Even after Yuji managed to awaken his powers, Sukuna is still going strong, and in the previous chapter, he finally manifested a proper domain expansion, even after Gojo fried his brain. This just goes to show how skilled Sukuna truly is, and highlights the fact that he truly is the King of Curses.
Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine
Sukuna Possesses A Divine Domain Expansion Unlike Any
Sukuna is the strongest sorcerer in the history of Jujutsu Kaisen. As such, it should not be a surprise to the fans to know the fact that he can manifest a Domain Expansion. Given that domain expansions are the pinnacle of Jujutsu sorcerery, it should not be a surprise to any fan to know that Sukuna has perfected this art to the fullest. In the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, Sukuna manifested his domain on multiple occasions against Gojo, however, eventually, he lost this power and that was down to the fact that Gojo used Unlimited Void to fry his brain. This meant that Sukuna could not use Malevolent Shrine, and, thus, his strongest power was lost. For those who do not remember, Malevolent Shrine is an incredibly powerful domain that allows Sukuna to slice and dice just about everything in his vicinity.
Malevolent Shrine differs from other domains in that it doesn’t create a separate space using a barrier, akin to an artist painting not on a canvas, but on air. truly, a divine technique.
Using a Binding Vow, Sukuna can effectively increase the range of his domain to almost up to 200 m. This is what he did in Shibuya, and it is likely what he has continued to do in Shinjuku as well. Sukuna can also close his domain if he wants. This was confirmed by him during his fight against Gojo. However, keeping his domain open gives him a massive advantage in battle, and fans have seen that on many occasions. The power of Sukuna’s domain is incredible. No matter who is in his path, escaping certain death is nearly impossible for them, under normal circumstances. Only a handful can survive the onslaught of Sukuna’s incredibly powerful Malevolent Shrine, and even the usage of simple domains often proves to not be enough. Truly, Malevolent Shrine is the pinnacle of Sukuna’s jujutsu and allows him to slice and dice just about everything in the world that exists.
How Sukuna Created A New High-Level Malevolent Shrine
Sukuna Changed His Domain In Shinjuku
In Shinjuku Showdown, Sukuna, just like any other sorcerer, would have a lot of trouble dealing with Maki. This is simply down to the fact that Maki does not have any cursed energy. Dealing with Maki requires one to be able to consciously track her. If Sukuna, who was up against multiple Sorcerers in Shinjuku, took his attention off her even for a second, Maki could easily take him down. In fact, if Sukuna were to close his domain, then he would be at an even bigger disadvantage. This is because the rules of a normal domain absolutely do not work on Maki. She can go in and out of a domain and even avoid the sure-hit effect of a domain expansion due to not registering as a person with cursed energy.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji Confirmed To Surpass Sukuna
Yuji will be surpassing Sukuna in JJK.
To counter that, Sukuna ended up creating a very powerful domain. Or, it can be said that Sukuna did basically the same thing that he did in Shibuya. Sukuna managed to create an incomplete domain, as mentioned by Yuji Itadori. This domain was not utilized from the part of the brain that was destroyed by Malevolent Shrine. Thanks to his black flashes, Sukuna gained the ability to utilize the other part of his brain to craft Malevolent Shrine. He did just that, and was able to craft this high-level domain. This domain was one that did not have a barrier. An open barrier meant that Sukuna could basically attack just about anything in its effective range and chop up everything. This also meant that things in the real world could get targeted by this domain expansion.
A change of palm signs, a cursed technique with a part of the brain unaffected by Unlimited Void, and the operation of a barrier technique
Sukuna’s domain, as fans know, can target inanimate objects as well, and that is down to the fact that he does not use a barrier to register things with cursed energy and trap them inside his domain. Sukuna simply paints on an open canvas and this allows him to affect things in the real world.
This meant that Sukuna’s domain, using slashes such as Cleave and Dismantle, could essentially target things in the real world, such as many buildings, and including people with no cursed energy, such as Maki. Had Sukuna not done that, then, hitting Maki with his cursed technique would have become impossible. It was purely to target Maki along with everyone else that Sukuna ended up creating this high-level domain.
The Downside Of The New Malevolent Shrine
The New Malevolent Shrine Comes With Some Weaknesses
Close
While Sukuna’s domain truly is very special, fans also need to keep in mind that this domain does come with some downsides. For one, fans already know that Sukuna is incredibly tired at this point. He has been fighting continuously for quite a while, and has been taking on one sorcerer after another. Of course, he still continues to go strong and has devised several powerful jujutsu techniques. Despite that, however, Sukuna isn’t at his best and this is evident from the fact that the author clearly mentioned that Sukuna cannot maintain this high-level domain for long.
Malevolent Shrine would collapse in 99 seconds!
According to the narrator, Sukuna’s high-level domain can only last for 99 seconds. His current state ensures that he can’t go beyond the 99-second limit, and after the time is up, Malevolent shrine will inevitably collapse.
Still, Sukuna’s domain does look very powerful, regardless. This is down to the fact that this is the divine domain. However, at the same time, this time around, there appears to be a typhoon around his domain expansion, the reason for which has not been explained in the story as of yet.
To avoid any confusion, fans should simply assume that Sukuna’s domain right now is the same as the one he utilized in Shibuya. There is no difference between the two, apart from the fact that Sukuna is using a different part of his brain, and is in a worse condition right now. But, the author does state that the effective range as well as the power of the domain is not compromised. The only thing that is compromised is his ability to maintain the domain for a long period of time.
In JJK chapter 258, the sorcerers were able to tank the vast majority of the attacks sent their way after this domain expansion was unleashed. However, Sukuna still has more up his sleeve that the fans have not seen just yet.
Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 259, is set to be May 12, 2024.
