For a villain’s design to stand out, it needs to say something about their character, their goals, their ambitions, and ultimately, the persona that they are trying to present to the viewer. While none of the JoJo’s antagonists have bad designs, there are definitely some Araki seems to have spent just a little extra time on to make them as visually pleasing as possible. Before diving into the list, it should be clarified that, since only main antagonists are being counted, only one villain from each part will be taken into consideration. Additionally, only base forms will be analyzed rather than any transformations.

Kars (Battle Tendency)
Kars’ Intimidating Physique Is Complimented By Subtle Spots Of Vibrancy
Close
- First Appearance: Battle Tendency Episode 12
Kars, the leader of the Pillar Men, and ultimately the major villain of Part 2, is a fearsome opponent for Joseph to take on, and while he does have an intimidating appearance, it’s also fairly basic in its design. Kars was created at a time when many of the JoJo’s male characters were big and bulky brick houses, so clearly, a lot of effort was spent on making him as physically formidable as possible.
However, his long flowing purple hair and the scarf that never leaves his neck do help to add some vibrancy to Kars’ design, allowing him to stand out a little more than he would otherwise. Truth be told though, Joseph’s effortlessly stylish design in Part 2 easily supersedes Kars’ look, which can also often be overshadowed by the other villains.

Diavolo (Golden Wind)
Diavolo’s Minimalistic Design Is Still Just About Weird Enough To Suit The Series’ Tone
Close
- First Appearance: Golden Wind Episode 33
Diavolo has one of the most unusual designs out of any villain in the series, which is certainly saying something considering the show in question. The most notable aspect of his look is his long purple hair which contains what seems to be leopard spots dotted all around it. Then there’s the mesh wire vest which only covers part of his body, leaving him largely exposed, topped off with a pair of baggy purple pants.

Diavolo also contains some unique floral tattoos running down his long slender arms which adds even more style to his already flashy design. Diavolo is an example of how a villain can look effortlessly cool without actually needing to go too over the top, while also retaining just enough weirdness to make him a suitable villain for the series.

Dio Brando (Phantom Blood)
Dio’s Devious Classic Look Was Terrifying And Badass At The Same Time
Close
- First Appearance: Battle Tendency Episode 1
This is specifically referring to Dio in the second half of Phantom Blood after he uses the Mask and starts to take on the appearance that fans are most familiar with. While many fans will cite Part 3 Dio as being his most iconic look, credit still needs to be given to his Phantom Blood iteration as it’s certainly a design that strikes fear into readers due to how unorthodox it is. The long flowing golden hair may give a touch of elegance to Dio’s appearance, but his permanent scowl and devious eyes still present him as a malicious villain who cannot be trusted.
Dio also sports a pretty sophisticated ornate dual-colored shirt, along with breeches which certainly suit the time period, and make him look like an evil mastermind who still cares about looking the part. It might not be Dio’s best look, but it’s still one that served as a good template for what was to come.

Enrico Pucci (Stone Ocean)
Pucci’s Appearance Is Full Of References To His Character And Motives
Close
- First Appearance: Stone Ocean Episode 8
Pucci’s strange and unnerving appearance adds a lot of mystery to the main antagonist of Stone Ocean. The long purple gown containing a large cross in the middle gives the impression that he’s a man of religion, which feeds into his plan of creating the ultimate “Heaven”, while the zig-zag patterns in his hair and across his face go a long way in helping him stand out from the rest of the cast.

Araki also made sure that Pucci’s facial expressions were always calm and collected, even when he was in life-threatening danger, making him even more creepy. All in all, Pucci is a villain who doesn’t need to go to extreme lengths just to look cool, especially since the design Araki went with already sheds light on some of the core aspects of his character and beliefs.

Yoshikage Kira (Diamond Is Unbreakable)
A Casual Design Which Is Still Packed Full Of Color And Mystery
- First Appearance: Diamond Is Unbreakable Episode 21
Yoshikage Kira may look like an ordinary citizen, but that’s essentially the whole point of his character. Kira is a man who simply wants to be left alone in the world to enjoy his rather unusual hobbies, and as a result, he isn’t dressed up in some outlandish getup. Instead, Kira can often be seen wearing a purple suit with a green undershirt and patterned tie.
When mixed with his gold hair, it results in a mix match of colors which allows Kira to pop out of the screen every time he shows up. Kira’s design is a clever exercise in subverting expectations, as while he may look like a law-abiding citizen, it hides the cruel and twisted man who resides underneath the suit and tie. As a result, Kira’s look will always be iconic for how much it says about the character, but also due to how well it managed to successfully fool viewers.

Funny Valentine (Steelball Run)
The President Himself Certainly Looks The Part With This Classy And Sophisticated Look
- First Appearance: Steelball Run Chapter 7
Funny Valentine is the President of the United States in the story of Steelball Run, and it’s fair to say that, from a visual standpoint, he looks like a man who takes his role extremely seriously. Funny is almost always seen rocking a long pink trench coat with a purple undershirt poking out from below, which might sound outlandish for a president to wear, but in the context of JoJo’s, it comes across as pretty classy.
Adding to the class is Funny’s iconic hairstyle which stretches down to his shoulders where it then begins to curl, creating hole-like shapes that mimic the stars found on his back. It’s also worth emphasizing Funny’s facial expressions, and how he often comes across as more somber and sympathetic than many of his counterparts, making him all the more sinister as a villain.
2
Toru (JoJolion)
Araki Clearly Had A Blast Coming Up With The Weird Yet Captivating Design For Toru
Close
- First Appearance: JoJolion Chapter 81
Despite being introduced so late into JoJolion’s story, Toru still manages to steal every scene he’s in thanks to his frankly absurd yet captivating appearance. The gigantic afro, floral yellow pants, and teddy bear strapped to his arms all come together to give readers the impression that this is a guy who loves showing off his elaborate fashion sense, and it’s therefore clear Araki had a lot of fun when designing him.
Considering that fashion became a much bigger focus for Araki when creating the appearances of the characters in some of the more modern parts, it makes sense why Toru has such a dazzling design. It’s also yet again a clever way to mask the villain underneath by gifting him with such a stylish dress sense, but it’s just a shame he couldn’t hang around for a bit longer for fans to admire his look just a little more.

Dio Brando (Stardust Crusaders)
A Flashy Appearance Which Has Become Instantly Recognizable Among Anime Fans
Close
- First Appearance: Stardust Crusaders Episode 1
Dio’s revamped design in Part 3 has become one of the most recognizable appearances in all of anime. The wild shaggy blonde hair, long open yellow jacket, and crazed expression that never leaves his face all culminate in a villain who manages to look both terrifying and badass at the same time.
There are also just a ton of smaller details that add a lot of vibrancy to this look, such as the green hearts that act as kneepads, and the glossy golden bangles that he often wears on his wrists. Compared to Part 1, this Dio has much sharper facial expressions and feels as though it was the version of the character Araki always wanted to create from the very beginning, making him a joy to watch throughout Stardust Crusaders.
