Ikemoto has managed to create some of the most exciting plot developments in the story, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats, and more importantly, developing some intriguing side characters. Upon being asked about how he ended up creating his brilliant characters, Ikemoto explained his thought process behind the character construction process.
How Ikemoto Creates His Boruto Characters
- Ikemoto Develops Characters Based On Need
- A Unique Twist Is Added To All Characters
Ikemoto has created some incredible Boruto characters over the years. It can be said that the character writing in the story, while not the best, has picked up quite a bit over the years. Whereas Ikemoto used to struggle quite a bit when writing new characters and often resorted to using old Naruto characters to add depth to the story, as they were already well-established characters, he now introduces intriguing characters with their own motivations effortlessly.
Don’t touch the Seventh Hokage. – Kawaki
Each of his characters is given a very intriguing role to play in the story, and much of that is based on what is needed in the plot at the moment. Many authors develop exciting characters and then shape them in a way that makes the story more exciting, adding to them as they go. For Ikemoto, things are different. He ends up creating characters based on what the main cast needs, and this approach, while not uncommon, is certainly very interesting to see. Then, these characters defy the expectations of the fans, all the while adding a unique twist to the story and growing richer as the story continues.
Here’s what Ikemoto had to say about creating new Boruto characters upon being asked about the process:
First, there’s the role of the character. The basic premise is to create a character based on needs. After that, I make sure to give them an unexpected aspect. In Ada’s case, she has abilities that would allow her to dominate the world. Instead she prioritizes love and has a silly side to her. There’s also the character of Hidari, who evokes Sasuke. On one hand, he displays jutsu and techniques that are reminiscent of Sasuke. But on the other hand, he reveals himself to be totally out of the box and has nothing to do with Sasuke. To sum up, it’s about Gap Moe. – Ikemoto
Fans might be confused about what Ikemoto means by Gap Moe. It is simply a difference in reality from what fans would expect of a particular character. Ikemoto himself paints a good example of this. Ada is born with tremendous power in the Boruto series. After all, she has the ability to do just about anything with her Omnipotence. However, Ada’s lack of true love in life makes her set out on her own personal quest, setting aside her needs to conquer and destroy, which is something fans would normally expect from a character of her power level.
Similarly, Hidari is Sasuke’s clone, in a way. As such, fans would expect Hidari to be like him, act aloof, and short-tempered, among other things. But, Hidari is quite different and it is clear for the fans to see. He is more open than Sasuke and his quest for knowledge makes him quite a different character to what fans would expect.

When it comes to the Boruto series, it is no surprise to know that the main characters around whom the story revolves, that is, Boruto Uzumaki and Kawaki, are the best of characters. Technically, Boruto wasn’t created by Ikemoto. However, it is safe to say that he’s made the character his own by adding his twists to him and writing him brilliantly over the years. Boruto might be a character as good as Naruto, or even other Naruto characters, for that matter, but he’s unique in his own way and that’s what makes him special. Fans have come to adore Boruto over the years and it goes without saying that his overall growth has been sensational to watch, both from a character growth and strength point of view.
I want to be a protector like Uncle Sasuke. – Boruto
As far as Kawaki goes, the majority of character writing has been handled by Ikemoto on his own and needless to say this character has a solid grip on the fans’ hearts. Having a tragic past, and with that, unshakable determination, makes Kawaki a brilliant character.

His growth has been phenomenal to watch and fans saw him going from an untrusting individual to opening his heart to the family in Konoha. Still, Kawaki is a complicated character whose actions polarising at times, yet in his own way, meant to do good. That’s what Ikemoto means by Gap Moe and this trope is brilliantly utilized here in the story, once again.

Compelling character writing aside, Ikemoto has already given fans enough to keep them on the edge of their seats by introducing some very overpowered characters in the story over the years. From the likes of Momoshiki Otsutsuki, whom he wrote in large parts, all the way to Isshiki, Ikemoto has consistently introduced some of the most intriguing overpowered characters in the story. More recently, fans heard about the god known as Shibai Otsutsuki, and it is safe to say that he’s one to watch out for, despite existing in a different realm entirely now.
In Two Blue Vortex, Ikemoto has introduced fans to more compelling yet overpowered characters, with Jura being the one whom all fans have their eyes on. With the plot getting more exciting than ever before, fans know that Jura is going to become even more fascinating and, at the same time, the plot of Boruto will take yet another exciting turn. Needless to say, while Boruto might not be the best story out there, the author does his best to come up with compelling characters now and then, and more often than not, he succeeds in his endeavors. Fans are excited to see how the already introduced Boruto characters will develop from here onwards, and what path the story takes following the resolution of the conflict with the Shinju.
Boruto is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of Boruto, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 18, is set to be January 20, 2025.
