There are two sides to the story of War of Kin and HBO tells the Blacks and the Greens’ respective versions through dueling House of the Dragon trailers, dubbed as the “Official Black Trailer” and “Official Green Trailer.” Right off the bat, the Black Trailer shows the central character – Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s absolute vulnerability, after unjustly losing her son, Prince Lucerys Velaryon in the midair chase above Shipbreaker Bay. The Black Queen holds court at Dragonstone, which is where Vermithor, Silverwing, the Cannibal, Sheepstealer, and Grey Ghost dwell.
The Official Black Trailer gives a 1.57-minute-long preview of the brewing chaos in the realm, in which the mother figures, Queen Rhaenyra and the Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower each accept the situation as is. First things first, the Black Queen will get at the Greens with naked military aggression on June 16 in House of the Dragon – season 2.

Prince Lucerys Velaryon’s Funeral
The Official Black trailer begins with Rhaenyra standing beside Jacaerys, Joffrey Velaryon, and a few other grieving family members to pay last respects to Lucerys. Lady Rhaena and Baela, Lord Corlys Velaryon, and Princess Rhaenys pay last respects to the dead Prince. This directly sets up the Blood and Cheese plot, in which Daemon Targaryen promises to avenge his stepson’s death through the principle of “An eye for an eye” or, as House of the Dragon puts it:
An eye for an eye, a son for a son. Lucerys’ shall be avenged.
Rhaenyra expresses shock and anguish at the Green Coup. She stresses that her father chose her to rule over the Seven Kingdoms (really Six Kingdoms as Dorne remains out of the fold, still):
He held his decision until death.
House of the Dragon was expected to incorporate the Blood and Cheese plot early on, “A Son for a Son” is the confirmed title of the first episode of House of the Dragon – season 2. It debuts on June 16, 2024, and is written by Ryan Condal and directed by Alan Taylor.
All Must Choose
Both Sides Get Representation
Though every war is different, there exists a common denominator between different forms of warfare. Wars are prolonged military conflicts, characterized by extreme violence and bloodshed. The upcoming war of kin in House of the Dragon -season 2 is unlike any other.
The civil war, first and foremost, is between a brother and a sister, and not Stark and Lannister, or Targaryen and Lannister. The war of kin features both conventional and unconventional elements, in that, it will be conducted using conventional (medieval) weaponry such as swords, crossbows, spears, and some such, and will employ traditional battlefield tactics. The kin-strife also features a naval battle in the Gullet, and most of all, quasi-military and covert operations such as the Battle of the Cargyll twins, and the Blood and Cheese plot. The Greens make use of wartime propaganda by stressing Aegon’s birthright as Viserys’ firstborn son, and the paternity of Rhaenyra’s children. Since Alicent was the last person attending Viserys, she continually asserts that the dying king chose Prince Aegon to rule.
And finally, to adapt this medieval fantasy story for the modern-day media, House of the Dragon – season 2 dueling trailers ask the viewers to choose between Team Green and Team Black, via:
Dragon Deterrence Is A Myth
The Dance of the Dragons is a testament to the fact that dragon deterrence has its limits, more specifically at the higher spectrum of the conflict when both parties have dragons. For the first time since the Greens’ coup at King’s Landing, Rhaenyra sees eye to eye with the King Consort, Daemon Targaryen. She is eager to deploy her beasts in war. She declares:
I mean to fight this war and win it.
In the Official Black Trailer, Syrax, Moondancer, and Aemond’s Vhagar, take wing. Rhaenyra walks towards Syrax at nighttime, while Daemon’s Caraxes roars amid a raging storm. Even with a bigger dragon count, the Blacks are unlikely to deter the Greens as the latter have the largest riding dragon in the world – Vhagar.
The True Scale Of Dragon Warfare
Queen Rhaenyra’s personal sigil, i.e., the three-headed red dragon on a black field, is set ablaze near the Official Black Trailer’s end. The primary purpose of this symbolism is to add depth to the tale of kin strife and to convey the terrifying outcomes of dragon warfare. In this medieval power struggle, an all-out dragon war is the most destructive and inhumane method to bring the enemy to their knees.
House Targaryen crumbles on the inside, as two scions are ready to tear the family apart using their dragons. In so doing, they break with tradition, typical norms, and the rules of warfare. Principles and precedents such as proportionality, military necessity, and duty to the realm take a hit. The scale of destruction, as seen in the Official Black Trailer, is a call back to the punchline, “The only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon… was itself.”
Winterfell And Top Of The Wall
Rhaenyra sent her heir, Jacaerys, as her messenger to the most important kingdoms of the Vale and the North. In the trailer, Jace walks on an icy parchment alongside Tom Taylor’s Cregan Stark. The colossal ice structure that briefly appears is quite possibly the Wall.
Cregan Stark’s father, Lord Rickon, reigned as Lord of Winterfell in House of the Dragon‘s pilot episode. He traveled to King’s Landing to swear an oath of fealty to Princess Rhaenyra, and Starks are no oath breakers. Cregan will honor his father’s oath in lore, and HBO’s House of the Dragon. Jace adds in the trailer:
The realm will soon tear itself apart if men don’t remember the oaths sworn to King Viserys and to his rightful heir.
Rhaenyra Vs. Aegon II
By dubbing the usurper Aegon “Alicent’s son,” Rhaenyra refuses to acknowledge her half-brother’s Targaryen heritage. To her, he will always be a Hightower pawn, someone Alicent and her father installed on the Iron Throne to safeguard the interests of House Hightower:
…and yet… Alicient’s son sits my throne.
It was easy for Viserys the Peaceful to name Rhaenyra heir, but to stick to that decision, even though he was a sovereign, was a real challenge. Currently, Rhaenyra is a wounded mother and a victim of theft. She’s very different from the woman who showed restraint amid fears of escalation in House of the Dragon season 1’s finale episode.
Lady Baela Targaryen And Moondancer
Lady Baela Targaryen has acquired an impressive skill at dragon riding. It is pertinent to mention that Baela’s Moondancer did not make it to House of the Dragon – season 1 but now fights in its full glory.
Moondancer takes a deep dive and flies at a lower altitude in a battle sequence while Daemon threatens to “burn” those who reneged.
Gwayne Hightower’s Freeze Response; Corlys Advises Rhaenyra
The Official Black Trailer also features Alicent’s brother, Gwayne (portrayed by Freddie Fox) dressed in stunning Hightower armor. He freezes as a dragon is on the approach. He also bears minor cuts and scrapes in the snippet.
In another snippet, Lord Corlys Velaryon sees Rhaenyra on the dockside, while inspecting the Velaryon fleet. In a private confab, he advises Rhaenyra to act against the Hightower march:
You must crush this beast at its head.
Daemon Targaryen Asks People To Renounce The False King; The Greens Are In Mourning
The King Consort plots the war his way. He treats with various lords of Westeros, asking them to renounce the false king in favor of Rhaenyra. One thing’s clear: no one is a stronger Rhaenyra loyalist than her King Consort, Daemon.
In another snippet, the Greens (Helaena and Alicent) are in a funeral procession, dressed in all-black ensembles. The spectacle is for the masses in the aftermath of Blood and Cheese.
House of the Dragon – season 2 premieres at 9 p.m. ET Sunday, June 16 on HBO.
