Isekai Anime have this bad tendency to make their main characters about as interesting or complex as a wooden board at times, but this isn’t for any lack of good character traits or even an excess of flaws. It’s simply because while they may have character traits, they don’t feel like people due to the fact that their flaws are hand waved away and usually never brought up as a main point of improvement on the characters part. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation manages to buck this trend for the most part, as its main character is flawed in the most obvious of ways for the most part. Living a less-than-ideal life in your first run-up to your thirties will do that to a character, but Rudeus still retains some elements of his flaws and trauma with him into the new world. Why exactly is this important for Rudeus as a character, and why it helps make him a refreshing Isekai protagonist.

Much of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation as a series revolves around world-building and character relations as Rudeus experiences major events in his world. However, Rudeus as a character is not your typical Isekai main protagonist, and it certainly doesn’t make him unlikeable or relatable compared to most other Isekai protagonists. The reasoning for this is that, despite his inherent character shining through at times, it is blocked by certain shadows of his flaws and personality, as well as the trauma of his past life, which dictate most of his decisions to become a better person. So often, a good deal of anime involving Isekai tend to forget that the new world is not just a fantasy playground, but a living breathing world and that the main character itself needs to adapt and grow along with it. Rudeus Greyrat does exactly just that, and thankfully he manages successfully to do so with a compelling sense of growth from starting at the bottom.

Rudeus’ Flaws

By now, many fans of the series are aware of Rudeus’s growth, but many also are intimately aware and familiar with his huge failings as a person that force him to grow and want to mature. At the beginning of the show, he was, to put it quite bluntly, a lecherous pervert in the body of a young kid. However, not just from that pervertedness, Rudeus had a tendency to give up on things that became hard, which he slowly grew out of as his success overcame his failures. Even so, at the beginning he was afraid of going out of his house because of a trauma that vastly stunted his emotional growth as a person up to his thirties in his previous life.

While most of these flaws are seen through the first few episodes, and even a little bit deeper into the story, these flaws aren’t meant to make us hate or dislike Rudeus’s character. In fact, the character itself is aware of his flaws, why he failed in his previous life, and why he wants to proceed to live a better life that he can be proud of. Rudeus already beats himself up a lot about his flaws, even if he can fall into bad habits that are mostly pervertedly comedic in nature, which in turn makes the audience more enthralled in seeing how a newly gifted young man becomes a better person by the time they grow through the years. Rudeus falls and yet gets back up again, and dedicates himself to seriously living as a person without ever giving up on it; this is the major theme of his character, and its precisely why his growth and 3rd-dimensional character resonates and compels much of the audience to keep watching Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation.

Importance of Flaws

Overall, despite these flaws being a stain on Rudeus’ character, it doesn’t use those as an excuse for Rudeus to not improve as a character. The fans may be forgiven for thinking that the flaws are mere supplements and simply something to be waved aside and forgotten, but the truth becomes that Rudeus’ flaws are what grounds him as a growing, changing, and contributing main character of the story. Even if he himself may have been extremely flawed, they serve as starting points for the story and Rudeus’ growth as a character. Without these character traits, Rudeus wouldn’t be as compelling as he is throughout the first season and even the beginning second season.

No doubt that flaws may seem unappealing, but more fans are hoping for characters like Rudeus Greyrat in future Isekai anime. Flawed, perhaps even a bit unlikeable at first, but always growing and slowly realizing where they need to learn and grow. These are the kinds of characters that will grow up to be fan favorites, remembered and fondly cared for as characters that surpassed their flaws and grew from them. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation does exactly just that perfectly, and it certainly is represented via Rudeus’ flaws.
