- Despite the setbacks and controversies, the Game of Thrones franchise flourishes with multiple spin-offs like House of the Dragon.
HBO’s Game of Thrones may have ended almost six years ago, but its incredible cast and storylines still captivate fantasy fans to this day. Even though there are spin-offs from George R.R. Martin’s mythical world, fans can’t help but want to relive the magic that made the show so great to begin with. Delivering such a rich and complex lore is no easy feat, but when a literary master like Martin is at the helm, it’s no surprise that Game of Thrones became such a successful television series, especially with the likes of Peter Dinklage as Tyrian, Lena Headey as Cersei, and Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen steering the ship that most fans couldn’t imagine anyone else playing these iconic characters.
Based on Martin’s novels in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, HBO’s adaptation initially received a ton of praise, growing a dedicated and loyal fanbase that only seemed to increase as each episode rolled around. However, it’s fair to assume that some fans didn’t overly enjoy the final season of Game of Thrones, with a lot of criticism aimed at its excessive sexual violence and hurried storylines. Even Charles Dance’s Tywin Lannister had a few things to say about it, stating how disappointed he also felt about its finale. However, despite the controversy, Game of Thrones‘ characters had some of the best performances on TV, even if a few of them did get a surprising recast.

Game of Thrones Fan Discovers The Mountain Changed Actors 3 Times
Over on the Game of Thrones Reddit page, one fan of the HBO fantasy series has revealed that only on their fifth rewatch of the show, they discovered that the character of Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane had been recast not once, but three times throughout its seasons. To highlight this surprising and interesting fact, user Neuralink inserted an image showcasing the three actors side by side. Before Game of Thrones finally set its sights on actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson to play the role of The Mountain, the character was played by Conan Stevens in the show’s first season, and Ian Whyte in the second season of the show.
The reason for the character recasts is fairly simple. Australian wrestler-turned-actor Conan Stevens cut his role short due to a schedule conflict, which saw the beefy star jump into the role of Bolg in The Hobbit, while Ian Whyte struggled to embody himself into the character fully due to The Mountain’s savage and violent ways. The Mountain, whose brother was Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, offered up some of Game of Thrones‘ most violent scenes, where viewers witnessed him doing despicable acts like crushing Oberyn’s head with his bare hands.

Thankfully, fans of the hit show can explore more of Westeros that had remained untouched on the small screen. House of the Dragon is rumored to finally start filming in the next couple of months, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms scheduled for a 2025 debut. With so many spin-offs, the franchise is showing no signs of slowing down.
