Bleach: 7 Smallest Characters In The Series, Ranked

Anyone who’s familiar with Bleach will know all too well that size doesn’t equal power, as is demonstrated by these smaller characters.

Highlights

  • Size in Bleach doesn’t determine power – unique abilities like Bankai and Resurreccions make anyone powerful regardless of appearance.
  • Characters like Momo, Soi Fon, and Rukia prove that small stature doesn’t hinder strength and expertise in combat.
  • From Hiyori’s Kubikiri Orochi to Kon’s chaos, being small in Bleach doesn’t mean lacking power or impact in battles.

In the world of Bleach, the size of a character doesn’t provide an accurate representation of their overall power. Sure, the bigger and bulkier individuals will be able to use their stature to their advantage during battle, but since characters have so many unique abilities, like Bankai and Resurreccions, it means anyone can be immensely powerful, regardless of how small or big they may appear.

Because of how creative of a character designer Tite Kubo is, it also means the characters of Bleach come in all shapes and sizes, making everyone unique and providing a lot of variety to the wider cast. There have been several smaller Bleach characters that appear throughout the story who might not look very physically imposing on the surface, but who are still more than capable of cutting down their enemies when they need to.

7

Momo Hinamori

Height: 4′ 11″

  • First Appearance: Episode 24

Though Momo doesn’t show up for too much of the series during its later stages, she plays an important role during the Soul Society arc where she was used as one of Aizen’s pawns. Aizen manipulated Momo’s emotions to help hide his true intentions, causing the young girl to lash out at anyone who would consider the captain dangerous or suspicious, which even caused her to raise her sword against Hitsugaya, her childhood friend.

Momo may not be the largest Soul Reaper out there, but in truth, she doesn’t need to be as large as the likes of Kenpachi or Byakuya, since her expertise lies in Kido rather than swordfighting. She is still able to hold her own when attacked thanks to her powerful Tobiume Zanpakuto, but she often prefers to act as more of a support unit who can help her friends and decimate enemies with Kido blasts from a distance.

Soi Fon

Height: 4′ 11″

Soi Fon of Bleach

  • First Appearance: Episode 24

Soi Fon is one of the smallest captains in the Soul Society, but if anything, this suits her fighting style as she heavily relies on fast and sudden movements to outmaneuver her opponents before striking them from behind with an unexpected attack. Though Soi Fon appears as a cold and stoic warrior during her brief appearances near the beginning of the story, her true emotions start to shine through once she runs back into her old friend, Yoruichi.

The two were practically inseparable when growing up together, but when Yoruihci suddenly disappeared, it left Soi Fon feeling betrayed and lonely. This ultimately pushed her to train even harder, as she would aim to become stronger than her mentor, to the point where she soon became considered one of the most dangerous warriors in all the Soul Society, even though she may not look it initially.

5

Rukia Kuchiki

Height: 4′ 9″

Rukia unleashing her Shikai

  • First Appearance: Episode 1

Rukia is another Soul Reaper who can seem fairly innocent on the surface, but she secretly possesses an incredible amount of power which she’s only willing to let loose when the situation demands it. Alongside her witty personality, Rukia’s striking character design is another reason why she has become so beloved among fans. Despite being from an entirely different world than Ichigo, Rukia isn’t some giant behemoth or bulky brute, but instead, is a small and well-mannered warrior who provides fans with their first insight into the world of the Soul Reapers.

Rukia’s Zanpakuto, Sode no Shirayuki, is an ice-based blade which can deal some real damage when unleashed, especially in its Bankai form. She’s also able to use her wide array of Kido techniques to immobilize her opponents. In fact, she uses a Kido technique the first time she runs into Ichigo, making it clear right from the get-go that she’s not someone to be messed with.

4

Hiyori Sarugaki

Height: 4′ 4″

Hiyori with a box of paint and towels

  • First Appearance: Episode 112

Fans might remember Hiyori as the stubborn little brat who’s always bothering Ichigo at the beginning of the Arrancar arc, but it’s soon revealed that she actually was once a lieutenant of the 12th Division before being a victim of Aizen’s experiments. Therefore, while she may be on the shorter side in terms of her size, it’s clear Hiyori is still a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield, something she demonstrates during the final confrontation with Aizen where she puts her Kubikiri Orochi to good use.

It’s honestly staggering how much strength and power Hiyori possesses for her stature, as she can often be seen punching those who get on her nerves without a second thought, causing quite a bit of damage in the process. Hiyori is yet another example of a Bleach character whose appearance can be very deceiving, considering how strong she actually is in practice

3

Toshiro Hitsugaya

Height: 4′ 4″

Toshiro Hitsugaya Hyoten Hakkaso Bankai Bleach

  • First Appearance: Episode 24

Despite his young age compared to the other captains, Toshiro is still considered to be a prodigy among his peers, one who could potentially become the strongest of them all if he dedicates his time to training as much as possible. Toshiro was somehow able to hear the calling of his Zanpakuto early on in his life, and as a result, he was thrust into the Soul Society to become a soldier, quickly rising up the ranks until he was promoted to Captain. This means, by the time fans see him in the main Bleach story, he’s still fairly young, which explains his smaller height compared to the rest of the captains who all tower over him.

His size doesn’t have any impact on his overall power though, as Toshiro is capable of controlling one of the most feared Bankai techniques in the entire series: Daiguren Hyorinmaru. When entering this form, Toshiro’s entire body is covered in ice, which he then uses as extensions to help aid him in an intense battle, while also allowing him to take more of a beating thanks to his new armor.

Yachiru Kusajishi

Height: 3′ 7″

Yachiru Touching Kenpachi's Sword

  • First Appearnace: Episode 25

When Yachiru first appears in the series, she pops up on the shoulder of none other than Zaraki Kenpachi. Needless to say, this is an incredibly bizarre pairing, considering that one is a giant bloodthirsty killer, and the other is a young girl who never seems to take anything seriously. It can be easy to write Yachiru off as some sort of gag character given how out-of-place she feels, but not only is she Kenpachi’s lieutenant, but she also has a handful of deadly abilities up her sleeve too, which she will use when necessary.

Yachiru isn’t seen engaging in fights too much throughout the series, but she has at least been shown using her Shikai, which summons two terrifying monsters to help her out in combat. Yachiru’s small stature can mean she’s often seen as an easy target for the enemy, but with Kenpachi and her Zanpakuto companions looking out for her, she’s always as happy as can be.

1

Kon

Height: 1″

Ken performing a stylish pose on Ichigo's room floor

  • First Appearance: Episode 6

Unlike every other character on this list, Kon doesn’t have any hidden power or ability to make up for his size. Instead, he’s simply a modified soul who is tasked with watching over Ichigo’s body while he fulfills his Soul Reaper duties. In all honesty, Kon is the last person that someone would want to be helping them out with this, since every time he assumes control, he always manages to cause a tremendous amount of chaos while acting as Ichigo.

Kon is usually considered to be a throwaway character whose main role is to add some humor to the story now and again, so it came as a huge surprise to fans that he even managed to appear during the Thousand Year Blood War at the end of the series. Kon’s miniature size does mean that he can easily be picked up and thrown around, which he often is, by friend and foe alike, but over the years, many people have started to warm up to this little guy who’s been around since the beginning of the story.
