The following contains spoilers for BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2, Episode 5, “Rages at Ringside”, available for streaming on Hulu and Disney+.The 5th episode of the second cours of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, titled “Rages at Ringside” was the 18th overall of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc adaptation which featured various significant moments, but stood out for having a post-credits scene unlike the ones before it. Unlike the scenes giving an ominous glimpse into Ichigo’s training with Ichibe Hyōsube and the mysterious “Irazusando”, this episode of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 used its post-credits scene to reveal some vital information about the antagonist, Yhwach.

While we know a few things about the Quincies and Yhwach, the Quincy King remains a mysterious presence for the most part; however, this episode’s revelation of something to do with his relationship with his right-hand man Jugram Haschwalth is definitely going to be significant later on. As the successor of Yhwach, Haschwalth believes it to be necessary for Uryū to know a thing or two about the King.

Yhwach Reabsorbs Mask De Masculine – BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 5Yhwach Reabsorbs Mask De Masculine – BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 5

Renji’s defeat of Mask De Masculine showed a recurring mechanic seen in Yhwach’s skills: his ability to reabsorb the powers of his fallen soldiers. Given that Yhwach is the one who personally doles out power through the Schrift-assignment ritual, and what is known about the cataclysmic event in which he forcibly removes the power he has imparted from the very souls of those he has deemed unworthy known as the Auswählen, Yhwach’s reabsorption ability is not new. However, the death of Mask De Masculine, or rather, James, meant that we could see that mechanic at play in a way that we haven’t before. What happened after the absorption of James’ power is crucial; as Yhwach disappears into a shadowy mist, the mist reforms into Jugram Haschwalth – they are two sides of the same coin.

Yhwach and Haschwalth – BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 5Yhwach and Haschwalth – BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 5

As Haschwalth puts it, reabsorbing the powers of the deceased also leaves Yhwach needing rest, and in that time while “Yhwach” sleeps, Haschwalth wakes. The reason for the short duration of the previous invasion was due to the fact that Yhwach was unable to operate outside of the boundaries of the Schatten Bereich (“Shadow Realm”) for a prolonged period of time. While they may be “one” for the sake of this discussion, Yhwach and Haschwalth are not necessarily bound in a way that makes only one available at a certain time. During the first cours of BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War, while Haschwalth was on the battlefield, the role of “Yhwach” was in fact played by one of the Sternritter Y’s – Royd Lloyd, who impersonated Yhwach in the battle against Genryūsai. The real Yhwach had gone on to meet with Sōsuke Aizen, and later returned to absorb Royd’s powers and kill the former Captain-Commander. Visually, BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War communicates their Captain and Lieutenant dynamic through various shots of Yhwach at the foreground and Haschwalth in the backgound; however, when Haschwalth is the subject, Yhwach is never seen in the same frame.

In BLEACH: Thousand-Year Blood War episode 6, titled “The White Haze”, Haschwalth further explains and displays Yhwach’s ability to absorb the powers of the deceased Quincies from his army, adding that it isn’t just that he reabsorbs the power he once doled out; he absorbs the host’s development and mastery of that power from their experiences. As a result, the power he took from the remains of Mask De Masculine was not only what he gave out, but also De Masculine’s growth of that power. Essentially, Yhwach’s Schrift-assignment ritual is overwhelmingly advantageous to him in the long run because even if his forces dwindle, he becomes ever-increasingly more powerful in connection to their demise. Haschwalth takes Uryū to another hall within Silbern, where those who lost in combat are held prisoner and await capital punishment for their failure. Using what looks like Yhwach’s sword, Haschwalth executes Sternritter I – The Iron, Cang Du, as well as Sternritter K, BG-9; who lost to the Hollowfied Bankai of 10th Squad Captain Hitsugaya and 2nd Squad, Special Ops Division Captain Soi-Fon respectively.

Their powers are swiftly absorbed by Yhwach as well, and Haschwalth effectively explains this mechanic behind the Quincy King’s power in a manner that feels like a litmus test and a threat – on one hand, it makes Uryū privy to some major secret of the Quincies, as well as showing him what happens when one defies or disappoints their king. The significance of this sequence is not just about the mysteries of the overpowered antagonist, but it also gives Uryū a first-hand view of a small-scale Auswählen. Haschwalth explains that there is no escape, as the Schrift is engraved into the very souls of those who consume Yhwach’s blood, and that he must continue to absorb these souls, or else… In familiar fashion, Haschwalth’s voice is cut off as his lips mouth that which is unspeakable. What can be assumed by the censure is that even this secret is far more valuable than Yhwach’s reabsorption ability. Whatever the secret is, it must again be related to Yhwach’s unique composition as a reishi-distributing Quincy.
