Summary

  • Nosferatu rakes in over $170M at the box office, Eggers’ biggest film yet, starring Lily Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgård.
  • Plot mirrors Dracula story, with Lily-Rose Depp praising director Eggers’ fresh take on the narrative.
  • Film is available in theaters and online; Focus Features distribution hints at future Peacock streaming release.

Nosferatu, which was written and directed by Robert Eggers, has proved a big box-office hit, making more than $170 Million on a budget of $50 Million. This is Egger’s biggest film to date, following on from cult favorites like The Witch, and The Lighthouse. Starring Lily Rose Depp and featuring celebrated horror actor Bill Skarsgård as the terrifying vampire Count Orlok, Nosferatu was perhaps the most anticipated horror release of 2024.

The film boasts an impressive cast of well-known and well-liked actors, including Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Nosferatu also stars Willem Defoe, who collaborated with director Robert Eggers previously in A24 horror film The Lighthouse, for which Defoe won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor. With this in mind, it makes sense that Nosferatu has been such a box-office success, and that audiences are still keen to find a way to watch it, whether for the first or second time. Here’s how to find Nosferatu streaming online.

What Is The Plot Of Nosferatu?

Nosferatu 2024

Nosferatu is set in the early Nineteenth century, like many classic Gothic tales, and tells the tale of a young woman named Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) who, as a young woman, unintentionally summons a supernatural creature, pledging herself to him for eternity. Later, her husband Thomas (Nicholas Hoult) sets out on a trip to Transylvania, tasked with selling a mysterious castle owned by Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård). Ellen is left with wealthy friends of her husband, Friedrich Harding and his wife Anna (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin), but feels increasingly vulnerable due to horrific visions. Meanwhile, Thomas finds himself in terrifying danger at the hands of Orlok in Transylvania. Soon it seems as though an evil force is taking control of their lives.

The plot of Nosferatu is very similar to another popular gothic story, Dracula. That is because the original silent film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, released in 1922, was itself an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel. Fans of the original Dracula, or the 1922 silent film will have some idea of what to expect from Nosferatu. Despite this, it’s safe to say Robert Eggers has made the film his own, with Lily-Rose Depp commenting at the film’s premiere that the director’s choice to center Ellen’s narrative leads to a ‘fresh take’ on the already well-known story.

How Would You Adapt Nosferatu Into A Video Game?

I think Nosferatu would work well as a game if it didn’t try to force in combat mechanics, and adapted the distinctly eerie atmosphere of the Robert Eggers’ movie and the original in a satisfying way. I think it would have to be some kind of detective game or a survival horror game, but it could also work well as a romantic-horror visual novel – something like Slay The Princess, for example.
