Classroom of the Elite is one of those “quiet hits”, a series with a solid fanbase but that might get overshadowed by other anime with more vocal fans. The anime series is based on the same name light novel series, which has been published since 2015.
It is divided into three segments: Classroom of the Elite Year 1 (11 volumes + 3 extra volumes + Volume 0), Classroom of the Elite Year 2 (12 volumes + 3 extra volumes) and Classroom of the Elite Year 3 (the first volume is set to release on March 24).

Season 4 Is Confirmed, But That’s About It
Last year, Classroom of the Elite Season 3 aired in Japan and internationally (it’s on Crunchyroll). After it finished broadcasting, the fourth season was announced – however, no release window has been revealed yet. Some fans might be too excited to know what’s next, but may also be unsure about where to start reading the series.
No problem! Here you can learn where to start reading the series if you want to pick up either the original novel or the manga adaptations.
Where To Pick Up The Novel?
Close
Before diving further into where to start the series, it’s important to note that the best way to start reading the series is the obvious one – from Volume 1. No matter how well the novel is adapted, there are always differences between the original material and the adaptations, as is natural to happen when any story is transposed from one medium to another.
That said, for those who want to start from where the anime left off, Seasons 1 to 3 cover all the events in Classroom of the Elite Year 1. This means that those who watched all the seasons must start from Year 2. But what about those who have not watched all the seasons and decided to go straight to the original source? Here’s a quick guide then, then:
- After Season 1: Year 1 Volume 5 (the season covers up to Volume 4.5)
- After Season 2: Year Volume 8 (the season covers up to Volume 7.5)
- After Season 3: Year 2 Volume 1 (the season covers up to Volume 11.5)
Seven Seas licenses the novel in English. So far, it has published up to Year 2 Volume 10.
Where To Pick Up The Manga?
For those who want to read the manga adaptation… that’s a bit more complicated. The manga by Yuyu Ichino is behind the anime series – it covers the events of Year 1. 12 volumes have been released, but they adapt only up to the events of Volume 5, so the events from Season 2 on are still being adapted.
Those who have finished watching the three seasons can pick up from Classroom of the Elite Year 2 manga by Shia Sasane, but it’s only available in Japanese (officially). Five volumes have been published, covering events in Year 2 Volume 1.
The Year 2 manga is now completed, but a new manga has been announced, titled Year 2 – 2nd Stage, probably covering events from Volume 2 on. Komada Hachi is in charge of this adaptation.
Seven Season licenses Classroom of the Elite (Year 1). So far, it has published up to Volume 12.
Should I Read The Novel Or The Manga?
As fans strongly criticize the manga adaptations, the best option is to read the original novel series. However, if you’re not into reading light novels but really want to read the Classroom of the Elite manga with the upcoming events, another option would be waiting for the fourth season (or reading Year 2 Volume 1) and then wait for Year 2 – 2nd Stage, hoping fans will like this one more than the other adaptations.
