Chapter 257 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga dropped a bombshell reveal about Yuji’s already strange family, so let’s see how it looks now.
Highlights
- Yuji’s mysterious background is finally revealed in Chapter 257, tying his family’s lineage to Sukuna and Kenjaku’s sinister plan.
- Jin Itadori’s revelation as Sukuna’s twin alters Yuji’s fate, showing Kenjaku’s calculated manipulation for the perfect vessel.
- The relation between Yuji, his family, and the powerful sorcerers in history brings complexity and depth to the series’ final arc.
From the very start of the series, Jujutsu Kaisen’s protagonist, Yuji Itadori, had a very vague and mysterious background, with almost nothing known about his family, who he was, why he was so physically gifted, and why he alone could withstand Sukuna’s control over his body. However, the recent release of Chapter 257 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga answered many of these questions.
This revelation brought everything about the boy full circle. Along with this, it finally revealed why Sukuna had such a disdain for him, as their connection runs deep for over 1000 years. So, let’s take a look at all the known members of the Itadori family and see why it is such a strange assortment of people who have made Yuji the person he is!

Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji Might Have The Strongest Hidden Technique Of Them All
Chapter 257 of Jujutsu Kaisen finally sees Sukuna on the back foot, and this may be because of Yuji’s possible secret techniques!
Yuji’s Mother – Kaori Itadori/Kenjaku
First Appearance | Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 143, “One More Time” |
---|---|
Debut Date | March 22, 2021 |
Fans knew right from the jump that Yuji’s parentage would contain quite an important detail that explains his power, but no one could have predicted that his mother would have been Kenjaku himself, one of the oldest and most powerful sorcerers in history. While some mystery remained, this reveal showed a lot of the reasons behind Yuji’s innate talent, although it opened up far more questions in the process.
Even I’m impressed. Sukuna’s vessel is tough.
Significance:
This has been one of the biggest revelations in the entire series, mostly because it shows what the villains’ plan had been from the start. Kenjaku had been planning to make Yuji a vessel for Sukuna for a very long time, and to do this, he took over Kaori’s body, which means that, even putting the Culling Game and all of his prior planning aside, Kenjaku has always been the biggest driving force behind every major event in the series.
Yuji’s Father – Jin Itadori
First Appearance | Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 143, “One More Time” |
---|---|
Debut Date | March 22, 2021 |
Up until Chapter 257 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, fans believed that Kenjaku was the sole reason behind Yuji’s strength. However, the bombshell reveal was made that, through the complicated workings of the soul, Jin Itadori was the reincarnation of Sukuna’s twin from over 1000 years ago! This changed everything, as it became clear why Kenjaku specifically chose Jin to be the father of Yuji to create the perfect vessel for Sukuna.
Significance:
Twins in Jujutsu Kaisen are born with a single soul, which is why they’re often seen as undesirable by much of Jujutsu society. The singular nature of their soul divides Cursed Energy between 2 people, making each of them weaker than they should have been if they were alone. This also happened with Sukuna and his twin, whom the Disgraced One consumed, forcing it to wander the Earth until it resurrected into Jin’s body. After this, Kenjaku finds the reincarnation and gives birth to Yuji because of it, revealing Yuji to be more important than ever before.

It’s an important question to ask regarding any story like Jujutsu Kaisen, but the Shibuya Incident especially warrants asking this.
Yuji’s Uncle – Sukuna
First Appearance | Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 1, “Ryomen Sukuna” |
---|---|
Debut Date | March 5, 2018 |
When Sukuna was in the womb, he had a twin brother with him. However, their mother was starving and couldn’t provide the children with proper sustenance, leading Sukuna to consume his twin brother within the womb, which gave him his grotesque original appearance. After consuming his brother and taking all of the Cursed Energy they had, the brother’s soul wandered the world for quite some time, eventually reincarnating as Jin Itadori.
What the…? What is this strength? I get it. The boy is from that time…
Significance:
This is perhaps the biggest reveal so far in the entire series because it shows why Sukuna has always had a special disdain for Yuji this entire time. It should also be noted that, since twins are genetically identical, Sukuna has the same genetic makeup as Jin, which means that Sukuna is virtually identical to Yuji’s father! This adds another level of complexity to the story as it enters its final arc.
Yuji’s Brothers – Choso And The Death Paintings
First Appearance | Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 53, “Completion” |
---|---|
Debut Date | April 1, 2019 |
It is known that Kenjaku’s inherent technique is that of body swapping, which he does by slicing open the heads of his victims and supplanting his brain within them. This gives him access to the person’s memories and body. About 150 years before the main story, he took over the body of Noritoshi Kamo and created the Death Paintings by mixing the blood of a human and a Cursed Spirit, earning the title of ‘the most evil sorcerer in history’.
Significance:
Though they all started as villains opposed to Yuji and his comrades, Choso eventually got a vision that showed him that he and Yuji were brothers, a connection that was later confirmed when Kenjaku was revealed to be the reason behind both of their existence. Since then, Choso has proven to be one of Jujutsu High’s strongest and most invaluable allies.
Yuji’s Grandfather – Wasuke Itadori
First Appearance | Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 1, “Ryomen Sukuna” |
---|---|
Debut Date | March 5, 2018 |
Yuji’s grandfather is not explicitly important to the overall plot like the rest of these characters are. However, after the deaths of both of Yuji’s parents, Wasuke was the one who raised him and was the only family Yuji had until he too died.
Significance:
Wasuke’s significance isn’t much more than him raising Yuji. However, he knew from the start that there was something amiss about Kaori and that Yuji’s birth was unnatural, something he tried to tell his son Jin. Many fan theories also say he recognized Kenjaku’s stitches upon Kaori, stating he had seen them before, perhaps even on Yuji’s grandmother!
Honorable Mention – Aoi Todo, Yuji’s ‘Brother’
First Appearance | Jujutsu Kaisen, Chapter 16, “Affection” |
---|---|
Debut Date | June 25, 2018 |
Todo, while not even being blood-related to Yuji, insists upon them being brothers. Though they met back in the Goodwill Event arc, their friendship has lasted for far longer than that, and while Todo is effectively useless as a sorcerer now, his impact on Yuji’s growth is greater than can ever be stated.
We are the exception!
Significance:
Todo started off as Yuji’s enemy, but after hearing about how Yuji’s taste in women matches up to his own, he began to think of the young sorcerer as a kindred spirit. By working together, they defeated 2 Special Grade Curses in Hanami and Mahito. The latter had taken everything from Yuji, who would have died had it not been for Todo. It was only due to the Boogie Woogie sorcerer that Yuji was able to defeat Mahito.
