Mentorship plays a massive role in the overall story of Dragon Ball, so much so that some of the main characters would be nowhere if they had not undergone sufficient training under the hands of Martial Arts masters. Goku, who is largely considered to be the strongest mortal in the entire multiverse, would not have even made it past the Saiyan Saga if it had not been for his many powerful and skillful teachers who were at the top of their respective crafts.
Gohan is no exception to this rule since he owes his legendary strength to the two mentors he has had over the course of Dragon Ball. However, this has prompted the fandom to debate which one of Gohan’s teachers was the better one and whose finishing attack would better suit him. So, let’s go over both Goku and Piccolo’s mentorship roles in relation to Gohan and see whose finishing move would be a better one for Gohan to use.

Goku and Gohan have trained quite extensively throughout the series, most apparent of which was the time they spent together before the start of the Cell Games. More than just this, though, is the fact that Goku is Gohan’s father and, subsequently, his inspiration to get stronger and become a better man, so this can also be symbolically shown with Gohan inheriting his father’s iconic technique.
It’ll take you 50 years to learn the Kamehameha wave!
Moreover, Gohan has shown the Kamehameha as his main Ki attack multiple times in the series, chief of which was when he used it to defeat Perfect Cell. This has also cemented the Kamehameha as his most iconic attack, making him the person to have used this move the most after Goku himself. While Goku may not have trained Gohan the same or as much as Piccolo has, the Kamehameha serves as a perfect option for Gohan’s most powerful move.

When it comes to the debate of who Gohan’s greatest mentor is, the answer goes to Piccolo for most fans. While the initial part of the training he put Gohan through was violent and incredibly dangerous, the two eventually bonded and formed somewhat of a father-son relationship which remains one of Dragon Ball’s greatest friendships. By this metric alone, the case for Gohan using the Special Beam Cannon as his strongest move is quite a strong one.
If that had hit me head on, it would have taken me out!
More than this, Gohan’s first finishing move was the Masenko Ki attack, which was also created by Piccolo, so to make the Special Beam Cannon his strongest move for the current iterations of his character is truly in line with this trend of attacks. The entire conversation of Gohan’s finishing move comes to a head with his strongest form, the Beast transformation, seemingly using the Special Beam Cannon as his strongest technique to defeat the threat of the terrifying Cell Max.

The third option here is for Gohan to have an entirely unique finishing technique that can have elements or inspirations from both of his past mentors. While he is undoubtedly a character shaped by his loved ones in terms of personality, Gohan is unique as a fighter due to his insane potential, which allows him to close the gap of power between him and the strongest mortals in the universe with a fraction of the effort. By taking his strengths into consideration with the fighter he has shaped up to be through the mentorship given to him by Goku and Piccolo, it would make a lot of sense for Gohan’s new final move to be his own creation, just as Beast Gohan was.
My goal is an ultimate form that no one has ever seen before!
There is a separate debate to be had about whether Goku or Piccolo is the better mentor for Gohan. While both of their signature moves, the Kamehameha and Special Beam Cannon respectively, would make perfect thematic sense for Gohan to adopt as his new finishing move, the option for the young Saiyan to explore his own powers to make his own technique is possibly the best option of them all.
