Divine Dogs are the two twin wolf shikigami that are summoned using the Ten Shadows Technique of the Zenin Clan. In the Jujutsu Kaisen series, Megumi summons the Divine Dogs to attack opponents, track scents or warn Megumi of incoming curses. They are also able to lead Megumi to specific targets if needed.
A prodigy and student of Jujutsu High, Megumi inherited this technique from the Zenin bloodline, which allows the user to summon shikigamis created from his own shadow. The addition of the Divine Dogs to Megumi’s arsenal of shikigamis gives him a powerful offensive ability when he is in battle. But, just how useful are the Divine Dogs?

What Does Shikigamis Have To Do With The Divine Dogs?
Always Ready To Aid Megumi In His Battles
To understand what the Divine Dogs are, it is important to understand the meaning of shikigamis. Shikigamis are cursed familiars which resemble cursed spirits which a user can summon at will to either protect them or help them in battle. Depending on the power of shikigami, summoning them can sometimes prove to be reckless if a shikigami is an overpowering one. Luckily, the Divine Dogs are quite ‘tame’ and can be easily controlled by Megumi. The strength of a shikigami also depends on the skill level of the user.
The Divine Dogs are wolf-like shikigami that possess heightened senses, making them useful for hunting and tracking curses. Megumi also has a close bond with these Divine Dogs as they are the first creatures that Megumi learns to summon with his Ten Shadows Technique. Not only are the Divine Dogs used for spying, but also as extremely powerful dogs capable of tearing through opponents with their teeth and claws.
At the beginning of the series, we see that Megumi is able to summon two Divine Dogs, one black and one white one. These twin shikigami dogs work together in combat and are able to overwhelm an opponent easily. However, technically, if a shikigami is destroyed, they cannot be summoned again. During the Fearsome Womb episode, Megumi, Yuji and Nobara are sent to rescue inmates of a detention center haunted by a cursed womb.
Megumi summons his white Divine Dog to investigate the place, but later he finds the dog killed by a special grade cursed spirit, leaving Megumi with only the black Divine Dog. After the death of the white Dog, all the power from the white is then transferred to the black Dog, allowing it to evolve into a powerful Divine Dog known as Divine Dog: Totality. This new form of Divine Dog is much bigger and stronger, plus it can hold its ground against stronger cursed spirits. This is seen during the fight against Hanami, as the Divine Dog:Totality form was able to inflict significant damage on Hanami.

What Are The Drawbacks Of The Divine Dogs?
As Shikigamis, The Divine Dogs Are Useful Companions
A few drawbacks to using the Divine Dogs or shikigamis in general, is that once they are destroyed, they cannot be summoned again. However, the surviving shikigamis are still able to inherit the power of the fallen shikigami as explained above. This means that Megumi is constantly at risk if he does not wisely choose which shikigami to summon. The Divine Dogs do not possess infinite durability and can be injured easily if they are overpowered. If a Divine Dog encounters an extremely powerful cursed spirit, their chances of survival are low.

Similar to all of Megumi’s shikigamis, the Divine Dogs are powered by his cursed energy, this means that a user’s skill level and strength are directly tied to them. If Megumi is significantly weakened, he may struggle to keep the Divine Dogs active during a battle. While the Divine Dogs are purposeful shikigami, their creative use of them is what makes them powerful assets. Megumi’s use of the Divine Dogs is an important part of his strategy in battle, and he uses them to the fullest extent.
