Warning: The following contains spoilers for Masamune-kun’s Revenge R Episode 5, “So We Became A Couple”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Continuing from the last episode, Makabe Masamune finally reveals his true identity to Aki in episode 5. He reveals that he is the little chubby boy who accidentally comes to her house and ends up playing with her all those years ago. In doing so, he also uncovered Gasou Kanetsugu’s lies about his identity and also about the fact that Gasou is actually a girl.

However, Masamune never mentioned anything about Yoshino’s lies to Aki. Most likely because he doesn’t want to damage the relationship between the two girls who have known each other since childhood. One thing leads to another, and Masamune and Aki finally become an official couple. So what does this reunion mean for the series?

As Mentioned In The First Episode

Before we discuss what the events that happened in episode 5 means to the series, let’s briefly talk about the clear and unmistakable attempt of foreshadowing that happened right at the first episode of Masamune-kun’s Revenge R. Specifically the part where Masamune explained to a budding Parisian manga artist about the law of Japanese rom-com manga.

He said the main point of Japanese rom-com stories is the “teasing”. The two main characters won’t be united for the majority of the story, so the job of the storyteller is to tease, tease, and tease the audience. Because the moment the two main characters eventually confess their feelings, that is basically about 80% of the story already completed.

A couple of episodes after saying that, Masamune finally confesses his love to Aki. Declaring his intention to be her boyfriend in front of the speechless Gasou Kanetsugu. She reciprocates his feelings, and now the two main characters, Adagaki Aki and Makabe Masamune, have officially become a couple. So based on what Masamune said in the first episode, the story should be about 80% done now.

The Beginning of The Third Act

Masamune-kun Revenge R Ep 05 Yoshino Shoving Masamune

In fiction, the First Act is the “Set Up”. This is the part where the characters are introduced and the motive and objectives are presented. This part happened back in the early episodes of the first season of Masamune-kun’s Revenge.

The Second Act is the “Confrontation”. As the name suggests, this is the meat of the story where the protagonist has to face all kinds of setbacks and obstacles. This is usually the longest part of the story. In the case of Masamune-kun’s Revenge, the second act spans across the majority of the first season and the first four episodes of the second season. And now, with 80% of the story seemingly completed, we are officially entering the Third Act of Masamune-kun’s Revenge.

The Third Act represents the “Resolution” of a story. For Masamune-kun’s Revenge R, the confession and the union of the two main characters that happens in episode 5 mark the first step towards the resolution of this series.

One thing worth noting, however, when a story should enter the resolution phase or how long it should stay in this stage depends highly on the storyteller. Some only need an episode or two for the resolution, which is the case for most mystery anime like Baccano or Odd Taxi, while others require more than a season to showcase its resolution, such as Attack on Titan. But for all intent and purposes, when a story finally enters the third act, it means we’re right at the beginning of the end.

What Would Likely Happen Next?

Masamune-kun Revenge R Ep 05 Yoshino Masamune Aki

Continuing from the previous point, the showrunners of Masamune-kun’s Revenge R decided to begin the resolution in episode 5. Masamune-kun’s Revenge R would likely have about 12 episodes in total, just like its first season. That means there are still seven episodes left. That is quite a lot of episodes to go through. So the question now becomes what would likely happen after this episode?

Well, since Masamune finally revealed his real identity to Aki, and they are officially dating now, the main conflict of the series has been pretty much resolved. Some of the minor storylines have also been cleared up, such as Gasou Kanetsugu who turns out to be a woman, and Neko Fujinomiya accepting her defeats to Adagaki Aki. So there are only two main things that need to be addressed in the rest of this season.

The first one is regarding Yoshino Koiwai’s lies. Masamune, Aki, and Yoshino would likely talk it out and properly resolve this thorny issue in the upcoming episodes. The second one is much more lighthearted and also quite wholesome, which is about the dating life of a new couple. From what we can see in episode 5, Aki and Masamune still feel quite awkward around each other despite them officially being a couple now.

So the upcoming episodes will likely showcase their attempt to get closer to each other by spending time doing various couple-related activities, with funny and heartwarming moments sprinkled throughout. That being said, seven episodes translates to a lot of content, so let’s see what the showrunners have in store for the final stage of Masamune-kun’s Revenge R.
