Warning: The following contains spoilers for Edens Zero Season 2, Episode 21, “The Doomsday System,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Edens Zero has lately been keen on revealing the pasts of its troubled characters, with Kleene’s traumatic past being the latest to be unraveled. Despite being one of Drakken Joe’s henchmen, Kleene had assimilated into the Edens Zero crew and had taken a liking to a few on board, with Rebecca and Homura reciprocating the sentiments. While Kleene had been redeemed to some extent, her unique, incurable illness still remained a pressing issue as even Sister Ivry failed to cure her.
It had already been made clear by Jinn’s remarks that some sort of past trauma was keeping Kleene from fully recovering, a statement that has now been proven by the series with the rattling revelation of her trauma. Dr. Muller seems to be at the center of this traumatic predicament once more, continuing his streak of depravity and wickedness among Edens Zero’s villainous landscape.
The Rutherford Family’s Demise
Kleene’s trauma is rooted around the same time Hermit was tormented by Dr. Muller, making their pasts somewhat similar. However, the intensity of Muller’s cruelty against the Rutherford family is above any crime he has committed before. The Rutherford family was one of the main patrons funding the Muller Royal Laboratories on Planet Newton, yet they were entirely unaware of the type of research that went on within the confines of the lab.
Once the Rutherford family found out about the heinous nature of Muller’s research and experiments after his arrest, they ceased funding to the Muller Royal Laboratories, a move that infuriated Muller. He was eventually imprisoned by the Interstellar Union Army, yet even the Cosmic Government failed to control his tenacious nature as he was able to successfully escape prison, albeit at the cost of his entire human body.
After escaping prison and becoming an O-Tech, Muller’s first goal was to exact revenge on those behind his downfall, making the Rutherford family the target of his psychopathic rage. He paid the Rutherford family a visit, and killed the parents in cold blood, and then kidnapped their two children, Jinn and Kleene to use as guinea pigs for his experiments.
Experiments on Kleene and Jinn
Under Muller’s captivity, Jinn and Kleene were used as subjects for unethical research, though the primary purpose was to torture the kids as revenge for the Rutherfords’ betrayal. Muller tied up Jinn against a plank and tortured him, all while making his little sister witness the horrific sight. He chopped up Jinn’s limbs one by one as Kleene watched in horror, leaving the boy without any arms and legs.
The sight of watching someone’s limbs being gruesomely torn apart with a chainsaw is bound to leave anyone mentally incapacitated. Kleene was merely a child when she was forced to watch her brother undergo this depraved experiment, rendering her mental state entirely maimed. The purpose of Muller’s experiment was to examine how long it would take before a person’s mental capabilities are shattered by witnessing a traumatic sight.
In this case, Muller was successful in breaking Kleene as she could no longer feel emotions after witnessing the petrifying event. This led to her developing a unique disorder that would cause her to entirely break down whenever she experienced a surge of overwhelming emotions.
Kleene’s Current State
While Kleene’s mind eventually suppressed these traumatic memories, the event’s horror still remained intact in her subconscious, making her prone to breaking down at every instance of feeling emotions. Even the likes of Sister Ivry couldn’t heal her unique illness, leaving her in an incurable state. However, the return of Dr. Muller forced Kleene to shut down after experiencing a surge of negative emotions, forcing Sister to take action.
In a bid to save Kleene from succumbing to her past, Sister digitized her memories and went into her mind to the time she witnessed the horrific event. Since it was during the same time Hermit was freed from Muller’s clutches, Sister was able to pinpoint the event to exactly ten years from the present set time. In Kleene’s mind, Sister Ivry witnessed the gruesome event with her own eyes, leaving her in a state of shock as well.
Soon after, Sistery Ivry took Kleene in her embrace and erased her memories of the experiments, in-turn curing her novel illness of being unable to experience emotions. Edens Zero implies that Kleene has now been healed as she begins to shed tears despite being unconscious, indicating that she now has the ability to experience emotions without breaking down. Since Sister erased Kleene’s memories to free her from the ghosts of her past, it’s likely that she may have to confront her trauma down the line. For now, Kleene has recovered from her debilitating illness, allowing her to move on towards a better future.
