The following contains spoilers for BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 – The Separation, Episode 4, “Heart of Wolf”, now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
The focus of the 4th episode of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 – The Separation was teased in the ending poem of the third episode. Titled, “Heart of Wolf”, episode 17 overall of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc will shed some light on the developments of returning 7th Squad Captain Sajin Komamura, who returned to the Seireitei in the midst of the second round of the conflict with the Quincies. Quickly zooming past Bambietta Basterbine who defeated him in the previous cours of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, Komamura crossed paths with 5th Squad Captain Shinji Hirako who let him advance towards his target – Yhwach.
This brief appearance in episode 3, “The Fundamental Virulence” and the ending poem narrated by Komamura himself, the wolf-Captain might be an important player in the rapidly deteriorating situation with the Quincies who have simultaneously unleashed their trump-cards across the battlefield.
The Return to Self
One of the major themes with Komamura’s character is his the deep sense of shame and trauma from his various experiences of discrimination based on his appearance, given the fact that he’s a werewolf. He goes a large part of his appearances during the Soul Society arc with a large helmet covering his head, and gloves to cover his furry hands. Historically, his friendship with would-be traitor and former 9th Squad Captain Kaname Tōsen is an important pillar in Komamura establishing his self-esteem and thus, he had also been reeling over Tōsen’s close-support of the various atrocities performed by Sōsuke Aizen. Having felt gratitude towards the former Captain-Commander for allowing him into the ranks of the Gotei 13 despite not being human, Komamura was greatly affected by the death of Yamamoto Genryusai, and left the Seireitei to visit a large cave not long after the memorial ceremony, where he met up with his great-grandfather, the Wolf Great Elder.
Respect Your Elders
Komamura and Wolf Clan Leader – BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 13
The Great Elder is an extremely large dog, so large that Komamura appears small in comparison despite being the tallest Captain in the Seireitei at a lofty 2,88m (9’5½”). In the final episode of the first cours of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, “The Blade is Me”, The Seireitei is in a period of preparation for the next battle, and various captains are training to compensate for their lost Bankai. Komamura’s visit to the cave is not fully explored, and the Elder is definitely not happy to see him there, nor ready to change any of his values to support Komamura’s desire to help protect a world in which he could not be himself. The shame central to Komamura’s character stood to impede him in his desire to gain a newfound power, and it appeared that the Elder wasn’t about to hand over any secrets without a fight.
The implications of the conversation that Komamura and his great-grandfather have in the cave echo some major similarities to the sentiments of the Quincies, as it is greatly suggested that the Wolf Clan was somehow subjugated, or subject to some kind of danger in life on the surface, thus opting to move into the shadows, at least in a different sense. Komamura tries to explain that times are different, but the sentiment behind the old adage involving old dogs and tricks reigns true in this case: there’s no way the Great Elder will be handing over his family’s close-guarded secrets for the sake of the Seireitei, regardless of Komamura’s prostration. He emphasizes the separation by telling Komamura that Shinigami problems aren’t necessarily their problems, rising up menacingly as Komamura reasserts his position.
The Secret
Komamura vs Wolf Clan Great Elder – BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 13
Given the recent developments regarding the Shinigami who had their Bankai stolen, it’s safe to say Komamura came out of that cave with something that could help in the fight, but what it is hasn’t been revealed in the anime just yet, but “Heart of Wolf” will probably reveal all that we need to know. Komamura’s rebuff of Bambietta’s taunts and suggestions that they settle the score from their first encounter in favour of bolting towards Yhwach himself point towards a monstrous increase in his combat ability, as while Komamura is usually valiant and brave in combat, he’s hardly ever as eager to charge into a fight as he is in BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2, episode 3.
It’s also important to note his focus on avenging Yamamoto affects his logic and temperament, There is also the factor of Komamura’s freshly-returned Bankai, Kokujō Tengen Myō’ō, which will most definitely be crucial in whatever enemies await him, not to mention his recent entry to the battle this time, which means he’s got stamina to spare and assist his injured comrades. The secret that he learned from his great-grandfather will also flesh out some of the lore brought out by the exploration into Komamura’s heritage and origins, and perhaps even explain the exact reasons behind the Great Elder’s refusal to get involved in the happenings in Soul Society.
