My Hero Academia is currently in its Final War Saga and the story is closer than ever before to wrapping up. As this series reaches its climax, the many character arcs seen in the story are getting wrapped up one by one. Fans have seen several of them already being dealt with by Horikoshi, reaching great conclusions, and Toga was the latest one to join the list. Toga was one of the most important members of the League of Villains and now, the Paranormal Liberation Front as well.
As one of the closest confidants of Shigaraki, Toga was especially useful to the group, thanks to her Transform ability. Toga’s connection to Jin Bubaigawara was incredibly special and was explored in great detail in the story and when he died, Toga’s character took a very interesting turn, and led her to where she is in the Final War Saga currently.
Toga’s Power
Toga possesses a very powerful Quirk called Transform that has shaped her entire life ever since her childhood. Born an innocent child with tremendous love for all things cute, Toga was hit with the harsh reality that society saw her as a deviant very soon. Whenever Toga loved someone, she craved a taste of their blood and eventually, she gained the power to Transform into them. Sadly for her, this ability made everyone hate her and she was labeled as a deviant full of hate, and a girl with an ugly smile. Naturally, she grew up with hatred and envy in her heart and eventually sought out the League of Villains.
At the League, she found a home to belong to because she wasn’t the only misfit there. Nobody was cruel to her and her powers were appreciated instead of being demonized. Of course, the organization was the League of Villains and it was inevitable that Toga would end up going down the wrong path. She ended up becoming a heinous criminal and even killed, as long as she was happy. With each crime that she committed with the League of Villains, she grew stronger, and eventually, she gained the power to use the Quirks of other people as well, manifesting the full potential of the Transform quirk.
Toga never received a helping hand in her life and that pushed her down the wrong path. Little did she know that in the future, the person who would save her would end up being a Hero and this aspect of irony in her life was thoroughly explored in the Final War Saga of My Hero Academia.
Toga In The Final War
In the Final War Saga of My Hero Academia, Toga has played a great role in the Paranormal Liberation Front. In the vast majority of the arc, Toga has been chased by Uraraka as the latter wanted to understand her feelings and talk to her about feelings of romance. Toga and Uraraka certainly did have previous encounters where the former was not as receptive, however, at that point, she had not yet realized how Toga felt. With time, Uraraka realized that she wanted to help Toga, just as Deku wants to help Shigaraki and that is precisely why she decided to hold a face-to-face conversation with Toga and talk about love.
Getting to Toga was incredibly arduous for Uraraka, thanks to her incredible powers and the fact that her Transform work was in overdrive. Toga used the powers of her Quirk to a great degree and shifted the tides of the battle in favor of the Paranormal Liberation Front in the blink of an eye. She was able to transform into Twice and then, use Twice’s Double Quirk to clone herself and then transform into different people, complicating the battle far too much. Eventually, her Quirk power reached a point where the entirety of the battlefield got swarmed with Twice’s clones and the Heroes had no way of winning. Had Toga continued this, the heroes would have faced certain defeat. What’s more, if she had managed to transform into Shigaraki, the battle would have been over in an instant, which just goes to show her fearsome potential and the incredible power of her Quirk, being able to decide the entirety of the war all by herself.
Toga And Uraraka’s Love
Toga’s story was deeply intertwined with Uraraka and Deku. At some point, Toga also liked Deku and this is because the guy who she had her first crush on at one point in her life looked quite like him. However, Toga could not ask him for his blood as he would have ended up thinking that she was a deviant as well. At some point, Toga also fell in love with Uraraka simply because she was cute. She went on to reveal in the latest chapters that she loves a lot of things for simple reasons. She loves animals because they’re cute, she loves humans because they have pretty smiles and for that reason, she also fell in love with Ochaco at some point. It is also why she craved the blood of these people and she ended up being called a deviant for that.
However, much to her surprise, Uraraka accepted her feelings wholeheartedly and told her that she could have as much blood as she wanted from her and that she should smile more often. She made Toga feel like a normal person and told her that her smile was the most beautiful in the entire world, which moved the villain to tears. Uraraka also reciprocated her feelings and implied that she loved her as well. At the end of the day, Toga was saved by a Hero, despite being a villain.
It must be noted that Uraraka also mentioned to Toga that she cannot simply turn a blind eye to what evil acts she had committed and that she would have to pay for those, however, she can rest assured that she can have her blood for the rest of her life, whenever she wants, and that is, simply put, beautiful and just goes to show how great a hero Uraraka has become over the years.
Toga’s Death
Needless to say, Toga was utterly moved by the heroic act of Ochaco and as soon as the two shared their feelings with each other, Toga realized that this was one person she simply could not afford to let die. In the midst of the battle, Toga stabbed Uraraka and gave her a very dangerous wound which had been bleeding out continuously ever since. At the end of the fight, Uraraka’s body was cold and she was losing quite a lot of blood. Undoubtedly, she would have died in a matter of seconds, however, Toga took it upon herself to drink her blood and transform into her. She then decided to give her own blood to Uraraka, since when she transforms into someone, she also gains their blood type as well as their power when she loves them.
Toga performed a blood transfusion and doing so would ensure that she was the one who ended up dying instead of Uraraka. All her life, she craved the blood of other people but for the very first time, she felt so loved that she decided to give her own blood to someone. That is an incredibly beautiful touch by Horikoshi and brilliant characterization for both Toga as well as Uraraka.
While this was a beautiful touch, it also raises some concerns as it ends up becoming an easy way for Toga to escape the consequences of her decisions. Toga is a character that could have had a tremendously beautiful redemption arc, and at the same time, her relationship with Uraraka could have been explored even more. The two had romantic feelings for each other which Horikoshi could have shed further light upon.
A blood transfusion does not necessarily have to mean death, however, this is the path that Horikoshi has chosen and it is here that the curtain falls on Toga’s character. Regardless of what ends up happening to her, Toga was an absolutely beautiful character with the most beautiful smile in My Hero Academia and fans will surely remember her for years to come.
