Summary
- Shorter arcs offer quick reads, while longer ones are more action-packed and intense.
- Fullbring Arc is the shortest but worth reading for its uniqueness.
- Thousand-Year Blood War is the longest, packed with epic battles and character development.
Bleach‘s story may seem long at first, but if fans want to explore a particular section of Ichigo’s adventure, they can simply dive into a specific arc. However, like a lot of shōnen series, Bleach‘s arcs differ greatly in their overall length, with some being no more than a few volumes, and others becoming entire sagas due to how long and expansive they are, being packed full of fights, characters, and lore dumps.

While shorter arcs can be much easier to re-read, or a good way for newcomers to get a taste of the series without needing to read or watch hundreds of episodes or chapters, longer arcs tend to be more compelling and intense. Needless to say, the length of an arc doesn’t inherently define its overall quality, but it can impact its readability; so, for anyone wondering, here is a rundown of the total number of chapters relating to each section of the Bleach story.
As the anime lengths vary to the manga, this list will only focus on the official total manga chapters.
7
Arrancar Invasion Arc
Chapters: 40
Close
Admittedly, this arc is essentially just a setup for the much longer arcs that would proceed it, which is why it clocks in as the shortest in the series. This isn’t to say that there’s still not a lot to love here though, as the introduction of the Arrancar leads to some great fights, including one featuring Ikkaku, who unleashes his Bankai for the very first time. It’s also the arc that features the infamous scene of Grimmjow battering Ichigo to a bloody pulp upon the two meeting for the very first time.
The Arrancar Invasion arc set the stage for what was to come and ensured fans that this new antagonistic force was not to be taken lightly, considering they were able to hold their own against plenty of formidable Soul Reapers.
6
Fullbring Arc
Chapters: 55
Close
By far the most divisive arc in Bleach is the Fullbring Arc. This arc comes at an awkward spot in the story, acting as the bridge between the downfall of Aizen and the Thousand Year Blood War. As a result, it’s essentially one big training arc where Ichigo meets a new and mysterious group known as the Fullbringers who promise to restore his Soul Reaper powers, though there are still a few twists and turns here and there that help keep things unpredictable.

The season pass for Bleach: Rebirth of Souls will be featuring characters from the final arc in the story, but who realistically could make the cut?
Posts
The reason the arc is seen as somewhat controversial is because it is a lot slower and less action-focused than what many fans were used to, which also feeds into the shorter length. Still, despite what some may say, the Fullbring arc definitely isn’t worth skipping, and if anything, can be a nice and cozy read, considering it’s much shorter and more slice-of-life than the other story arcs.
5
Substitute Shinigami Arc
Chapters: 70
Close
The very first arc in the series is mostly dedicated to introducing the main cast of characters, alongside the Hollows, who act as the main antagonists for this section of the story. While many episodes and chapters of the Substitute Shinigami Arc play out like monster-of-the-week scenarios where Ichigo, Rukia, and the gang must take down a fresh new Hollow prowling around Karakura Town, there’s also a good amount of character and story development packed in here too.
Whether it’s Ichigo’s training with Kisuke, Rukia appearing in the World of the Living, or the introduction of the Soul reapers with Byakuya and Renji at the very end, this is certainly an arc that newcomers shouldn’t skip over, especially since it’s not all that long, making for a fun and lighthearted read.
4
Hueco Mundo Arc
Chapters: 74
Close
After Orihime is kidnapped by Aizen and taken to the dark and mysterious world known as Hueco Mundo, Ichigo and his team set out to rescue her, but are confronted by Aizen’s ruthless army of Arrancar along their travels. The most formidable members of this army are the Espada; a group of immensely powerful Arrancar who push Ichigo and his friends to their limits, especially Ichigo himself, who is forced to take on numerous enemies all while keeping control of his Hollow powers.
The reason for the moderate length of this arc is due to just how action-packed it is from beginning to end. In order to give every Arrancar a chance to shine, Kubo wanted to show off as many of their abilities in-battle as possible, and when paired with the character development given to Ichigo and Orihime specifically, along with some of the villains, it results in an arc which sits at the middle of the road in terms of length.
3
Fake Karakura Town
Chapters: 107
Close
The Fake Karakura Town arc makes for a stressful watch or read. By this point in the story, Aizen was inches away from executing his plan of consuming the souls of Karakura Town to activate the Hogyoku, with the only ones standing in his way being the entire Gotei 13, and the Vizards. As a result, much of this arc revolves around this nail-biting battle which sees most of Aizen and his Espada taking on the Soul Reapers, leading to some of the most iconic fights in the entire series.

The second half of the arc focuses on Ichigo, who must train with his father to become strong enough to stop Aizen once and for all. Packed in between all of this is a flashback covering Shinji and the Vizards’ past, showing how they came to acquire Hollow Masks, and why they were kicked out of the Soul Society. This is an arc that succeeds in showcasing a bunch of new powers and abilities, while also wrapping up plenty of loose ends, which is why it’s a good thing that it was given enough time to show all of this without ever feeling rushed.
2
Soul Society Rescue Arc
Chapters: 112
Close
The Soul Society arc is where Bleach starts to find its footing as a series, being what many fans consider to be the best part of the entire story thanks to its high stakes and memorable fights. Ichigo and his friends are on a mission to save Rukia from imprisonment, but along the way, they must take on numerous powerful Lieutenants and Captains who all abide by the laws of the Soul Society; laws which Ichigo is more than willing to break if it means saving his friend.
In just over 100 chapters, author Tite Kubo managed to create an incredible story arc that not only introduces a ton of new characters in the Soul Reapers but also some outstanding fights. Whether it’s Ichigo’s epic duel with Renji, the one-sided squash match between Chad and Kyoraku, or even the revenge-fueled bout between Uryu and Mayuri, one only needs to look at this arc to see why Bleach‘s fights are held in such high regard. This isn’t even mentioning the in-fighting that takes place between the Soul Reapers themselves, who all get to show what they’re made of in this early arc.
1
Thousand-Year Blood War
Chapters: 206
Close
By far the longest arc in Bleach is the Thousand-Year Blood War. There’s honestly so much content included in this arc that it could essentially be its own story entirely, but it all kicks off with Yhwach, the self-proclaimed king of the Quincy, invading the Soul Society and killing thousands of Soul Reapers in the process. This begins the war between the two factions which sees virtually every character from every faction in the story getting involved, along with plenty of newcomers showing up as part of the new Sternritter faction.
Ichigo would also receive a lot of development through this arc, learning to accept his lineage, and also the many powers that reside within him. The anime has done an excellent job adapting this fan-favorite section of the story, even adding a few extra additions, including a brand-new fight between Uryu and Renji. In order for Kubo to get across just how grand and epic this long-awaited battle between Soul Reapers and Quincy truly is, he decided to make it a lot longer than the others, which certainly isn’t a bad thing considering how much of a joy it is to read and watch.
