Despite only lasting six chapters, the sacrifice of Star and Stripe — known as the American Hero and the World’s Strongest Woman — has long-lasting effects on Shigaraki and All For One’s plans to thwart the heroes of the world. Following All Might, Izuku Midoriya, and the remaining Pro Heroes and Class 1-A, the U.A. Traitor Arc places the focus on the side for good, making their plans of advancement on the remaining villains.

Living up to its name, the U.A. Traitor Arc turns My Hero Academia on its head, shocking the audience with some major twists that come with devastating implications. Despite having the momentum on their side, Midoriya and Class 1-A are faced with the horror of one of their own revealing their hand by telling the truth of their backstory and how they reached this place in their life. In just eight chapters, mangaka Kōhei Horikoshi manages to tug at the heartstrings of readers and bring a sympathetic yet dangerous story to the forefront, forcing Midoriya and the rest of the class to switch their focus away from All For One in order to deal with the new threat.

Preparation For War Against Shigaraki

Close

Kicking off with a meeting held by All Might, the announcement of Star and Stripe’s demise is given to the remaining Pro Heroes and students of Class 1-A. The American Hero, known as the World’s Strongest Woman, served a purpose in her fight with Shigaraki, sacrificing her mortality for the betterment of good, but also using her quirk to her advantage. Star and Stripe’s quirk, New Order, allowed her to apply a specific rule to anything she touches, as long as she knows the name of the thing or person she comes into contact with. This comes into play when she and Shigaraki make contact, which activates New Order before she suffers from Shigaraki’s decay quirk. The rule she uses? Destroy Shigaraki’s stored quirks with poison.

With the knowledge of Shigaraki’s weakened state and loss of several quirks, All Might suggests their next plan of attack and some planned training to prepare for the fight. Katsuki Bakugo states that the plans have already been underway for quite some time, as he and Class 1-A have been training with the Wild, Wild Pussycats and sparring with Midoriya. While further strengthening their quirks, the sessions with Midoriya have also aided him with his continuous quest to master One For All and become the ultimate weapon against Shigaraki and All For One. Surrounding the tense atmosphere and urgency for preparations, All Might can’t help but lament about how much the young ones have grown.

The task at hand is no easy feat, as Midoriya and all Pro Heroes and allies are up against their greatest threat to date. Led by Shigaraki and All For One, who are nearing a stage of complete merging of body and mind, they have an army behind them that will prove to be dangerous. Dabi, Himiko Toga, and the Paranormal Liberation Front are not too far behind, and the six Near High-End Nomu are with them. Factor in the remaining escaped convicts who all have quirks of their own, the hero side will have their hands full and numbers will not be in their favor. Unfortunately, that situation is about to become much worse.

The U.A. Traitor Is Revealed

Close

During the training of the students of Class 1-A, the heroes debate about pre-emptively striking the villain side and leading the charge, which is swiftly shot down by Bakugo. The fiery hero reminds the team that, despite their best efforts, All For One has never been found when searching for him. Keeping in mind that they’ve only encountered All For One on his time, and that their numbers are dwindling compared to the last war, their efforts are best served by training and waiting for the villains to show up before launching a counterattack. As this discussion continues, Toru Hagakure is hot on the trail of who she believes to be the U.A. traitor.

Sadly, the traitor is revealed to be Yuga Aoyama, the sparkling hero with the heart of gold. Toru is able to determine the culprit from some suspicion of Yuga’s lack of positive attitude and never seeing him smile or make eye contact with the other heroes. As she overhears Yuga’s parents discussing what their next course of action is, revealing that Yuga has been working alongside All For One and taking orders from him to sabotage the heroes. Throughout the conversation, Yuga painstakingly goes along with the new plans as if he has no choice, as his parents indicate that they owe All For One for everything he has done.

My Hero Academia: How are Nomus Created?

Nomus are some of the League of Villains’ most useful assets. How did these monstrous artificial humans come to be?

In one of the biggest revelations of the U.A. Traitor Arc, not only is Yuga the culprit but his quirk was also assigned to him by All For One. Yuga was born quirkless and in a fit of desperation to help their son feel accomplished, Yuga’s parents turned to All For One for help. My Hero Academia‘s biggest threat assigned the Navel Laser quirk to Yuga, but due to his inability to control the quirk himself, he was also given a belt to keep the power locked and fire on command. In a heart-breaking moment, Yuga reveals to Midoriya that he was responsible for aiding the League of Villains during the U.S.J. Incident. Everything leading up to this moment, from his admission into the U.A. Hero Academy to his role with the heroes, was all part of a design concocted by All For One.

Upon his capture, My Hero Academia undergoes several gut-wrenching panels highlighting the desperation in Yuga’s words and the effects his actions have on those he once considered friends. Though he and his family remain under investigation, with an underlying fear that he may also have a bomb planted inside of him to the same effect as Lady Nagant, those close to Yuga highlight their belief in him as a good person. Midoriya cries out to Yuga that he can still become the hero he wishes to be, while Shota Aizawa confesses that he has no intention of expelling the disgraced hero from the U.A. Hero Academy.

Outside the interrogation room, Class 1-A prepares for the battle ahead by working on their training and gearing up with new gadgets, provided by the ever-resourceful Mei Hatsume. With her new equipment given out to Midoriya and Tenya, she continues to work hard towards strengthening the defense barriers ahead of the big war. Ryukyu and other Pro Heroes are on evacuation duties, getting all citizens out of harm’s way and clearing the city to reduce the number of casualties. All Might and Hawks take it upon themselves to come up with the strongest available team to take down the Paranormal Liberation Front, while the students of Class 1-A mentally prepare for what awaits them.

Amidst all the danger that lies ahead, My Hero Academia fans are subject to two beautiful moments of dialogue — one between Ochaco and Midoriya, and the other consisting of a heart-to-heart with Aizawa and Yuga. Though Yuga can’t change what he’s done nor re-gain the trust he’s lost from his friends, Aizawa reminds him that the burden he walks with is not his alone to carry. Although he has betrayed the heroes of the U.A. Hero Academy, Yuga is still relied upon to make things right and join the side of good in the final war.

Dabi And Himiko Share Somber Moment

Dabi and Toga being recruited

Not every chapter contains moments between villains depicting a more human side, especially with the Final War Arc looming and the severity of their crimes on display. Still, Dabi and Himiko find it upon themselves to deliver one of those moments, painting the losses they’ve suffered as painful memories that live with them. In a world of good and evil, what makes the villains so evil isn’t always a matter of doing wrong for the sake of being the bad guy. In the case of Himiko, she was dealt a losing hand from the moment she was conceived, painted as a demon for her uncontrollable nature and unsettling appearance.

Upon her return to where she grew up, she remembers moments where she was left alone and made to feel like less than nothing. Dabi makes an excellent point that her powers allow her to transform into anyone she holds dear, giving her the ability to reminisce about more positive times. A vial containing Twice’s blood is shown, indicating she holds the memories and the powers of a beloved friend she lost. Though Twice’s demise was one that My Hero Academia fans were not prepared to go through, his memory lives on in Himiko’s thoughts, and in one of the many capsules she carries with her.
