One Piece Day 2023 was held at Tokyo Big Site in Tokyo, Japan on July 21st and 22nd, 2023. Despite the misleading name, it was a two-day event that showcased all things One Piece. There was a lot of celebrate, with fans getting together to share in their love for one of the most famous anime of all time, and some great announcements came out of the event, too.
The event opened on Day One with a screening of the box office smash-hit film One Piece Red, which came out last year. Because everyone in the audience had already seen it, they were encouraged to cheer throughout the showing. Plus, the voice actress behind the character Uta, Kaori Nazuka, and Tony Tony Chopper were there to hype up the excited crowd even more! That was the main event for the first day of the festival.
A huge part of the second day of One Piece Day focused on the upcoming Netflix live-action series. There was a whole area of the venue set up to display the costumes from the show, and a few props, too. The latest trailer for the series was also revealed live, and it was introduced by Mayumi Tanaka (Monkey D. Luffy), Kazuya Nakai (Roronoa Zoro), Akemi Okamura (Nami), Kappei Yamaguchi (Usopp), and Hiroaki Hirata (Sanji), the voices from the anime.
After the trailer was revealed, the voice actors and production crew shared some behind-the-scenes stories from the Land of Wano Arc in the One Piece anime, and they got a sneak-peak of August 6th’s upcoming new episode. This episode will feature Gear 5 for the first time, and this trailer was fan’s first look. Next, a lot of new One Piece merchandise was announced, including some for Gear 5. Most of it will be available in Japan only, through UFO catcher games and convenience store lotteries.
Then, there was a surprise performance and announcement from singer Maki Otsuki. She performed the ending themes “Memories” and “Run! Run! Run!” for the One Piece anime, and she performed them live for all the fans! She also revealed that from August 6th One Piece will have an ending theme again for the first time since 2006. It will be performed by the group Chili Beans. Additionally, a new opening song will also be revealed on August 6th, by the extremely popular group Sekai no Owari!
Something really special about One Piece Day was that it was live-streamed on YouTube – with English subtitles! This is just one way that the otaku world is becoming more easily accessible for international audiences as the viewership of anime continues to grow in around the world. If you were not one of the two million One Piece fans who tuned in to watch the event live, luckily you can still watch the livestreams here – Day One and Day Two. These links will be active until October 21st, 2023.
