Warning: The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 1, “Boruto” by Masashi Kishimoto, illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto, translated by Mari Morimoto, and Lettered by Snir Aharon, available in English from Viz Media.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is finally well and underway and after a long wait, fans finally got to see their favorite characters return once again, this time, all grown up. Boruto has certainly enjoyed a decent run over the course of the past few years, however, the series was desperately in need of a new direction. That is precisely why a completely new manga began after the completion of the first part of the series.
Now, instead of Boruto chapter 81, fans are being treated to Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 1. That said, the difference it makes is not all that huge, as evident from the very first chapter. Fans got to see their favorite characters return once again and the feel of the story remains largely the same.
The New Hokage
One of the biggest shockers in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 1 came at the very beginning. Fans got to see Sarada Uchiha outside of the Hokage office and it was quite good to see her new design right off the bat. Previously, Sarada’s design was teased in a promotional art for the series and fans appeared to be absolutely in love with how cool it looked. In the first chapter, fans finally got a proper look at it and the design is certainly one that splits opinion among them. As has been the case with the vast majority of Ikemoto designs, what Sarada is wearing does not appear to be an outfit that is fit for a ninja.
Instead, she looks more like a pop star, which, for whatever reason, was the design choice that the illustrator went with. Fans can only hope that the anime does better when it adapts her new design. Regardless, Sarada’s design was certainly not the biggest shock that fans experience in this scene. It was the choice for the 8th Hokage of Konoha. Immediately into Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 1, fans realized that Shikamaru had been made the 8th Hokage of the village after the news about the death of Naruto Uzumaki was made public. Shikamaru was seen wearing the Hokage cloak, advising Sarada that she needs to let go of Boruto and that he is a criminal. According to him, Sarada has not been behaving like a proper Shinobi and this will affect her chances of becoming Hokage in the future. By the looks of it, Konohamaru appears to be the assistant to Shikamaru at this point.
Ada’s Powers
While Shikamaru certainly left a mark as the 8th Hokage and told Sarada that Boruto will be treated as a criminal regardless of what she does, fans got to see that Sarada has a very strong conviction to never give up on her friend. She is keen to find out a way to reverse the changes that happened on that fateful day. Along with Sumire, fans got to see Sarada visit Ada once again, in the hopes of finding ways to reverse all the changes. Unfortunately, she was only met with more confusion as Ada certainly did not have any way to reverse the changes.
According to her, even if Sarada did tell everyone about the power of Omnipotence and the fact that their memory was rewritten, nobody would believe her, given that the entire world had their memories altered and Sarada and Sumire are just two exceptions. Naturally, one would assume that they are the ones who are wrong and everyone can’t have their memories changed somehow.
Ikemoto also decided to sow some seeds of doubt between these two parties in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 1. It appears that Ada has started to doubt whether Sarada and Sumire are truly attracted to her or not. As mentioned by Shikamaru previously, if she figures it out, Daemon could potentially try to eliminate them and if that happens, their entire plan will go to waste. For now, Sarada and Sumire are pretending to be attracted to her and, at the same time, getting close to a solution to fix the problem that Boruto is facing.
Code’s Attack
Fans also got a look at Kawaki as well as Mitsuki in the chapter. The two seemed to be engaged in a conversation with each other, with Kawaki being quite cold to him. As expected, Mitsuki now believes that Kawaki is his sun and the man destined to lead him to finding his true self. However, it appears that even Mitsuki has doubts placed in himself now, given that Kawaki certainly does not give him the same feeling that Boruto once did. When it comes to Kawaki, his new design was also revealed to the fans properly and, as expected, it is an edgier version of his old self. Fans also got to see him visit the dimension of Daikokuten, where Naruto and Hinata are currently asleep. Of course, not much has changed there.
To the surprise of the fans, thanks started moving incredibly fast as Konoha was immediately under attack by Code. Using the Grimes, he decided to move quickly, and thus, a war began in the village. Code revealed that he was looking for none other than Boruto Uzumaki and that he had continued his search over the 3-year timeskip. Sarada did as well as she could against the Grimes and Konoha soon started their counter attack, realizing that Code had finally returned with all his wrath. His goal is, naturally, to destroy Konoha and send a message out to Boruto Uzumaki.
Boruto Uzumaki Returns
The most exciting part of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex came at the very end of the chapter, where Boruto suddenly appeared in Konoha, giving fans a proper look at his new design after the timeskip. Boruto appears to have grown quite a lot and not just in terms of his physical appearance, but also in terms of his power. He was effortlessly able to get in front of Code and step on his face shortly afterwards. Boruto made his presence known and the entire village locked on the Hokage killer as well. Meanwhile, Kawaki also made it to the scene immediately and now, a three-way battle between these characters looks like it is on the cards.
Overall, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 1 was certainly interesting but did not have all that much to offer. That said, it did set up things for the next chapter, which is where the vast majority of the action will go down. Fans have quite a lot of questions left, such as the fate of Sasuke Uchiha, that they are looking to be answered in the next chapter. With an extra-long chapter, fans certainly enjoyed this month’s Boruto, and there is certainly more to come. Hopefully, the new manga learns from the mistake of its predecessor and focuses far better on all the characters involved, and elevates the story to a whole new level.
