Warning: The following contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 29, “Premature Death”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 has now completed the Hidden Inventory/Premature Death arc and is set to kick off the Shibuya Incident Arc, one fans should be excited for and scared at the same time, as some heartbreaks might be on the way. However, they have decided to make a quick stop with a couple of recaps of the first season and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 before starting with this arc at the end of August.

Still, episode 29 of Jujutsu Kaisen had a clear goal, clear up what exactly happened so Suguru Geto changed completely and became the cult leader seeking to exterminate all non-sorcerers. Truth is, his growing doubts had already started after witnessing Riko’s death and the infamous clapping cult members.

The Seed Of A Conversation

Suguru meets Yuki

One year after the Toji incident, Suguru remains affected in a major way. Both he and Satoru are assigned to missions by themselves, his life as a jujutsu sorcerer is an eternal loop of defeating and absorbing curses. But what has been missing since then is a purpose, a motivation, and it’s that absence of a real reason to continue what makes the job even more nightmarish.

Not by accident he has started to develop some level of hatred for all non-sorcerers but at the same time he tries to reject this feeling, unable to settle for one path or the other. Sometimes all you need is the most unexpected conversation. Yuki Tsukumo, one of the very few Special-Grade sorcerers, randomly showed up and started chatting with another of the Special-Grade sorcerers in Suguru.

What could have been just a friendly chit-chat ended up defining the future of the jujutsu society. Yuki’s pursue in life is creating a world where cursed spirits aren’t born, one way of doing so would be eliminating cursed energy, for what Toji was the only known case, or make it possible for all humanity to control their cursed energy. Essentially, she confirmed for Geto that it was possible to kill every non-sorcerer in order to create a world without cursed spirits. A great, but far from the only, detail from the episode was the clapping sound the moment Yuki states that’s possible.

The Truth I Chose

Suguru conquering the cult

Suguru’s descent to darkness was sealed. He found a reason to kill the “monkeys” that were responsible for his comrades deaths and pain, responsible for all the suffering cursed spirits create, the ideal of protecting the weak didn’t much sense anymore. Taking over the religious group he would take any action necessary to ensure that one day a world made only of sorcerers would exist.

Suguru’s strong ideals were the foundation for Satoru’s own behavior. His one and only friend acted as an example when he would just murder all the members of the Star Religious Group that were celebrating Riko’s death. It all kept adding to Suguru’s burden until the not-very-surprising change, however, Satoru couldn’t understand how could he kill all those people, even his parents, but also couldn’t take action against him, all that was left was anger, guilt, frustration, and sadness. Their last interaction left one of the best quotes in the entire series: “Are you the strongest because you are Satoru Gojo? Or does being the strongest make you Satoru Gojo”.

Precisely, the theme of the episode is how each individual perceives the same truth. Satoru couldn’t handle Suguru’s decisions, Suguru couldn’t take the mistreatment and death of his comrades any longer and Shoko has literally no reaction to it other than perhaps empathy for Suguru. Among the classic shōnen group of three this break-up reflects the best the shared feelings and connections between them while also allowing each one to be themselves till the very end.

Megumi And Satoru

Megumi and Satoru

If the whole Gojo’s past story was about how Toji affected everyone’s lives one way or another, is a must to mention Megumi and how, after losing Suguru, Satoru devoted himself to helping others, starting with that one kid whose father he killed. The masterpiece of a conversation between them made Satoru break character for a second and showed Megumi’s maturity, although he had to be given the circumstances.

In the end, Satoru Gojo fans know from the first season is nothing more than a product of the feelings Toji Fushiguro and Suguru Geto left in him. His trait as strongest sorcerer had a say on who he would become, but ultimately, he is shaped by his interactions with others something that allows him to keep growing by later meeting Yuta Okkotsu and Yuji Itadori and all the tough decisions he will have to make in order to protect them or others. Finally, Jujutsu Kaisen is back in the present tense.
