Summary
- Season 3 of House of the Dragon will begin filming this year, but fans may have to wait until 2026 to watch it.
- Rhys Ifans hinted at the start of shooting for season three, portraying Ser Otto Hightower in the series.
- Fans anticipating the new season can look forward to meeting new characters like Daeron Targaryen and possibly seeing Admiral Lohar in action.
As House of the Dragon fans begin to get restless about when they will get to see season three of the HBO show, one of the fantasy series’ actors gives an update on when filming will take place. The long-awaited Game of Thrones prequel season two arrived in June last year and before anyone could say ‘Dracarys’, it was greenlit for a third and fourth season. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon focuses on the fall of the House Targaryen as the clan ascends into a huge civil war where families are broken apart by greed and betrayal.
Season three will follow on from the epic tale that the House of the Dragon season 2 finale left off, but now, the stakes are even higher as the Targaryen dynasty will continue to reign, by fire and by blood. Fans will also get to finally meet the long-awaited Daeron Targaryen, Aegon and Aemond’s brother when the show returns, and hopefully witness more of Admiral Lohar, played by Abigail Thorne, as she poses a unique challenge to Tyland Lannister. The success of the show wasn’t a huge surprise for those who tuned into the incredible Game of Thrones series with its complex yet captivating narratives and characters, in turn making it one of the most popular shows ever. However, the worry for some fans is that season three has a lot to live up to House of the Dragon‘s previous seasons and if the dreaded adaptation curse could finally raise its ugly head.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Filming Start Receives an Update From Rhys Ifans
In a conversation with ScreenRant to discuss his upcoming film Inheritance, an American espionage action movie also starring Phoebe Dynevor, Rhys Ifans disclosed a slight treat for fans regarding an update for House of the Dragon season three filming development. The seasoned actor said that although he doesn’t know the exact schedule just yet, season three’s start date for filming is most certainly on the cusp. “There’s something brewing”, said the actor who plays Ser Otto Hightower, a knight of House Hightower who served as Hand of the King to Jaehaerys I, Viserys I, and Aegon II. Ifans revealed that season three of House of the Dragon will “start shooting this year”, while also joking (we think) that viewers should then get to watch it in “about 25 years time.”
“I don’t know. I don’t know, but I can smell the sulfur. There’s something brewing. I can say, yeah, they start shooting soon this year, so I’m sure you’ll be able to watch it in about 25 years’ time.”
Ifans revealing that season three of House of the Dragon will start shooting soon falls in line with previous reports about its filming development. Last year on a podcast, the series’ showrunner Ryan Condal said that shooting would begin in the first quarter of 2025, which would work out to be January, February, or March. However, this would then make it seven months since season 2 premiered, which means that season three might not see the light of day until around March/April of 2026 – fourteen months since season two ended and that’s a heck of a long wait, although it didn’t do shows like Severance any harm.

While fans wait, the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off, which will focus on Ser Duncan and Prince Aegon Targaryen, aims to be released sometime in late 2025, so fantasy lovers should get their eyes on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms first.
