Warning: The following contains spoilers for Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2, Episode 16, “Norn and Aisha”, now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
In episode four of Mushoku Tensei’s second part of season two, Ruijerd, Aisha, and Norn arrive at Rudeus’ house. Their arrival will undoubtedly set new dynamics at Rudeus’ house, as both his sisters have different things to offer. Moreover, with Ruijerd reappearing, many fans wondered if he’d be returning to the main story. However, it seems that will not be happening, as Ruijerd seemed to want to leave rather early.
Also, while fans are already aware that Norn and Rudeus don’t get along, the strain of their relationship may be greater than many first assumed. Norn seems to have little to no social skills, extremely dislikes her brother, and is below average compared to other students of her age in Mushoku Tensei.

Misunderstandings And Miscommunications
Rudeus’ Relationship With Eris Still Leaves A Sore Taste
Close
During Ruijerd’s brief stay at Rudeus’ house, he asked about Eris, a sore spot of Rudeus’, no doubt. Rudeus simply replied that she left him, as he thinks Eris simply doesn’t like him anymore. However, as fans know, the reason Eris left was because she didn’t see herself as an equal to Rudeus and thought that being with him was limiting his potential as a mage. However, Rudeus saw it differently and concluded that Eris simply didn’t like him anymore. From that point on, Rudeus went through a series of emotional traumas for three years until he met Sylphy. For the first time since Eris left, Rudeus considers that the reason she left might not be what he thinks. Although, after three years of suffering, Rudeus believes that there’s no point in thinking about it. The fact that he never truly understood the reason Eris left shows just how poor the duo are at communicating and how their ‘good intentions’ turned into misguided actions.
Looming Tensions: Ancient Rivalries Meet Again
Could Ruijerd And Badigadi Have Clashed In The Past?
Close
The next morning, after Ruijerd, Norn, and Aisha’s arrival, Rudeus sees Badigadi and Ruijerd having a stare-down. The tension between the duo is expected; however, the cause is not fully known. In the past, Badigadi was firmly against Laplace, as Hitogami had placed seeds of doubt and distrust in him; meanwhile, Ruijerd was the captain of Laplace’s elite guards, putting them at odds. It is unknown exactly how the ancient Laplace War played out. However, Ruijerd eventually turned against Laplace after realizing that his race had been deceived and manipulated.
Moreover, the one who split Laplace into the Technique God and Demon God was none other than Badigadi, meaning that at a certain point in time, his and Ruijerd’s goals should’ve been aligned. While he and Badigadi were locked in an intense staredown, Ruijerd admitted to Rudeus that he wouldn’t fight the Demon King. However, as with past opponents during a great war, there are sure to be tensions.
The Troubles Of Parenting
Rudeus Deals With Fairness And Favoritism
Close
The main message of the episode is the dynamic between Rudeus and his sisters. So far, Norn has never trusted Rudeus, and she seems to trust him even less after she sees Sylphy by his side. The main reason Norn dislikes Rudeus is because the first time they met, she met him hitting her father, Paul. While she may be young and a child, it’s interesting that she never considered why and simply pegged Rudeus as the bad guy, even though they share the same parents. Of course, this could be because she is strongly attached to her father, as he was the only family she had around after the Teleport Incident; however, after meeting the rest of her family, she’ll have to at least try to bond with them.
Despite Norn’s undesirable behavior, Rudeus goes all out to ensure that she and Aisha have the best they can get. However, the young mage quickly faces the troubles of parenting as the issue of fairness comes up. While he wanted his sisters to attend school, Aisha was uninterested, and Norn was scared. With both to their own, Rudeus states that he’ll decide their fates after seeing their results. Aisha does exceptionally well, while Norn does below average. However, Rudeus still accepts both of their demands, a situation Aisha deems unfair. Looking at things from Aisha’s point of view, the young child has a point. If she could have her way without trying, then why try? There would be no point to her actions in such a situation.
Although she has a point, Rudeus lets her understand that he’s simply doing what he believes is best for them both. However, how he’ll deal with such a tricky situation if it comes up again could impact many things in Mushoku Tensei. Simply accepting Norn’s demands would make it feel like he’s giving her preferential treatment because of their parentage, which would make Aisha feel chastised and generally unwelcome.

The Socially Anxious And The Confident

After accepting Norn’s demands to live in the dorms and away from Rudeus and Aisha, many would think that Norn’s mood would improve. However, it only seems to showcase the difference between the two sisters. As a character, Norn seems to be a shut-in similar to Rudeus in his past life. Not only does she have poor social skills, but she generally seems scared of interacting with others.
Unlike her siblings, Norn is no genius; however, that doesn’t mean she can’t achieve the things she sets out to do if only she tries. With Aisha being the more confident one of the duo, Norn seems to struggle with having her emotions and thoughts known. Since she has only ever lived with her father since the Teleport Incident, her current demeanor in the presence of her brother and half-sister, whom she can’t stand, is understandable. However, she’ll have to overcome it to make any real progress with her siblings.
