Sage Mode is a special state in the world of Naruto that allows a user to absorb chakra from nature, known as Senjutsu chakra, and make it their own strength. By entering this heightened state, all the physical attributes of the user are boosted by quite a margin, putting them in a league of their own.
Although strong, Sage Mode can’t be kept active for indefinite periods of time, meaning there are certainly are limitations to this power, aside from it being incredibly hard to learn in the first place. In fact, very few characters in Naruto have managed to perfect this power.

This form of chakra is quite special and is only born when one mixes the natural energy present around them with their own chakra, giving rise to this incredible source of power. Essentially, anyone with the power to utilize senjutsu can be classified as a Sage. Sage Mode is an empowered state but at the same time, it’s no different from utilizing the powers of Senjutsu that many other characters in the world of Naruto also possess. While this list already goes over the powerful Sage Mode users, there are many Senjutsu users that have not been added to the mix. With that, this list has been updated.
17 Shima
Shima is a toad who lives with Fukasaku on Mount Myoboku. She is very well-versed in the ways of Senjutsu. In fact, she played a major role in helping Naruto utilize this power. While Fukasaku was the one who mostly did the training, Shima was just as capable. Furthermore, in conjunction with Jiraiya, Shima made use of sage chakra quite often. Sadly, due to being a frog, she was not all that powerful.
In fact, neither she nor Fukasaku were able to pose any sort of significant challenge to Pain. That said, her understanding of this power is absolutely immense and she can also pass on this skill to someone else. That in itself makes her one of the best users of sage mode, or senjutsu, in her case. Fans can only hope that she reappears and ends up playing some sort of role in the future of the story.
16 Fukasaku
Fukasaku is a toad from Mount Myoboku. Unlike those who trained there, Fukasaku has a great understanding of natural energy and can make use of it well. When using this power, he could even take on the likes of Naruto Uzumaki himself in Taijutsu combat, which is nothing short of impressive.
Fukasaku can even use several nature transformations empowered by sage chakra, and during his clash with Pain, he fared quite well. While not as strong as the likes of Naruto and Jiraiya, Fukasaku is still quite impressive.
15 White Snake Sage
The White Snake Sage belongs to the Ryuchi Cave, which is one of the three Great Sage Areas in the Naruto world. As the eldest and most respected snake there, it goes without saying that he has the power of senjutsu as well.
The White Snake Sage also injects his Senjutsu chakra into others. Those who survive end up getting access to the power of Sage Mode; however, the number of survivors is rather low. Although the White Snake Sage hasn’t been seen in action, he’s likely very strong.
14 Gamamaru
Gamamaru is an important character in the world of Naruto. He is the Great Toad Sage that fans see quite often in the series. This Toad Sage was the one who prophesized the coming of the Child of Prophecy. He set Jiraiya on the path to look for the Child of Prophecy, and essentially kickstarted a big part of the story. Quite clearly, it was through him that Jiraiya knew that one of his students would either bring about great peace or great destruction.
As a sage, it is no surprise that he can utilize Senjutsu chakra. Furthermore, Gamamaru was also seen in the anime to be a user of his powerful type of chakra. In fact, it was he who trained Hagoromo in the ways of Senjutsu and showed him what an incredible power natural energy is. His understanding of this ability might be the greatest in the entire series. Sadly, fans never got a chance to see it properly.
13 Jugo
Jugo was once a test subject of Orochimaru and he belongs to a special clan who have an incredible Kekkei Genkai. Their power allows all the members to passively absorb natural energy, granting them an enhanced state similar to Sage Mode.
The only downside of this is most members of the clan are hardly able to control their power and end up going berserk. Regardless, Jugo’s strength increases manifold when he accesses this state. It is due to this ability of his that Orochimaru took a keen interest in him.
12 Mitsuki
Mitsuki is a synthetic human created by Orochimaru, who is also his parent. Born to be the perfect human with powers that can potentially go beyond those of Orochimaru himself, Mitsuki is quite impressive. At a very young age, he managed to tap into the power of Senjutsu with his Sage Transformation.
Mitsuki has access to Jugo’s Kekkei Genkai, which allows him to absorb natural energy passively. This is, thus, his way of entering Sage Mode. Although he rarely uses it in battle, he becomes incredibly strong when he makes use of it.
11 Jiraiya
Jiraiya was one of the very few people in the world of Naruto to have access to Sage Mode and the first to show its powers to the fans. By training throughout his life, Jiraiya had gained a decent hold over this power. Under the guidance of Fukasaku, he increased his strength by quite a lot, although Jiraiya’s Sage Mode wasn’t perfect.
For some reason, Jiraiya had trouble mixing natural chakra with his own, giving him a few frog-like imperfections. Nonetheless, these imperfections also helped him in battle as he could use the frog-like features to his advantage. In terms of strength, Jiraiya was strong enough to take down three of the six bodies of Pain.
10 Kabuto Yakushi
After Orochimaru’s death, Kabuto Yakushi sought his power and eventually found his way to the Ryuchi Cave. Thanks to the Great White Snake, Kabuto was injected with Senjutsu chakra which he made his own strength later on.
With the power of Sage Mode, added with the several Kekkei Genkai that he had stolen from Orochimaru’s subjects, Kabuto became very powerful. He was strong enough to put up a fight against the likes of Sasuke and Itachi Uchiha, which just goes to show that he was quite menacing.
9 Minato Namikaze
Minato Namikaze was the Fourth Hokage of Konohagakure and an incredibly talented shinobi. Although Minato was plenty powerful on his own, he also learned Sage Mode at some point from Mount Myoboku.
His usage of it was seen during the Fourth Great Ninja War when he attacked Madara Uchiha in battle. Unlike Jiraiya, Minato’s usage of Sage Mode was perfect, evident from the orange pigment around his eyes. Sadly, since Minato wanted to always end fights as fast as possible, he never really relied on this power.
8 Hashirama Senju
Hashirama Senju was the First Hokage of Konohagakure and the strongest shinobi of his generation. Being a user of Wood Release, Hashirama was nigh unstoppable in combat and the only shinobi strong enough to put up a fight against him was Madara Uchiha.
Hashirama was also a user of Sage Mode in Naruto canon and he only needed a few seconds to enter this state, signifying great mastery over this power. When used against Madara Uchiha, Hashirama was strong enough to subdue both him and the Nine-Tails in combat, showing how dangerous this power actually made him.
7 Kashin Koji
Another artificial human, Kashin Koji is a clone of Jiraiya who was created by Amado, the genius scientist of Kara. Koji is a copy of Jiraiya, meaning everything that Jiraiya could do can be performed by Koji as well.
In fact, Koji is much stronger than Jiraiya and can even access perfect Sage Mode, unlike his genetic template. He displayed this ability in the fight against Isshiki Otsutsuki, and did surprisingly well against him.
6 Asura Otsutsuki
Asura Otsutsuki was born with no talent but he possessed the incredible physical attributes of his father. The very best attribute that Asura had was his kind heart and the fact that he wanted to help everyone. It was no surprise that he ended up making several friends and eventually, he became the successor of the Sage.
Asura received Six Paths Senjutsu directly from Hagoromo and inherited tremendous power. The fact that he could utilize Six Paths Senjutsu automatically classifies him as a Sage. While he did not enter the regular Sage Mode state like Naruto, he could use a very enhanced state of the same technique which is much more dangerous. Naruto Uzumaki himself can also use this enhanced state.
5 Obito Uchiha
Obito Uchiha is one of the strongest characters in the entire Naruto series. He is also one of the very few Uchiha with the power to utilize natural energy. While Obito cannot utilize the state of Sage Mode like Naruto, he has access to Senjutsu Chakra by virtue of being the Jinchuriki of the Ten Tails.
Obito sealed this Tailed Beast inside him during the 4th Great Ninja War. While he struggled to gain control over its powers at first, in time, he managed just fine. Obito gained incredible control over Sage chakra and showcased its usage when he fought against the entirety of the Shinobi Alliance by himself. It goes without saying that he was an incredible fighter and one that shocked the fans with his tremendous display.
4 Hamura Otsutsuki
Hamura Otsutsuki was the younger brother of the Sage of Six Paths. Just like him, he was born with tremendous powers from the get-go. As he grew up, his mastery over these powers grew as well. Hamura was blessed with the powers of Six Paths Senjutsu as well.
He could also manifest Truth Seeking Balls, which just goes to show that he was no pushover. While not a Sage Mode user in technical terms, he was still able to access the same energy, thanks to his Senjutsu. There is no apparent difference between utilizing Sage Mode or making use of Senjutsu chakra, which automatically qualifies him as a user of this technique as well.
3 Madara Uchiha
Just like Hashirama Senju, Madara Uchiha was an extremely powerful shinobi from the Warring States Era. Together with Hashirama, he gave rise to Konohagakure but eventually left the village.
Madara was one of the main antagonists of the Fourth Great Ninja War, and he showcased a whole new level of skill there. 2 Naruto Uzumaki
Naruto Uzumaki learned the usage of Sage Mode under Fukasaku after the death of Jiraiya, his mentor. In a short time, he was able to learn the perfect usage of this power. His first demonstration of the Sage Mode came during the fight against Pain, where he emerged victorious.
Later on, Naruto also learned to combine Sage Mode with Kurama Charka Mode, making him even stronger. What’s more, Naruto also received half of the Sage of Six Paths’ powers, granting him access to Six Paths Sage Mode as well.
1 Hagoromo Otsutsuki
Also known as the Sage of Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki was one of the strongest characters in the Naruto world. Being Kaguya’s son, he had very powerful chakra and had also gained access to the Rinnegan.
In the Naruto Shippuden anime, at some point, Hagoromo learned how to use Sage Mode under Gamamaru. Although the manga doesn’t show him as a user of this power, he still has access to the Six Paths Senjutsu, meaning he can utilize an enhanced form of this power. Hagoromo was strong enough to face Kaguya Otsutsuki in battle for months, implying he was quite a great user of this power.
