Marvel Comics: Best Cities To Live In

Most cities in comic books are fraught with danger, but these locations in the Marvel universe stand as a bit safer than others.

Highlights

  • New York City is Marvel Comics’ superhero capital, but its constant exposure to international and extraterrestrial events leaves it vulnerable to attacks, despite an abundance of heroes.
  • New Orleans is a magical hub with a strong connection to the mystical arts, making it one of the most magically protected cities in the Marvel Universe.
  • North Salem, home to the X-Men, offers a high level of mutant defense and protection to nearby cities, making it a safe haven for both mutants and humans.

Marvel Comics being a multiverse home to various superheroes and supervillains means much of the places on both Earth and beyond can be the site of various conflicts and adventures. Since groups like the Avengers and the X-Men often save the world from various threats, fans of the publisher’s works may imagine trying to live in one of the many cities that exist in the Marvel Universe.

A feature image of Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, and Professor Xavier Related Marvel: 10 Overpowered Superpowers All sorts of fantastic superpowers have appeared in both Marvel movies and comics, but some are over the top.

With locations such as the Avengers Tower, the Sanctum Sanctorum, and Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters situated all around the world, fans of Marvel Comics might be wondering just where is the best city to live in should one arrive in the Marvel Universe. However, with constant threats of supervillains in mind, how would Marvel Comics’ most popular cities fare as homes to civilians?

10 New York City

Practically The World’s Superhero Capital

New York

New York

First Appearance

Marvel Comics #1, 1939

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

The Avengers (Avengers Mansion), Fantastic Four (Baxter Building), Iron Man (Stark Tower), Green Goblin (Osborn Laboratories)

Considered the largest metropolitan area in the United States in both area and geography, New York City remains a standout in Marvel Comics due to the abundance of superpowered activity. New York City proper is already home to superheroes such as the Avengers Mansion of the Avengers and the Baxter Building of the Fantastic Four. Moreover, small-scale criminal activity within its boroughs also seems managed by heroes like Spider-Man and Daredevil – with “manage” being the operative term.

New York City being Marvel Comics’ superhero capital places the city at a crossroads. While it’s true that citizens remain safe from superpowered villains due to an abundance of heroes, international and extraterrestrial events often needing the support of New York-based teams still leave the city vulnerable to attack. With citizens always at the risk of being collateral damage from the occasional supervillain hijinks and weekly alien invasions, just having heroes on call may not be enough to make New York “the best” among Marvel’s cities.

9 New Orleans

A Hub Of Strong Magic, Home To Marvel’s Premiere Magic School

First Appearance

Human Torch #3, 1940

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

Doctor Strange (Strange Academy)

Among cities in Marvel Comics, the number of supernatural beings and events happening in New Orleans make the city’s association with magic anything but declared. On top of invasion attempts from zombies, demons, and monsters, wielding villains such as magical Loki and mutant Selene also attempted to tap into New Orleans’ mystical strength for nefarious deeds.

Moreover, New Orleans’ connection with magic is even made more apparent in Strange Academy, a school of magic founded by Sorcerers Supreme Doctor Strange and Brother Voodoo within the city given its potential for magic. Compared to other cities with superhuman groups, New Orleans being a site for students of the mystical arts allows it to be constantly protected by young heroes. Not only that, teaching staff comprised of the likes of the Ancient One and students with ties to powerhouses like Dormammu means these figures have a vested interest in protecting both the academy and the city it is in, making New Orleans one of the most magically protected cities in the world.

8 K’un-Lun

A Mythical City In Its Own Pocket Dimension

K'un-Lun

Located In, Country Of Origin

Kunlun Mountains, Himalayas

First Appearance

Marvel Premiere #15, 1974

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

Iron Fist

Home to the immortal dragon Shou-Lou, K’un Lun in the mystical Kunlun Mountains technically exists in its own space as a pocket dimension. Known as one of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven, K’un-Lun is just one of many cities protecting mystical treasures and secrets that phase in and out of Earth every few or so years. Among these Capital Cities, K’un-Lun has had the most connection to Earth due to the existence of the Iron Fist, its main guardian.

Although other depictions of K’un-Lun saw its invasion at the hands of nefarious organizations such as the Hand, K’un-Lun in the main Marvel Comics continuity has largely been a well-defended city. Its nature as a place existing in its own pocket dimension means it’s much harder to access for villains willing to wreak havoc within it. Moreover, K’un-Lun staying in contact with the other six Capital Cities means help will always be on its way should the need arise.

7 North Salem

X-Men #1

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

Xavier’s School For Higher Learning, Jean Grey School For Higher Learning (X-Men)

While North Salem is technically a town and not strictly a city, its prominence in Marvel Comics can be alluded to as being the home of the X-Men. North Salem being “Mutant HQ” is largely due to the existence of Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters which, upon its destruction, became the home to both Xavier’s School For Higher Learning and Jean Grey School For Higher Learning.

Although the X-Men have had their share of schisms and internal conflicts, they remain a force dedicated to the protection of both mutants and humankind. Settlers of North Salem can count on them and their resources to protect them from various threats, much in the same way the Avengers and New York-based heroes can save the Big Apple. Given New Salem’s location as a town, the X-Men’s protection may as well extend to nearby cities such as New Haven, Bridgeport, Waterbury, Newburgh, and Yonkers.

Considered as the first mutant civilization, Threshold thrived as a colony as early as the Proterozoic Era some 2-billion years before humanity graced Earth. This advanced society was led by two houses: mutants of the Enriched, and humans of the Enshrined. Their peaceful coexistence would prevail against some of the earliest threats Earth faced back then, such as the burgeoning Shi’ar Empire and the underwater Unbreathing.

Threshold would eventually meet its destruction at the hands of Stryfe, Cable’s fellow time-travelling clone. However, what sets Threshold apart from other former civilizations is its existence in a time loop. After Kitty Pryde realized that both present-day Genosha and the first mutant settlement of Threshold would be destroyed, she discovered that she was in charge of the latter’s creation. After placing the genetic material of dead Genoshans into a Mysterium cube, she sent it back in time as the Seed that would lead to the creation of Threshold.

5 Krakoa

The Closest Mutants Had To A Paradise

Krakoa

Krakoa

First Appearance

Giant-Size X-Men #1, 1975

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

X-Men

Despite Krakoa being no man’s land after the events of Fall of X, it stands as one of mutantkind’s best settlements on Earth compared to all previous attempts. Originally a hostile sentient island, the efforts of Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Moira MacTaggert as well as Cypher and Warlock transformed the living island Krakoa into an island paradise for mutants.

Eventually becoming a mutant democracy and oligarchy, Krakoa became a sovereign nation that became the embodiment of Charles Xavier’s dream of peaceful coexistence between mankind and mutants. Special Flowers of Krakoa became the nation’s main exports, transforming into medicine that extends human life and cures diseases, creates instant-travel Gateways, and even entire Habitants on alien planets. Despite the devastation caused by external forces and internal scheming within the Quiet Council, mutants could once consider Krakoa as the one place free of prejudice.

4 Attilan

The Inhumans’ Perfect Refuge From Humanity

Attilan

Earth (North Atlantic Ocean, Himalayas, Blue Side of the Moon, Hudson River)

First Appearance

Fantastic Four #47

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

The Inhumans

While the history of Inhumans concerning their arrival on Earth is constantly retconned, one thing is for certain: the Inhumans have had a growing distrust towards humanity, whose penchant for warfare had threatened their peaceful society. This resulted in Inhumans residing in Attilan, a technologically advanced city that had to be relocated a few times after being disturbed by superhuman affairs.

Originally located in the North Atlantic Ocean, Black Bolt and the Royal Family had the entire city moved to the Himalayas and even the Blue Side of the Moon. Upon its destruction, Attilan became New Attilan and relocated to the Hudson River. Despite its tendency for relocation, the Inhumans’ possession of advanced tech and the loyalty of the Inhuman Royal Family towards its people has transformed the city into a haven for the Inhuman population. Its small area and dedicated protection from its leadership won’t put New Attilan at risk of being compromised because its protectors had to be called off-world to a mission.

3 Olympia

The New Home Of The Eternals

Olympia

Located In, Country Of Origin

Greece

First Appearance

Eternals #5, 1976

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

The Eternals

While the Inhumans lived in their settlement of Attilan, the Eternals had their home of Olympia situated in Greece. This hidden home of the Eternals is its second iteration, as their original home of Titanos was accidentally destroyed. Upon settling in Olympia, the Eternals have stayed here since. Not much is known about Olympia except how it has a rival in the form of Polaria, another Eternal settlement.

Despite Attilan and the Inhumans being the more “popular” variant of life created by the Kree, Olympia stands as the safer city due to its lack of activity in recent comics. Unlike Attilan, which experienced many destructive conflicts, Olympia being governed by the likes of Ikaris makes it an extremely powerful settlement. Moreover, the existence of the Eternals’ Activation Chamber constantly allows them to be resurrected.

2 Birnin Zana

Home Of The Wakandan Royal Family

Birnin Zana

Located In, Country Of Origin

Wakanda

First Appearance

Jungle Action (Vol. 2) #6, 1973

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

Black Panther

Despite technological advancements in the Marvel universe, none could compare to the sheer technological sophistication of Wakanda as represented by Birnin Zana, its capital city. While other parts of the African nation are already advanced courtesy of Vibranium, Birnin Zana shines apart from the rest with notable locations such as the Royal Palace of Wakanda where Black Panther resides as well as the Necropolis where he reigns as King of the Dead.

While not often explored in comics, its status as the capital of Earth’s most advanced nation places both the region and its people among those with the best protection and comforts life in the Marvel Multiverse has to offer. Due to Wakanda’s strict foreign policy, troublemakers would have a much harder time breaching both the nation and the city.

1 Omnipotence City

A Nexus Of All Gods

Omnipotence City

Located In, Country Of Origin

First Appearance

Thor: God of Thunder #3, 2012

Notable Heroes, Villains, Groups

Thor, Various Pantheons

While mythological pantheons of gods often have their “base” of operations such as Mount Olympus for the Greeks and the Nine Realms for the Norse Gods, Omnipotence City has become the intersection of all pantheons in Marvel Comics. Said to have been created by the first elder gods after the First Great War of the Gods, Omnipotence City serves as the “nexus” or center point of all major pantheons.

Not much is known about the nature of Omnipotence City and its residents, but it’s formed out of the first clays of creation and powered by energy from the First Sun. Omnipotence City being a parliament built for the gods means its defenses must be of the highest caliber, especially if it’s designed to protect gods themselves. Being a parliament, one can surmise the location should also have its fair share of citizens in charge of maintaining the city. With the gods on their side, no place is likely as safe as Omnipotence City.
