Aemond crumples up a piece of paper in House of the Dragon‘s latest, which has much more to do with the Smallfolk of King’s Landing, who make up the worlds that Prince Regents, Kings, Queens, and smaller lords and ladies then rule. He has summoned Otto Hightower, threatened Aegon, and dismissed his mother from the Small Council. Rhaenyra demands respect for her authority at Dragonstone, while Daemon is a sitting duck at Harrenhal.

The Greens are fractured, and the dispersed Blacks are starting to unite. Ultimately, House of the Dragon – Episode 6 is galvanizing new characters into becoming Dragonriders, for the payoff at the Gullet. The HBO alum Andrij Parekh, who has previously directed for Watchmen and Succession, is the director of “Smallfolk,” while Eileen Shim is the writer.

In House of the Dragon, Aemond Targaryen sacrificed his brother, Aegon at Rook’s Rest to rise as Prince Regent, and it’s more than a term of address.

At King’s Landing: Aemond Tightens The Noose On The Lannisters, The Lone Strong, And Cole Marches Again

Aemond leads the Greens in House of the Dragon.

Weeks ago, Tyland had reported to Aegon’s Small Council that his brother, Jason Lannister, had raised a great army at Casterly Rock to march into the Riverlands to fight the Blackwoods and to root Daemon out. Weeks later, Jason is indeed at the head of the Lannister host but demands the aerial protection of Vhagar if he is to harass the Blackwoods. At Episode 6’s beginning, Jason stands outside the gates of House Lefford’s seat of Golden Tooth and welcomes himself into the stronghold. With very little protest, the lord of Golden Tooth makes way for him and the several ranks of the Green army to garrison there. But of course, it is war, and Golden Tooth does not have provisions to feed an army, or the cages of lions their pompous liege lord brings with him. There are a thousand knights, seven thousand archers, and men-at-arms behind Jason, while Lord Lefford has 500 fighting men.

Jason has merely gathered men, brought out his lions, and now rests at Golden Tooth. He’s clumsy and unintelligent and wouldn’t do well in battle. He demands Aemond and Vhagar fight for him, to which Aemond says:

Are the Lannisters so diminished that they cannot march from the Tooth to Harrenhal without an escort?

Tyland does make a good point, that Daemon and Caraxes are at the Riverlands, and the Lannister host, no matter how strong, cannot face them. But this is the least of Prince Regent’s worries, who looks to the Triarchy to break the Blacks’ blockade of the Gullet. A major difference between George R. R. Martin’s books and the HBO adaptation here is that, in the books, Otto looks to ally with the Triarchy to counter the Sea Snake. Aemond says in the show:

I’ve had enough of this cursed blockade.

Tyland, Alicent, and the Lord Commander, Criston Cole seem to agree on one point – that the Triarchy across the Narrow Sea cannot be trusted. They are pirates, who hunted Westerosi pirates in House of the Dragon Season 1 to gain control of the Stepstones. If the Triarchy gains from the Targaryen split, the shipping lanes will be disrupted once again and the combined fleets of Houses Hightower and Lannister will fail to keep them under control. The biggest takeaway here is that Aemond doesn’t like people questioning his decisions, and he must have his own way. Cole is sent away to the Riverlands against Daemon, and Alicent turns down Lord Jasper Wylde’s suggestion of offering her hand in marriage to the Red Kraken Dalton Greyjoy.

Aemond is loving authority but lacks temperance. He dismisses Alicent from the Small Council, urging her to turn to “domestic pursuits,” and at this point, the martyred princess Rhaenys’ words “…and yet you toil still in service to men. Your father, your husband, your son,” ring true. Alicent is unhappy to be removed from the council, and that too by her favored son. Her late lord husband and his daughter did not see an issue with women in positions of power, and she had a bigger stake earlier with Viserys heading the Small Council. Ironic as it may be, isn’t this the very basis of the formation of the Greens? The Greens’ (Aemond) strategy is to force Daemon and his Riverlords to fight the Lannisters and Cole’s weary army on two fronts. He promises to meet him at the right time.

Meanwhile, the sole Alicent loyalist – Grand Maester Orwyle, informs her that Otto hasn’t responded to her letters, yet, and that House Beesbury has risen against Hightowers over their Liege lord – Lyman’s murder. Alicent, who feels on edge about Aemond’s authority, apologizes to her maimed son, Aegon, for her past behavior. She’d pointed out his incompetence and lack of intelligence due to which Aegon flew to battle.

Aemond visits his brother, hoping to assess his mental status and how much of the battle he remembers. “Nothing,” says Aegon, as Aemond teaches him his next words:

You challenged Meleys. It was foolish.

Orwyle opens the door to Aegon’s chambers and views Aemond with suspicion. Aemond is losing people by the minute. Larys sees Otto’s recall as an oversight of his talents and colludes with the incapacitated Aegon at his chambers. He denies the King Milk of Poppy to reduce his brain fog, informs him of Aemond’s rise. This scheme is solely for Larys’ benefit, as he is known to attach with the higher-ups for his gain.

At Dragonstone: Corlys Velaryon Is The New Hand, And The Sowing Of The Seeds Has Begun

Rhaenyra and Jace watch Seasmoke burn Ser Steffon Darklyn in House of the Dragon.

Corlys Velaryon is the first to walk into the Chamber of the Painted table, awaiting Rhaenyra’s counsel and council. He puts on the Hand’s pin, and Rhaenyra’s Lord Commander, Ser Steffon Darklyn, is summoned to ask if he would be willing to tame Seasmoke. The Black Queen narrates her woes to her Lord Commander, pointing out why she needs more Dragonriders to fight the war for her. She is trapped on Dragonstone, lost Rhaenys and Meleys, and remains without an army. Rhaenyra’s research informs her that Ser Steffon’s grandmother’s grandmother, Aeriana, was a Targaryen princess. Rhaenyra warns him, but Steffon is happy to be given the chance. He and a Dragonkeeper meet their end in the taming of Seasmoke operation at the Dragondock.

Lord Bartimos Celtigar becomes the object of Rhaenyra’s ire when he questions her lack of foresight:

Seasmoke has fled Dragonstone and Ser Steffon was a valiant knight.

Rhaenyra is fresh off from the deaths at the Dragondock and slaps Celtigar hard to put him in his place. She wants the same responses to her authority as male leaders have been getting and, a few moments later, picks up a sword, wishing to swing it. Mysaria whispers in her ear to look for more highborn to claim dragons.

How Are the Smallfolk of King’s Landing Doing?

Rhaenyra Sends Her Gifts

Rhaenyra sends rowboats loaded with food to King's Landing in House of the Dragon.

The population of King’s Landing is facing starvation due to the Sea Snake’s blockade and people (Ulf) have grown tired of eating fish. Dyana (the same woman Aegon assaulted in Season 1) works at a tavern and brings Ulf a morsel of something. In the background, a woman on Mysaria’s payroll plants the story of the Greens’ merry-making and feasts at the Red Keep in honor of Aemond’s appointment. The description of lamb, mince pies, honey cakes, beef, and gravy stirs up the sentiments of those around them. The deed is done: the Greens have lost King’s Landing, but Aemond’s response is to have Larys Strong summon Otto Hightower as Hand.

Ulf says Viserys never ate while his subjects went hungry, which Mysaria’s plant counters with:

Aye. But he’s gone now, and his rightful heir denied her seat.

Hugh’s wife, Kat, is among the crowd that sees the Hightower army carting lambs inside the Red Keep. The Blacks are waging a war inside King’s Landing by sending rowboats loaded with food and bearing their red-and-black banner. People rush to the shores outside the city, causing turmoil, which even the finest knights cannot manage. Riots break out, and Hugh snatches a cache from a man, while Alicent and Helaena, who pray in the Great Sept, escape narrowly.

Before Alicent’s brother, Gwayne, leaves for Harrenhal, she inquires about her boy of sixteen, Daeron, who she sent to ward with her family. Gwayne describes the boy as kind, clever, and adept with his lute and sword. Alicent is delighted to know her youngest is kind, unlike the eldest two.

At Driftmark: Lord Corlys Commands His Son Alyn To Be His First Mate

Alyn and Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon.

Lord Corlys’ is at Driftmark, happy to see his ship repaired, and names the respectable Alyn his first mate. “There are more experienced men at your service,” Alyn turns him down, but Corlys won’t have it any other way. It’s a command and Alyn has no choice. ‘Tis the very rise of the Hull brothers. First, Baela Targaryen says Driftmark must pass to Salt and Sea, and now Corlys has chosen the man who is likely to be the next Lord of the Tides. Addam, who overhears this conversation from a distance, tempts his brother later by asking him to picture a new life of riches, the Driftwood Throne, servants, and some such. Addam and Alyn are the Sea Snake’s illegitimate sons. Alyn is happy to work in the drydock, while Addam wishes the Sea Snake had given him some of that attention.

At The Vale: Rhaena Discovers The Presence Of A Large Dragon

Joffrey Velaryon and Rhaena Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

Rhaena suspects the presence of a large dragon at the Vale from all the bones, charred sheep, and a patch of scorched earth, but to her disappointment, Jeyne Arryn tells her it’s a wild one, ranging for food. Lady Arryn brings more news – Prince Reggio has agreed to foster Princes Joffrey, Aegon, and Viserys at Pentos. She has arranged for a merchant cog – the Gay Abandon to take the Targaryen younglings to Pentos. Rhaena may play the babysitter to Rhaenyra’s youngest sons now, but there’s a reason the wild dragon is in the Vale.

At Harrenhal: Daemon And Alys Rivers Make Progress, Grover Tully Is Dead

Alys Rivers and Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

Paddy Considine’s Viserys is the bingo card of Episode 6. Daemon is guilty of abandoning Viserys when the latter had his queen Aemma killed in childbed to bring out the infant (Baelon) who barely lived a day. Daemon had celebrated his rise as the King’s heir, and toasted the dead Prince as the “heir for a day,” while Viserys hoped his brother would stand by his side. Daemon stands silently as his brother, the king on the Iron Throne, gives him the whole you-chose-to-celebrate-your-rise routine from House of the Dragon Season 1. He finds himself banging at the door in his conscious state and holds Simon Strong responsible. Whether Simon is working for his clubfooted nephew Larys, or is a Hightower agent, or Rhaenyra’s man, Daemon, who likes to call himself King, knows not.

Daemon’s visions are vivid imagery of his past. The complexities of guilt, and being an absentee brother chip away at his soul. Having had enough, he walks out of Harrenhal, only to be stopped by Alys Rivers at the gates of Godswood. She blames the ghost of Harren the Black in the cursed Kingspyre Tower and shames Daemon for his vagabond lifestyle. She knows he’s been everywhere – from Dragonstone to the Stepstones, living at Pentos and now Harrenhal. He sees the Iron Throne as a prize as opposed to a burden, and she recalls Viserys and Rhaenyra never wanting it. Daemon knows his shortcomings and asks for Alys’ counsel to deal with the Riverlands. She speaks highly of Lord Paramount Tullys’ presence in the land, and how Grover Tully held the crumbling region together. Before setting off to treat Lord Grover, she speaks of change:

Do nothing now. In three days’ time, the winds will shift.

In the last of Daemon’s visions, he consoles Viserys (as he should have) while the latter mourns the dead Aemma. Daemon’s dream sequences are corrective in action. When woken up, Simon tells Daemon that the collective of Riverruns Maesters and their healer, Alys, failed to save Lord Grover, and the young Oscar Tully has risen as Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. “What was the manner of Lord Grover’s passing?” asks Daemon who already suspects Alys had a hand in it.

Seasmoke seeks Addam of Hull at Driftmark and chooses to bend his neck to him, as opposed to Addam seeking him out in lore. Mysaria opens up to Rhaenyra about surviving her father’s assault, and the two kiss. Their moment is disrupted by Rhaenyra’s Queensguard informing her that Seasmoke has taken a rider, and has been cited flying over Spicetown. Mysaria suspects the Greens while Rhaenyra jets off on Syrax, leaving Jace huffing and puffing at House of the Dragon Episode 6’s end.
