- The ending of Season 1 sets up an intriguing possibility for a Season 2, with the team ready for new missions.
The first show of James Gunn’s DCU has now completed its first season. Creature Commandos spent its entire first season introducing the characters and “monsters” that make up the Creature Commandos team. The group was sent by Amanda Waller to save the life of a princess and then ran into some serious adventures.
Creature Commandos is especially important because this is a kind of rebrand for the DC Cinematic Universe under Gunn. Not only was it a way to try and wipe away the bad taste of the DCEU’s finish but it was also a way for Gunn to officially start his version of the DCU off on the right foot. And it’s safe to say he did that based on the reviews of Creature Commandos and how the show has reportedly gained viewers every week. Now that first season is over and its time to look at and think about everything that happened.

What happened in Creature Commandos season 2?
The Creature Commandos were put together by Amanda Waller in a similar way to how she built The Suicide Squad in previous iterations of the DC Cinematic Universe. This group is a bunch of monsters that were housed at Belle Reve, though in the case of Dr. Nina Mazusky, she wasn’t there because she committed a crime, it appears she was just there because she looked different.
Waller enlisted Rick Flag Sr. whose son was killed in an operation of The Suicide Squad in the movie by the same name. Like his son, Flagg Sr.’s job was to try and wrangle this group of misfits (Dr. Phosphorus, The Bride, Mazursky, Weasel and G.I. Robot) into a team that can handle a mission of protecting the ruler of Pokolistan, Princess Ilana.

The mission begins because there are reports that Ilana is going to be attacked by a group of terrorists led by Circe who hails from the same island nation as Wonder Woman. Eventually, the Creature Commandos find out exactly why they are attacking as Circe shows them a vision of Ilana working with Gorilla Grodd and other super bads to take over the world. They’ve managed to kill most of the Justice League in the process.
At one point, Flagg discovers that the vision appears to be false, somehow implanted in the goddess by a cabal that includes Clayface, who was posing as a professor who lent credence to the idea that the vision was real. Flagg and Frankenstein’s monster go to the professor’s house and do battle with Clayface, eventually winning but leaving Flagg in bad enough shape that he’s unconscious and eventually has to be hospitalized. While he is recovering, he’s also desperate to get a message to his team that the vision was false, because they’ve been dispatched by Waller and company to kill Ilana themselves now that they’ve been told about the world-ending vision. That leaves Weasel, Nina Mazursky, Dr. Phosporus and The Bride essentially going to take out the person they were originally allied with.
How Does Creature Commandos Season 1 End
Close
Weasel, Dr. Phosphorus, The Bride and Nina Mazusky have reached the castle compound where they are bound and determined to kill the princess. Their voyage to that point is interspersed with the story of how Nina became the way that she was, similar to how Creature Commandos has shown the backstory of all of the “monsters” on the team. Like Weasel, she’s misunderstood and is a good person, but humanity is just a little too ugly and evil for her to be left alone.
Like Weasel, she’s misunderstood and is a good person, but humanity is just a little too ugly and evil for her to be left alone.
The Bride and Phosphorus convince Nina that the best way to kill Ilana is for Nina to kill her when she’s in the water, so they wait until she’s about to go swimming. This goes back to the first episode where Waller told Flagg that Nina was a “killer” in the water. As it turned out, Nina was in fact, still not a killer in the water and after hesitantly going after Illana, with a knife, the princess gets the better of her and kills Nina instead. Right about this time, the team gets the message that they’ve been called off and that Circe’s vision was somehow faked.
However, as they are getting ready to leave and head back to Belle Reve, The Bride puts two and two together and realizes that she was working with Clayface. While it’s still not a given that the vision was true and that she’ll eventually take over the world, it is clear that the Princess is not a good person. Because of this, the Bride goes into Illana’s chambers and kills her just because Ilana can kill her instead. They then walk out of the castle before anyone notices that the princess is dead.
Does the ending of Season 1 pave the way for Season 2?
Yes there is a very obvious and easy lead-in to a Creature Commandos Season 2. The entire crew, other than Nina is back and Belle Reve and looks like it’s ready to go. They’ve even managed to make a new G.I. Robot, though this one is bigger and more powerful than the one that was killed by Circe in an earlier episode. It’s clear that should James Gunn want to keep this show going, it’s set up.
