Warning: The following contains spoilers for Edens Zero Season 2, Episode 19, “Darling Little Piece of Junk,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The Battle of Foresta may be over, but the turmoil on the Verdant Planet lingers on. After successfully defeating Poseidon Nero’s Beast Squad, the Edens Zero crew seemed to be off the hook. However, matters have taken a turn for the worse once more as a few other belligerents have joined Foresta’s already-volatile landscape.

Not everyone is pleased with these developments as a few ghosts from the past have come back to haunt the crew, rekindling traumatic memories that had long been buried. With the return of Dr. Muller, the fighting is no longer physical as the Verdant Planet has become a battleground of wits, and only those who can fight off their inner demons shall leave unscathed. For now, the odds seem to be stacked against the Edens Zero crew, though a few allies within Foresta may change this narrative.

A Ghost From the Past

Dr. Muller Beats Hermit

The virus corrupting Foresta is one of the crew’s main predicaments, and disabling it is necessary since it will eventually corrupt the Four Shining Stars. Hermet initially predicted that Ziggy is the mastermind behind the virus, since he was the creator of the Shining Stars and several other robotic feats. However, Hermit and Weisz find an entirely different character aboard the satellite propagating the virus to the planet.

The brains behind the virus is revealed to be Dr. Muller, a scientist from planet Newton who was detained by the Cosmic Government. Muller is much more than just an intergalactic convict as his history with Hermit taints him as a character beyond evil. His crimes against robot-kind are truly heinous and unforgivable, as he was solely responsible for destroying an entire planet teeming with bots, along with torturing Hermit for years on end.

Muller has now returned as an O-Tech, a term used for human beings that have undergone cybernetic modifications. According to Muller, he escaped prison by concocting a massive explosion, though he lost his own body in the process. Now, he runs amuck as a cybernetic human and works for Ziggy and his goal of human subjugation. Muller also mentions that Ziggy promised him that he would get to meet Hermit once more, meaning he has more plans with experimentation and torture for the Shining Star.

Hermit’s Reenacted Trauma

Hermit's Trauma

Hermit’s pain and suffering at the hands of Muller was gut-wrenching and traumatic, even forcing her to despise humans from the core of her robotic heart. Hermit was forced to live with the guilt of knowing her research played a role in the destruction of Planet Hook, along with the years of torture and mortification from Muller and his subordinates.

However, Hermit eventually left her traumatic past behind and finally rekindled a sense of happiness, but Muller’s return now threatens her newfound sanity. Just the sight of Muller had Hermit in a trance-like state, unable to make sense of the events unraveling in front of her. Considering the years of experiments and belittlement Hermit had to suffer in captivity, her response to the entire situation makes perfect sense.

Muller takes out Wiesz rather easily, and detains the already-incapacitated Shining Star with ease. For the two to escape the predicament alive, Hermit must face her fears and the pain inflicted upon her, as that is the only way for her to break free from Muller’s clutches. Sister Ivry mentions that Hermit’s mental state has suddenly deteriorated, meaning matters are only about to become worse unless she gets a hold of her own wits.

Kleene’s Unraveling Past

Kleene Under Distress

Kleene is one of Edens Zero’s first villain-turned-hero characters, though her characterization and backstory is yet to be properly explored. However, the events of the current episode hint towards Kleene’s possible past and the source of her trauma. The series has revealed that Kleene has a rare illness that has taken away her emotions, and every instance of overwhelming emotions results in a mental breakdown. Moreover, Jinn mentions that if Kleene were to remember her past, even the emotion suppressant won’t be able to tame her sanity.

In the current episode, Kleene’s mental state also begins to deteriorate, though she only mentions the presence of someone bad nearby. Since Dr. Muller is the only antagonist nearby, it could only mean that Kleene was referring to him. However, this suggests that she also bears a link to Muller, and considering his insane antics, it’s likely that Kleene was experimented upon by the mad scientist as well.

This would also explain her rare and incurable disease, and why she can’t remember her past. Sister’s inability in curing the disease further makes Muller being the culprit more plausible, since curing a human-induced disorder is more likely to be out of Sister Ivry’s scope of healing. While these are mere speculations, the events of this episode heavily point towards these theories.
