My Hero Academia’s U.A. Hero Academy features some of the strongest students harnessing quirks with the potential to one day turn them into a Pro Hero. Quirks are powers granted at birth and unlocked at an early age, giving those who possess the powers a choice to use them for good or evil. Not everyone is born with a quirk, as those who fail to unlock their own powers are referred to as quirkless. Such is the case for the main protagonist of the story, Izuku Midoriya, who failed to awaken a quirk until one was passed down to him by the former Number-1 Hero, All Might. Once a quirk is unlocked, those who possess special powers will be expected to strengthen their abilities and become powerful heroes.
The U.A. Hero Academy may be home to some of the most special children with high potential, but teachers who are assigned to give them lessons and put them through exams and expeditions also come with their own quirks. Among the likes of Shota Aizawa and Hizashi Yamada, who are among the more popular instructors, is Ectoplasm. A menacing figure in appearance, Ectoplasm serves as the school’s mathematician, but is also a fierce combatant. He expects the most of all his students, pushing them beyond their limits and expecting them to shine through the pressure he places them under. His brains and muscles are a perfect match, and his quirk make Ectoplasm a fantastic hero.

Ectoplasm’s Quirk: Clones
First Appearance | My Hero Academia, Episode 4, “Start Line” |
Debut Date | June 2, 2018 |
Ectoplasm was first introduced at the U.A. Hero Academy as one of Class 1-A’s professors, handling the math class of the school. Upon first glance, one would think Ectoplasm was a villain for his intimidating presence and sinister grin, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Though he is highly intelligent and focuses on keeping his students dedicated to their studies, Ectoplasm is always the first to jump to the front line of battle and flex his abilities. Ectoplasm relies on his Clone quirk, which allows him to make several copies of himself and launch an attack. This quirk comes especially handy if the school is attacked by a large enough group of villains to over-power the students with numbers, as Ectoplasm can simply multiply himself to even the odds.
In order to effectively create clones, Ectoplasm produces multiple streams of ectoplasm from his mouth and transforms them into clones of himself. He is able to create up to 30 clones at a time, though he has admitted to being able to push that limit to 36 if it’s a good day. Each clone acts as a hive mind, connected to Ectoplasm’s main body, and can attack or defend on command. Ectoplasm’s clones can be defeated with one strong blow or by being re-called by Ectoplasm himself, but they all possess the same strength and skills as the host body. Ectoplasm is also capable of creating one large clone, capable of destroying large structures or competing with some of the strongest villains in My Hero Academia, and it possesses a larger amount of power compared to the regular clones.
Ectoplasm’s Fighting Style With Clones
Though Ectoplasm’s Clone quirk doesn’t amplify strength or come with some of the flashy gimmicks that other quirks possess, it has its own powerful qualities. Ectoplasm is more than capable of handling himself in close-ranged combat, as he is excellent with melee attacks and is proficient with both punches and kicks. Furthermore, creating clones of himself can overwhelm any villain, as they’ll be dealing with multiple bodies at once, all of which share the same combat skills. What makes his clones special, unlike other anime series that feature cloning, is that his clones can create their own, provided the limit of 30 hasn’t been reached. This means that copies of Ectoplasm don’t have to come from the main host, and can multiply at any time.
In tougher battles, Ectoplasm relies on his ultimate move, Giant Bite Detention, which creates an exceptionally large clone. This clone is capable of detaining anything it swallows, and is much stronger and faster than the regular clones Ectoplasm produces. Ectoplasm’s great combination of power and speed allows him to produce as many clones as possible in a short time, and then proceed to exert all of his energy to get the upper hand on villains. Ectoplasm is also a formidable fighter and never hesitates to jump into the action and showcase his abilities, and more often than not, he comes up on the winning side.

Clones’ Usage In Battle
While Ectoplasm isn’t villainous in any shape or form, even if his appearance says otherwise, he can still be quite a monster in battle. During the First Term Final Exam’s practical portion, Ectoplasm clashed with Fumikage Tokoyami and Tsuyu Asui in a two-one-one battle and forced them both to go beyond their limits. Not only was he able to keep them at a distance with no effort, Ectoplasm used only his legs to fend off attacks. Ectoplasm was able to use his high sense of alert to understand each of the student’s quirks, denoting the weaknesses as he sparred with them, and came up with a resolution to detain them both. Though he came up short due to a clever plan from Tokoyami and Tsuyu, he was more than pleased to commend them for their efforts, as he only wished for them to succeed and surpass their limits.
During the USJ Incident, many of the students of the U.A. Hero Academy were subjected to an attack by a large crowd of villains, led by the League of Villains and Tomura Shigaraki. Ectoplasm wasn’t a part of the initial battle, due to the sneak attack taking the school off guard, but he managed to make it just in time to make the save alongside many other Pro Heroes. Jumping into the fray quickly, Ectoplasm quickly made several clones, enough to have each one taken on multiple enemies at a time and change the momentum. Ectoplasm and the remainder of the Pro Heroes made quick work of the League of Villains, forcing them to retreat, and Ectoplasm was immediate with his plan to strengthen the school’s defenses and teach better reaction strategies to any future attacks.
The Downside of Clones
In his fighting skills and intelligence, there are no real weaknesses in Ectoplasm’s overall abilities, though his Clone quirk comes with one caveat. Should a clone take substantial damage, even with one blow, the clone will evaporate. When facing villains with long reach and tremendous power, Ectoplasm can see all 30 of his clones vanquished in a matter of seconds. Fortunately, there doesn’t appear to be a limit to how many he can create, as long as there are no more than 30 on the field at a time. During his field studies with Tokoyami and Tsuyu, many of his clones were taken down, only to have replacements re-appear in a matter of seconds.
Ectoplasm and his clones don’t have any particular magical powers, instead relying on hand-to-hand combat, intelligence, and a heightened sense of evasion. It’s tough to land a shot on Ectoplasm’s main body, and that becomes tremendously more difficult when villains are dealing with multiple clones at once. Ectoplasm’s quirk works well as support and as a way of overwhelming opponents, making him one of the more versatile Pro Heroes in My Hero Academia. Factoring in that his Giant Bite Detention can also subdue anyone it touches, and Ectoplasm quickly becomes a hero that allies will want to have at the front of the line when they head into a war.
