Boruto: Two Blue Vortex finally released its very first chapter earlier today and it is safe to say that fans were incredibly excited at reading one of their favorite series again after such a long wait. Previously, Boruto went on a hiatus to prepare for the second part of the story. Fans initially expected for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations to continue with chapter 81, however, it was revealed later on that Part 2 of Boruto would be an entirely different series.
With 3 years having passed at the beginning of the new series, quite a lot has changed in the world of ninja.
Naruto Uzumaki, the savior of the world, is no longer around and that only meant that Konoha was quite unstable. To bring things under control, it was expected of Konoha to appoint a new Hokage. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 1, it was revealed to the fans that Shikamaru was made the 8th Hokage.
The Death Of The Seventh Hokage
Naruto Uzumaki is certainly the most iconic character in the entire franchise, including Boruto, and he was made the Seventh Hokage of Konoha after the conclusion of the main story. He aimed to become Hokage from the very beginning of his journey as a ninja and he accomplished this later on in the series, when he earned the acknowledgment of everyone around him. Naruto became a war hero and saved the entire world from destruction during the 4th Great Ninja War. Kakashi filled in as the Sixth Hokage of the village after the war and, a few years later, Naruto Uzumaki followed.
In the Boruto era, Naruto is seen in the role of Hokage and it appears to be a life that he doesn’t really enjoy all that much. Nonetheless, this was Naruto’s dream and fans were able to see him live it out. Things changed drastically when the Otsutsuki Clan made their mark in the story. Naruto Uzumaki now had to fight much stronger characters and, what’s worse, the authors decided to knock him from his pedestal just to give Boruto Uzumaki a chance to shine. Naruto’s biggest power source, Kurama, was stripped away from him and, later on, he was sealed away in an entirely different dimension by Kawaki. Furthermore, with the power of Omnipotence, used by Ada, the world was made to believe that Boruto Uzumaki was the killer of the Seventh Hokage and that Kawaki was actually the true-born son of Naruto. Their lives had essentially switched places and Boruto ended up leaving the village.
The 8th Hokage Of Konoha
As soon as Omnipotence took effect, Naruto Uzumaki’s death was announced all over the world. Even though Naruto is alive and safe inside the dimension of Daikokuten, the world believes that he is dead and Boruto Uzumaki killed him. Sasuke Uchiha ended up escaping from the village with Boruto and, perhaps, the world sees him as a traitor as well. In normal conditions, Sasuke would have been made the Hokage of the village, however, things took a very strange turn for Konoha when Sasuke left the village as well. For them, the Seventh Hokage had now been killed and the need for the 8th Hokage thus arose.
There are quite a lot of characters that could have filled this role efficiently. For one, Sakura Haruno is a character that would have been perfect for the job of the 8th Hokage. Her mentor, Tsunade filled this position herself and did exceedingly well long ago. There was no reason for Sakura to not be the Hokage. Even if Sakura was not ready to take on such responsibility, Kakashi was certainly another choice. Given that he is still quite young, Kakashi could have filled in for this position for a few years, until someone younger, such as Konohamaru, became worthy of taking this title. Strangely enough, the village went with Shikamaru as an option for the 8th Hokage.
Why Shikamaru Was Made The 8th Hokage
There is no exact reason for why Shikamaru was made the 8th Hokage, however, there are a few positives to him assuming this position. For one, Shikamaru is one of the smartest people in the village and Konoha certainly needs him. While he was serving the position of advisor at first, much of his advice fell on deaf ears because Naruto had his own way of doing things. As the Hokage, he can protect the village better. In fact, even Asuma believed that Shikamaru would make a fantastic Hokage, and, now, precisely that has ended up happening.
Another reason why Shikamaru could have been made the 8th Hokage is that he is very balanced as a ninja. Although he isn’t the strongest, he has proven in the past that strength isn’t necessary to defeat enemies. Shikamaru can figure out things way better with all power in his hand and perhaps, that is where the authors were going with this decision. It is also possible that every other candidate for the position of Hokage was simply not interested or, had other responsibilities at their hands. For instance, Sakura is the head of the medical unit in Konoha, and becoming the Hokage would mean giving up that role. Similarly, Kakashi is in his retirement and might not have wanted to become the Hokage once again. Meanwhile, Konohamaru doesn’t appear to be ready in any sense to assume this position and that would mean that Shikamaru was forced to take on the role of the 8th Hokage.
What The Future Holds For Naruto
Fans know for a fact that Naruto Uzumaki is alive and well. There are also quite a few characters in the world of Naruto who know this secret as well. To the people of Konoha, however, Naruto Uzumaki is dead. This raises quite a problem for the future of the series. At some point, Naruto Uzumaki is going to return. Kawaki cannot keep him locked away in the pocket dimension forever. When things are settled between Boruto and Kawaki, Naruto Uzumaki will most likely be freed and return to the village. At that point, fans will be faced with quite a strange problem that will see Shikamaru having taken over Naruto’s dream position. With an 8th Hokage, Naruto will certainly not get to assume this position again. This would mean that Naruto has to live out the rest of his life as a retired ninja already, or, take a role similar to that of Sasuke.
While this seems counterproductive at first, it might actually benefit the character of Naruto Uzumaki. For one, he will be allowed to spend more time with his family. The duties of being Hokage crippled his bond with his family to quite an extent. Now, with Shikamaru as the Hokage, Naruto will be free to spend as much time with his family as he wants. At the same time, this will also allow Naruto to train his abilities further. Being in the Hokage’s office certainly made Naruto rusty to quite an extent and this is something that even Kurama commented on once. Naruto needs to return to the battlefield and start training. This is truer than ever before now, given that he is no longer the superhuman that he once was. Perhaps, Shikamaru becoming the 8th Hokage wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
