There were many great characters in Breaking Bad, with all of them serving a purpose, however small. However, as with every TV show, some characters were better than others. It wasn’t just the regular characters, cameo characters who served a purpose were also well-received by fans. Walt is one of the most sinister evil scientists on TV, and his interactions with other characters provide fans with plenty of great moments and compelling dialogue.
Updated on November 17, 2023, by Ritwik Mitra: Breaking Bad is one of the greatest shows, and it’s easy to see why so many people just can’t get enough of this masterpiece. Vince Gilligan’s masterpiece started out on a slow burn before the director got into his groove and let people enjoy a riveting drama series that is full to the brim with some of the greatest characters in TV history. Here’s how some of the best Breaking Bad characters rank up.
17 Huell Babineaux
A Hilarious Enforcer Who Has Ties With Saul Goodman
Debut Episode:
(Season 4, Episode 1)
One of the more hilarious characters in the show is Huell Babineaux. An enforcer who acts as Saul Goodman’s bodyguard, Huell’s deadpan delivery and excellent comedic timing make him a treat to witness on-screen.
That being said, Huell is also pretty competent and does whatever job he’s asked to do without questioning things too much. Sure, there are times when he slips up in the series, but those are few and far between.
16 Gale Boetticher
A Person Obsessed With Walt, Only To Become A Thorn In His Idol’s Side
Debut Episode:
Sunset(Season 3, Episode 6)
After being diagnosed with cancer, Walter decided to walk his own path in life. After being a nobody for most of his life, Walter turned into a meth cook who delved into a life of crime and ended up being someone. However, there were many lives lost on the path to fuel his ego, with Gale being one of his many indirect victims.
He is considered by many to be one of the better characters on the show. Sure, he may have fallen into a life of crime, but Gale was a sweet human who genuinely appreciated Walter’s genius and was always in awe of his idol. If there was one character in Breaking Bad who deserved to live, it was him.
15 Marie Schrader
Skyler’s Sister And Hank’s Wife
Debut Episode:
Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)
The wife of Hank and sister to Skylar, Marie Schrader was a funny character who had her own faults and quirks throughout the show.
Though she didn’t always have much to do in terms of the main storyline, Marie was important as a side character and member of the main family who was always present when it counted and acted as a source of support for both Skylar and Hank. Fans of Marie will know that she gave one of the best Breaking Bad cameos in Better Call Saul.
14 Tuco Salamanca
A Drug Kingpin With A Crazy Side
Debut Episode:
Crazy Handful of Nothin’ (Season 1, Episode 6)
Tuco was the first major villain of the Breaking Bad series and was frighteningly erratic. A meth user who had his own empire answering to the Mexican Cartel (made up of his family), he was Walt and Jesse’s first look at the big time.
Tuco eventually met his end after a shootout against Hank. His death was a shocking and unexpected one that left a vacuum in the criminal world, eventually being replaced by Walt and Jesse but also allowing Gus to maneuver his way into a stronger position.
13 Todd Alquist
Seemed Calm, But Turned Into A Psychopath
Debut Episode:
Hazard Pay(Season 5, Episode 3)
Todd started off as a quiet, interested young man who didn’t seem to pose any threat to Walt and Jesse despite being a pretty capable criminal.
As time went on, Todd increasingly shows psychopathic signs and ended up being responsible, along with his Neo-Nazi family, for the prolonged torture of Jesse. Todd was a scary character for just how off he was and was brilliant in his return in the El Camino movie.
12 Jane Margolis
Formed A Great Relationship With Jesse Before Her Sudden Demise
Debut Episode:
Breakage (Season 2, Episode 5)
Jane is a character that a lot of people hate to love. Sure, he may have given Jesse a taste of happiness, but this came at the cost of a relapse where both of them regularly enabled each other and shot themselves up with heroin.
Regardless, her death was a tragic moment that showed just how unempathetic and dark Walter really was. He did not care about Jane at all, and the dark manner in which he revealed the details of her death to Jesse when he was at his lowest point made him an even more despicable character.
11 Skyler White
Walter White’s Wife
Debut Episode:
Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)
Skyler starts off as a character whom the audience seems to hate before it is made clear that she is yet another victim of Walter and is actually a well-rounded, decent enough person in comparison.
Though her actions weren’t perfect and she did plenty wrong, fans can forgive her for the way she was being when considering everything that Walt and his career as a criminal put her through.
10 The Salamanca Cousins
Two Intimidating Assassins
Debut Episode:
No Más(Season 3, Episode 1)
Vengeance is a dish served flaming hot, and the Salamanca cousins know their recipes right. Walter White and Jessie have been through their share of hardships and many characters that want to cause pain, but none as on the lines of the deadly twins.
Wanting retribution for White’s wrongdoings to their uncle Tuco, Marco and Leonel Salamanca do all it takes to hunt down the family man and his criminal partner. What makes them sheer evil is the way they get things done, ways of things that can haunt a man if left alive.
9 Steve Gomez
Hank’s Trusted Partner
Debut Episode:
Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)
Partner to Hank and undoubtedly his right hand in operations, Steve Gomez is often ignored for his efforts in the storyline. Steve has been instrumental in cracking many leads and is one of the crucial reasons for Hank to get anywhere close to where he had to be.
Hank was the muscle, and Steve was the brain. The partnership was incomplete without one of them. Most of the show showcased the dark underworld, and most characters were either gray or murky with their narratives. Steve was one of the few good guys who made a difference in the show, and it is worth putting him up as one of the badasses.
8 Don Hector
A Powerful Don Who Was Poisoned By Gustavo Fring
Debut Episode:
Grilled (Season 2, Episode 2)
Don Hector makes his first appearance in the second season, and his scenes are something one cannot forget. With Walter and Jessie still new to the business, they are forced into hostage by Tuco. But the tensest moment comes when Tio takes it upon himself to save his nephew.
Paralyzed to the brim and with nothing but a bell to communicate, Theo does everything to make his nephew realize he is in bad company. Although his first appearances do not speak volumes about him, the man does enjoy a badass backstory later down the line, and it would only make sense how the old paralyzed don did what he did.
7 Krazy 8
The Person Who Triggered Walt’s Transformation Into Heisenberg
Debut Episode:
Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)
Krazy 8 might not be the most ruthless gangster or the clever emperor of a vast drug business, but he is the most essential character in the entire series. His inclusion in the list might be open for debate, but it is undeniable that the on-ground distributor was the first step in Walter White really breaking bad.
Dealing with off-ing someone regardless of their morality is a huge ask for anyone who doesn’t have a flair for it, let alone a dying chemist. But it is the episode where Walter White has to let go of any human ethics to really let loose to become the ruthless danger that he evolves into.
6 Gustavo Fring
The Best Villain In The Series
Debut Episode:
Mandala (Season 2, Episode 11)
One of the major villains of the Breaking Bad series, Gus Fring is a brilliant character who is one of the audience’s favorites. Cunning, calculated, and unpredictable – Gus is one of the major players in Alburqueque’s drug scene and employs Walt, Jesse, and Mike.
There are so many great moments for the character over the course of the show with plenty of feuds with other characters. The character returned to Better Call Saul where he made a massive impact also.
5 Jesse Pinkman
Walt’s Trusted Partner Who Slowly Breaks Down Over The Course Of The Series
Debut Episode:
Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)
One of the main characters along with Walt, Jesse Pinkman is an interesting and layered character that goes on to cook meth with his high school chemistry teacher.
More street-smart than Walt, Jesse is often unfairly made to look like a sidekick to Walt. Jesse brings his own strengths to the duo and has many iconic moments across the show.
4 Mike Ehrmantraut
A Stoic Professional
Debut Episode:
ABQ (Season 2, Episode 13)
Mike is one of the best characters across both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, owing to a brilliant, consistent performance by Jonathan Banks as well as brilliant characterization by the writing team.
A bodyguard of Gus’, Mike is on many occasions responsible for dealing with Walt and Jesse and feeding information down to Gus. Over the course of the show, we learn more of his backstory and that he’s a former police officer who’s only a criminal to pay for his granddaughter’s future. This makes his ending all the more tragic in one of Breaking Bad‘s best episodes.
3 Hank Schrader
Walter’s Brother-In-Law And An Exemplary DEA Agent
Debut Episode:
Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)
Everyone’s favorite DEA agent, Hank Schrader is a brilliant character who has some of the best scenes in Breaking Bad. Viewers saw him deal with Tuco, the Twins, and even Walt, Jesse, and the Neo-Nazi gang at one point. There are many who believe Hank should be the next character to get a Breaking Bad spin-off show.
A funny character who’s very larger-than-life, his near-misses discovering Walt provided a lot of drama throughout the seasons and eventually culminated in a big way.
2 Saul Goodman
A Lawyer With A Mysterious Backstory Explained In Better Call Saul
Debut Episode:
Better Call Saul(Season 2, Episode 8)
An electric character that was so good he was given his own spin-off, Saul Goodman is one of the best characters in Breaking Bad. The criminal lawyer of both Walt and Jesse, right from his entrance the character steals nearly every scene he’s in and turns out to be an important part of Heisenberg’s operation.
Saul is a character with so much more to give even by the end of Breaking Bad. Even with so much mystery shrouding his past and why he is the way he is compared to other characters on the show, he still proves to be one of its best. There are plenty of Better Call Saul moments that add extra context to Breaking Badwhile also providing fans with more screen time with Jimmy.
1 Walter White
A Physics Teacher Who Develops Cancer And Decides To Walk Down A Dark Path
Debut Episode:
Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)
Walter is perhaps one of the best characters in any TV show, not solely Breaking Bad. An ordinary yet repressed family man who faces cancer and the end of his life turns into one of America’s most notorious criminals of all time.
As the show progresses, viewers learn more and more about Walt’s background, helping to make him more understandable. By the end of the show, Walt has alienated everybody against him and dies despite beating the cancer that sets his personality shift off in the first place.
