplay.
However, his iconic mannerisms and jokey attitude serve to highlight his malice and contempt for Zeus even more. He also holds influence over the tragic Meg and is strikingly different from her snarky attitude. However, Hades uses her words against her, twisting her intentions for his own evil ends. All this hidden by a seemingly unserious demeanor makes this character even more menacing and spooky than may be first realized. Woods’ signature quick-fire performance really makes Hades stand out from other villains.
3 Elsa (Frozen) (2013)
Voiced By: Idina Menzel

Frozen AnimationAdventureComedy
Release Date November 27, 2013 Cast Edie McClurg , Kristen Bell , Santino Fontana , Idina Menzel , Robert Pine , Maurice LaMarche , Jonathan Groff , Stephen J. Anderson , Alan Tudyk , Josh Gad , Ciarán Hinds , Chris Williams
Elsa’s character changes the most out of any Disney protagonist, with Idina Menzel showcasing both Elsa’s vulnerability as well as her power. Elsa begins Frozen as a withdrawn, tense character, believing her ice powers are a terrible thing. Outwardly, she maintains composure but inwardly she feels awkward, the bottled-up emotion evident in her voice. This clashes severely with Anna’s enthusiasm, which adds even more tension and weight to the story thanks to Kristen Bell’s passionate performance of the character.
Uniquely, songs represent turning points in Elsa’s character. Menzel’s powerful vocals highlight Elsa’s own immense ability, and as she sings Elsa goes from being fearful and cautious to confident. Many of Elsa’s songs, from ‘Into The Unknown’ to ‘Let It Go’, are some of Disney’s most well-known. This is a testament to how Menzel’s captivating performance has impacted many listeners and brought this fan-favorite character to life so brilliantly.
2 Sebastian (The Little Mermaid) (1989)
Voiced By: Samuel E. Wright
Close
One of the most popular Disney characters, Sebastian is a very emotional character, which lends itself to much humor in The Little Mermaid. Adviser to King Triton, Sebastian is tasked with keeping watch over Ariel. Being in the human world brings out his emotions even more, such as witnessing fellow crabs being prepared for dinner by Chef Louis.
Sebastian’s seemingly calm composure can suddenly change often, becoming highly panicked and expressive, making for much humor. Yet, the crab also shows a soft side, and that he cares for Ariel’s wellbeing. Samuel E. Wright’s performance of Sebastian is truly memorable, largely thanks to the songs. From the lively ‘Under The Sea’ to the mellow ‘Kiss The Girl’, Wright’s range of tone helps bring out the many layers of Sebastian’s vivid personality.

Aladdin (1992) AnimationAdventureComedyFamilyFantasyMusicalRomance
Release Date November 25, 1992 Cast Scott Weinger , Robin Williams , Linda Larkin , Jonathan Freeman , Frank Welker , Gilbert Gottfried , Brad Kane , Lea Salonga
With one of the most memorable entrances of any Disney character, Aladdin’s Genie is extremely iconic due to Robin William’s highly energetic performance. Genie is extremely funny, with a rapid stream of jokes and wit, and a habit of suddenly going off on random tangents.
Yet, Williams accompanied Genie’s signature humor with a softer, emotional side. Genie cares for Aladdin and tries to advise him. He’s also sad, yet selfless, and would put an ‘eternity of servitude’ before Aladdin and Jasmine’s true love. However, when Aladdin wishes him free, viewers can’t help but feel glad for him. Due to Robin Williams’s stunning portrayal, Genie is so lovable and has fans rooting for him.
