Tsuyu, known by her hero name, Froppy, is a strategic hero with powers similar to a frog, taking the stance of the amphibian and using an elongated tongue as a weapon and support to help others in need.
Tsuyu is one of many examples of characters that mangaka Kōhei Horikoshi introduces early into My Hero Academia, highlighting her youthfulness that comes with naivety and innocence. What Was Froppy Like In Season One?
There are few characters quite like Tsuyu, not just in My Hero Academia, but in any anime series. Her aloof nature and freedom of expression are often confused with confidence, as Tsuyu is usually nervous and doubts herself, though she keeps it bottled up. The hero known as Froppy, Tsuyu excels at the academic level and comes with a higher level of maturity, thanks to her upbringing. As the older sister of the family with two working parents, Tsuyu often cared for her siblings, gaining the maturity and leadership qualities to nurture others and guide them in the right direction. She also has high morals and principles and isn’t afraid to challenge others about their beliefs.
While she is given the title of a “perfect pillar of emotional support” by Recovery Girl, the U.A.’s nurse, Tsuyu does have her limits. She has broken down occasionally, primarily due to her speaking her mind and going with the logical outcome instead of the emotional one. During the Bakugo recovery plan, Tsuyu shared her uncertainties about the plan and, as a result, frowned at her choice of words. When Class 1-A began their group battle activities, Tsuyu was often placed in charge of constructing a plan that could effectively draw closer to the opposing group while going unnoticed. Tsuyu’s biggest strength is her battle intellect and agility, which give her the task of seeking out the enemy and creating a plan of action to initiate combat without putting her team at risk.
Froppy has always been book smart, and her character development involves the battle portion catching up. Her ability to dictate the flow of the fight and come up with alternatives on the fly has led her to finish in the top 10 of the US Popularity Poll in three consecutive years, topping out at the number-two position. As one of the most intelligent characters in My Hero Academia, Froppy’s major growth spurt was her confidence level rising as she mastered her quirk and used it in many ways, offensively and defensively. Tsuyu’s leadership qualities continue to blossom throughout My Hero Academia, and despite her taking more of a back seat during the Shie Hassaikai arc, she still had a say in the right approach. Her calm and level-headedness are always a welcoming nature to the group, who often think emotionally, which leads to rash decision-making. With Tsuyu at their side during a battle, the team can work as a collective unit, allowing Froppy to shine with her ability to scout the area and ensure they’re not falling into a trap. This trait also allows the rest of the team to focus on their strengths when entering a fight, placing the strategic planning task on Tsuyu’s shoulders.
One area of Tsuyu’s growth also affects the surrounding heroes — her softening of morality and right versus wrong. During the Final War arc, Froppy confronts Himiko Toga and realizes her initial belief system is flawed. She held onto the concept of heroes doing good and villains doing evil, and there is no gray area, but her face-off with Toga led to a change in her thought process. This change of heart also led to Ochaco Uraraka rethinking her morality and gaining a thorough understanding of where Froppy was coming from. Froppy is brilliant on the battlefield, and her calm-minded thinking can lead to the planning of the best possible outcome. Her quirk also cooperates well with the quirks of other, stronger heroes in My Hero Academia, allowing her to serve support whenever required. Froppy is also a master at recovery and evasion, allowing her to swoop in and save someone in need, whether a civilian or a fellow hero.
On the downside, it severely limits her effectiveness during the heat of a battle. Tsuyu is also weakened by colder weather, making her more ineffective in winter. Her battle intellect is still practical, so her best option is to remain on the sidelines and consider a plan. She also works well in a team with Ochaco, using her ultimate move, Meteor Fafrotskies, to combine with her partner’s Float quirk to launch projectiles at enemies. Froppy can also camouflage herself and use Froppy Hopper, making her exit strategy fluid and her best option when the battle becomes too sticky. At Froppy’s peak, she’ll be an excellent support hero who can lead rescue missions and keep her fellow heroes safe.
