Gray Fullbuster and Juvia Lockster first meet as enemies during the Phantom Lord arc, during which the guild declares war on Fairy Tail by demolishing and injuring its members. During the arc, Juvia, one of the Elemental Four, is tasked to kidnap Lucy after successfully capturing Lucy and bringing her back to their guild. After learning what happened to Lucy, who stayed with the injured Fairy Tail members, the remainder of the guild swore to bring her back and get payback on the Phantom Lord guild for hurting their nakama.
Once at the guild, Juvia intercepts Gray, who wonders why it is raining. With this, Juvia replies with her usual spiel, “Juvia is a woman of the rain.” With this, Gray replies that he won’t go easy on with an intimidating face, thus making Juvia blush and attempt defeat before the battle begins. At this, Juvia experiences love at first sight for Gray, as she is “somehow afflicted” by his words and becomes determined to make him hers.
As the battle continues, Juvia misunderstands several situations. Juvia’s misunderstanding likely stems from her childhood, as she was often mistreated by the neighborhood kids and her romantic partners because it constantly rained around her. As Juvia is a Water mage, she was likely unable to control her powers, causing it to rain due to her emotions and the sad events that would happen to her. Before Juvia could stop making it rain, her feelings had been in tune with it, causing immediate downpours.

- At Gray’s declaration to save Lucy, Lucy unwillingly becomes Juvia’s love rival and friend.
During Gray and Juvia’s battle, Juvia internally says she doesn’t need love, indicating that she has been searching her whole life for someone who will accept her for who she is and not discriminate against her because of the rain that always follows. In the battle, Gray accidentally grabs Juvia’s bosom while cooling down the boiling water; this once again causes Juvia to misunderstand Gray’s intentions.
He released me from the ice?! He’s so kind!!
After feeling hurt by Gray’s comments about the rain, Juvia launches an all-out attack, which Gray quickly stops. As Juvia was an S-Class mage and likely never have been defeated before, Jvuia was shocked that she lost to Gray. Although Gray earnestly fought Juvia, true to his word of not holding back against women and children, he still cared about her wellbeing after the battle as he saved her from falling off the roof.
After the battle, the rain that had constantly stayed with Juvia finally ceased, revealing the clear sky. She could see Gray’s silhouette bathed in sunlight for the first time as he asked if she wished to continue fighting. This moment likely marked the instant Juvia fell deeply in love with Gray, leaving him bewildered following the battle.

After their first meeting, Juvia stalks Gray wherever he goes and, at one point, saves him by hiding Gray in her water body during the Tower of Heaven arc. However, Makarov formally welcomes her to the Fairy Tail guild after her contributions to the battle. Although Juvia often expresses her love to Gray and affectionately calls him “Gray-sama,” much to his displeasure, Gray does care for her.
Throughout the series, Gray is often aloof to Juvia’s advances; however, as a member of Fairy Tail, he begins to care for her and, at one point, sacrifices his life for her. These two actions are contradictory as they suggest Gray cares more for Juvia than he lets on; however, he does not want to admit his feelings for the Water mage.
After the introduction of Lyon Vastia, Gray’s feelings begin to show, as the two were long-time rivals studying under the same master. Although Gray remained aloof with his feelings for Juvia throughout the series, the introduction of Lyon forced Gray to act fiercely protective of Juvia. However, he played it out as not wanting Lyon to be around the guild. Like Juvia, Lyon also actively made his feelings known to Juvia, thus, in Juvia’s words, creating a “love triangle” between the three. While Juvia’s love for Gray remained strong, she wasn’t opposed to the idea, as it might bring Juvia and Gray closer together.

As Juvia’s feelings grew, she followed Gray wherever he went. At one point, the two also lived together after Fairy Tails disbandment. They would train, eat, and work together here, although Juvia admits Gray has tried to kick her out. Several times within the series, the two mages teamed up to defeat their enemies, as their magic, water, and ice make for the perfect combination. With this also comes times of defeat and sacrifice, to which Gray and Juvia have done so for each other time and time again. However, upon witnessing Juvia sacrifice herself for him by donating her blood through a blood transfusion technique, Gray promises to take her feelings for him more seriously.
However, what solidifies Gray’s feelings for Juvia is the events during the Fairy Tail 100 Year’s Quest arcs. At the beginning of the Wood Dragon arc, Gray meets Lady Juvina, a doppelganger working at Fairy Nail, a celebrity guild. Lady Juvina directly confronts Gray about his feelings for Juvia, although Gray does not outwardly want to admit them. After listening to the similar experiences that Lady Juvina has been dealing with, Gray realizes how he has been mistreating Juvia and declares he’ll become a worthy man who can protect her before asking her to be his.
Juvia means a lot to me. But I’m no good to her the way I am right now… I want to be a man that can protect her. Then I’ll make her mine.
During the Moon Dragon arc, Gray also learns Edolas Gray and Juvia have a son called Greige, to which he becomes protective and gets in a small quarrel with Natsu when he witnesses Greige staring at Nasha, Edolas Lucy and Natsu’s daughter. However, it is during the battle with Hakune that Gray enters an illusionary world of himself and Juvia being together with their own son, Greige, along with many of Gray’s loved ones, that Gray fully admits that he wants to make Juvia happy.

Although Gray rejects this illusionary world, he strives to make better choices to make it a reality. When Gray returns from Edolas, the guild members note how differently Gray now acts with Juvia, no longer rejecting her advances but actively caring for her and her condition after being away. To further emphasize this, in the Sabertooth library in Chapter 125 of Fairy Tail 100 Years Quest, Gray searches the archive on “How to treat a woman,” “Rain woman,” and “Being hit on.” All of these suggest Gray’s previous aloof and cold demeanor is no longer present, and Gray’s activity seeks to make Juvia happy.
