Todoroki Enji, more popularly known as the Flame Hero: Endeavor, is one of the main characters in the My Hero Academia series. First appearing as the number two hero, Endeavor was admired and looked upon by many.
Despite the admiration they felt towards the then number two hero, Endeavor had scary traits — his obsession with overcoming All Might and the crazed look in his eye. To top it off, although he was admired by many, the admiration came from afar as most civilians were too scared to get close to him. However, despite his not-so-great past, Endeavor has become a better father and hero in recent arcs.
From Enji To Endeavor
Enji’s desire to be a hero was lighted after an unfortunate event that involved his father. One day, his father tried to save a little girl from the hands of a villain but ended up becoming a casualty alongside her. When Endeavor witnessed this, he decided to become a pro hero and enrolled in U.A. High School. After joining U.A., Enji chose the hero name Endeavor and quickly rose to become the number two hero on the Hero Billboard Chart JP at the tender age of 20. At the number two position, the only one stopping his dream of becoming number one was All Might.
Endeavor’s Obsession
As Endeavor became more and more powerful, he realized that the gap between him and All Might was so large it was insurmountable. To become better than All Might, he became more and more obsessed with single-handedly chasing after his goal. Realizing he could not beat All Might, Endeavor decided to change his strategy by having a child that would fulfill his dream in his place. To this extent, he married Rei Himura to get his hands on her ice quirk. The marriage would enable his child to inherit his and Rei’s quirk achieving a perfect balance.
While in a quirk marriage, Endeavor developed genuine feelings for Rei, and their marriage was happy and peaceful. Their first child, Toya, was born. Although he only inherited Endeavor’s quirk, his was much more powerful and so Endeavor sought to train the child to become a hero. Unfortunately, Toya gained Rei’s constitution and resistance to cold rather than Endeavor’s resistance to heat. This unfortunate development made his body a poor match for his quirk and often got him burned.
Deeming Toya as a failure, Endeavor’s obsession with getting the perfect child increased, and he discarded Toya. After lighting the fire in Toya to become number one, Endeavor tells him to give up on becoming a hero. Subsequently, after Toya, he had several other children until Shoto, who inherited both his and Rei’s quirk, was finally born. However, at that time, Endeavor caused a split in his family, making his children hate him. Moreover, his actions caused the rise of Dabi, as Toya (now Dabi) sought to take everything from him.
Endeavor’s Reform Arc
During the end of the Hideout Raid Arc, All Might is forced to retire after facing All For One in an intense battle. As he became effectively retired, Endeavor became the number one hero. Feeling insulted, Endeavor disliked the way he became number one and had many furious outbursts.
After becoming number one, Endeavor began to have a change of heart. He realized that being number one did not mean much if his family was not together. And so, he started striving to become a better hero and father. As Endeavor strived and continues to in the hope of becoming better as a person; he encountered many obstacles that showed him just how much damage he had caused to his family. One of the more hard-to-bear obstacles he encounters is Dabi. Dabi, the then member of the League of Villains, was revealed to be Toya, and he, came for vengeance. Dabi had always been planning to make Endeavor lose everything and spared nothing to that expense. He even broadcast a live video, telling the world how he was abused by his father as a child. While the hero society was already in chaos with the League of Villains’ involvement, Dabi’s truth set the world into further chaos.
Endeavor’s Current Status
As a hero, Endeavor has come a long way. While he was crazed and obsessed with becoming number one in the beginning, he is much calmer and cares much more for his family now. Currently, Endeavor is still trying to face his past as he battles Dabi in the Final War Arc. Although Endeavor’s future with his family is unknown, the hero has turned a better leaf and has decided to face the consequences of his actions head-on, no matter what they may be. And to this extent, the Flame Hero Endeavor has the support of many, as he reforms and pays for his mistakes.
