Dragon Ball is one of the best action fantasy series ever created. From Gods and aliens to talking cats and wise dragons to killer androids and time travelers, this legendary series has everything. But while the characters are certainly interesting, the one aspect of Dragon Ball that is rarely appreciated or even talked about is the places.

From heaven and hell to various planets within the multiple universes, there are so many fascinating places scattered throughout Dragon Ball. The one that we’ll talk about in this article, however, is not as majestic as those places. It’s a bit more understated despite its big contribution to the story as a whole. From its location to how it works to its roles in the story, this is all you need to know about the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in Dragon Ball.

The Hyperbolic Time Chamber is a secret place that only a handful of people in the universe know about. But before we talk about this fascinating place, we need to mention the place that housed this chamber first, the God’s Temple.

The God’s Temple

The God’s Temple, also known as the Kami Temple or The Lookout, is a temple that floats freely in the sky. It is located miles above the Korin’s Tower, the home of the famed Cat Hermit and the iconic Senzu beans.

As the name suggests, the God’s Temple is where the God of the Earth, also known as Kami, resides and looks over everything that is happening on Earth. He is also the one who creates and maintains the Dragon Balls of the Earth. Currently, the one who sits in that position is a boy from Planet Namek named Dende.

The God’s Temple is a fairly massive structure. There’s no official mention of its dimensions or size, but based on what we’ve seen in the anime and the manga, it is safe to assume that it is several football fields wide and several stories deep.

There’s only a single building atop the God’s Temple. Once inside, you’ll find stairs that will lead you down to different floors and different rooms within this massive temple. One of those rooms is The Hyperbolic Time Chamber, also known as the Chamber of Spirit and Time.

When you open the door to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, you’ll find yourself in a structure that looks similar to the one at the top of the temple, but smaller. It has sleeping quarters, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a year’s worth of food supply for two people.

How the Hyperbolic Time Chamber Works

Now that we know where the Chamber is located and what it looks like, it’s time to talk about how the Hyperbolic Time Chamber actually works.

Different Dimension

Dragon Ball Z Goten and Trunks in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber

From the outside, the chamber looks pretty unassuming, just like any other room in the temple. But once you step inside, you are instantly teleported to another dimension, one that is completely separated from the real world.

In this dimension, the only thing that exists is the small structure mentioned earlier. Other than that, it is basically a white void. There’s nothing on the ground and nothing in the sky. It looks like a white space that extends to infinity. This blank space means you can unleash your strongest attacks without having to worry about anything.

Heavier Gravity

Another interesting feature of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber is its high gravity level. You won’t feel a thing if you’re still inside the living quarters. The moment you step outside the building, however, you will be instantly hit with gravity that is 10 times higher than Earth.

This means that even standing still is a challenge. That’s why little Gohan immediately collapsed to the ground the first time he entered the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with Goku. That being said, this heavy gravity is actually one of the reasons why this chamber is the perfect training ground. After all, just walking around is bound to build your muscles.

Time Dilation

Other than the emptiness and the heavier gravity, what makes the Hyperbolic Time Chamber the perfect training ground is its time dilation. Time moves differently while you’re inside the chamber. To be more specific, 1 day on Earth is equal to 1 year inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. This means 1 hour outside is equal to about 15 days inside.

This time dilation effect makes the Hyperbolic Time Chamber the most efficient place to train or even learn any skills. Think about how much progress you can make in a year, and then you get out of the chamber, and it’s only been a day in the real world. That is such an amazing proposition. One thing worth noting, however, is the fact that while inside, your body follows the time of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. This means even if you only go away for a day to the people outside, you have actually become one year older.

Time Limit

While it’s true that all of those features mentioned above make the Hyperbolic Time Chamber the best place to train your mind and body, there is still a big caveat to this magical place. You can only stay inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for a total of 2 years, which is equal to 2 days on Earth. Once those 2 years are up, you can no longer enter the chamber.

However, once Dende took over as the owner of the God’s Temple, he modified the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Nowadays, you can stay inside for as long as you want. That being said, the fact remains that you get older way faster inside. So it is still inadvisable to stay within the chamber for too long.

The Roles of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in the Story

Dragon Ball Z Trunks Goten Piccolo Buu Hyperbolic Time Chamber

The Hyperbolic Time Chamber has been featured several times throughout the story of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. More often than not, it is simply a convenient training ground for the characters. But there’s also a time when it holds a crucial role in the story.

The Saiyan’s Training Place

Technically speaking, everybody can enter the Hyperbolic Time Chamber as long as they receive permission from Dende. However, the ones who often use this magical place are the Saiyan fighters.

Goku is the first known person who uses the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, specifically in preparation for his fight against Piccolo in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. Years later, Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Future Trunks use the chamber during the Cell story arc. Years after that, Goku and Piccolo decided to let Goten and Trunks use the chamber to train their fusion formation, in preparation for their fight against Majin Buu.

“There’s an odd room here where you can spend an entire year in the span of one outside day. Dan and I were training in there”

A Prison for Buu

The Hyperbolic Time Chamber holds a much more important role during the Buu story arc. By the time Buu arrived at God’s Temple, he had already annihilated approximately a third of the Earth’s population. The next thing on the list was to fight against the strongest fighter that humanity had to offer, which was Gotenks—the fusion version of Goten and Trunks.

In his effort to stall for time, Piccolo led Buu into the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where he eventually fought Gotenks. Gotenks fought like a champion, but midway through the fight, it became clear to Piccolo that they couldn’t win against Buu. So, he did the only thing that he thought could save the rest of the Earth. Piccolo destroyed the only door that connects the Chamber’s dimension with the real world, thus imprisoning everybody present in the white void of the Hyperbolic Chamber.

Unfortunately for Piccolo, Buu accidentally ripped open a hole that bends space and time, which temporarily connected the Earth to the white void. Before the dimensional hole closed for good, Buu escaped from his prison, leaving Piccolo and Gotenks in the white void.

As mentioned earlier, the world of Dragon Ball is full of fascinating places that are often ignored and forgotten simply because we are too focused on the characters and the fight scenes. So be sure to look back into this legendary series and find these hidden gems.
